I had to put my best buddy down today. I am so so sad.

It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do but I keep telling myself he is at peace now. He had another really bad time last night and it was selfish of me to keep him around to satisfy my needs.

Please, anyone that has been through this, tell me I will not feel like this forever. I am so upset, I feel this gigantic hole in my chest and the emotion just overwhelms me to the point that I feel I may not recover.

Rest in peace my sweet little boy. Please know how much mommy loves you and how wonderful you made my life. I miss you.

I know it's tough right now but someday soon when you think of Sonic you will smile as you remember the sheer joy you brought each other and how you are so blessed that Sonic loves you and trusted you to take care of him and in return he without hesitation shared his great animal heart and spirit with you.

4. My best friend, Mac,

my little Scotty, died yesterday. I know how you feel. It is devastating but you will recover. You did the right thing.

I work at home, and for the last ten years Mac's always been right here with me, sleeping quietly in my office while I worked, then happy and running about when I was done for the day. He helped me do everything from cooking to painting the house to gardening. I miss him terribly.

But if the pain we feel for weeks or months after our pets die is the price we pay for the years of joy they give us, then that price is cheap, and I will gladly pay it.

6. it will get better eventually....

I had to put one dog down years ago; I'd had him half my life! It was awful, I cried and cried. But he was suffering, and it would have been a slow death.

Ten years ago my other dog ate a whole bottle of No-Doz while I was gone. I came home and she was dead of a stroke or heart attack. I really felt bad over that, and can still make myself cry if I think about her.

Both times I lost my companions, it was awful for a while, and still hurts some even now. BUT, my house did not feel like a home without a dog in it for long, and now I have my 10 year old labrador. I raised her from a puppy. She has been great and we've had lots of fun together, I hope she has many more years.

Go ahead and let yourself feel bad. Get out your sweeties photos, and make an album. Keep a little toy or his tags put away with mementos, but remove all other reminders of him that you can. At least for a while, until you feel better.

7. I understand.

I had to do it almost three years ago to Sandy, our sweet cocker spaniel/golden retriever mix who was 17-1/2 -- we adopted him from the shelter when he was just about 10 months old.

We know when we adopt these pets that they won't live forever but it is especially difficult when we have to make the decision ourselves. However, what you did was out of love and your little Sonic knew that he was loved. The pain will subside but he will not be forgotten. I'm sorry for your pain but thanks for sharing Sonic with us. :hug:

8. You did the right thing..it won't always be like this

You will remember your Sonic as the vibrant friend he was, not the ill dog that was in pain.

I am so sorry you had to go through this but he is out of pain now and perhaps it is the most generous thing we can do for our pets is to let them go rather than suffer.

I had to put my Maggie down in 1999, it still hurts but I know I made the right decision. You showed Sonic how much you loved him by ending his suffering. When I lost Maggie, my vet sent me a poem "Rainbow Bridge" that helped me. Here is a link to an online version.

10. I had to do that

to my beloved Gizmo cat in May of 2003. She was my animal soul mate and we were together for 14 years. I thought I would die when she left me... But it did get better. I still miss her and think of her often. I keep her picture by my bed.

11. Time WILL lessen the pain, I promise.

You will never forget your wonderful companion, but in time you will be able to recall wonderful moments you shared, and believe it or not, laugh through the tears.

May I make a suggestion? Find a favorite picture and have it photocopied onto heat transfer paper, iron that onto a piece of cloth that you can attatch directly to a pillow or iron it onto the pillow itself. You can hug, kiss, or just talk to the pillow, or go to sleep with it in your arms.

I did that on a pillow for my Beloved cats who died last year. I had to put down one of them, so I know what your pain feels like. Keep a picture around for now - it will help.

13. Hugs for You

I have 2 little boys. The youngest is a renal failure dog diagnosed at 5 months of age. I know everyday with him is a gift. And I fear the inevitable - knowing that if I love him someday I will have to choose to let him go rather than prolong his misery through a slow painful death. All of my furkids have had a special place in my heart. It hurts to lose them. It also hurts to watch them suffer. Sometimes it seems as if there are no good choices. Perhaps a peaceful passage might be considered a final gift by and to one who is suffering. I'm sure you did the best you could for the little furkid entrusted into your care.

14. Thanks to all for your kind thoughts and words

It has been a really hard couple of days. I still have these overwhelming moments of sorrow that I feel I will never recover from. I miss Sonic dearly. At times I think I see him or hear him in the house and the grief just overtakes me.

I did find a poem that has helped, although I cannot read it withour bawling my eyes out. I want to share for anyone who would have to go through this tough decision. Sometimes what is best for our loved pets is not what is best for us.
