I had a "trial adoption" with a Pomeranian named Bernie this past week, and unfortunately it didn't work out because he kept snapping at the cats (who really tried to warm up to him) and peed everywhere. He was the sweetest little snuggle pup, though! His owners were giving him up because he snaps at their 2 year old and every attempt to train him to do anything failed. Well, at least I proved to them that he could be trained! I used the clicker method, and although he had a slow start, he figured it out in the end. I think they're going to try to make it work again with him, which would make Bernie VERY happy! :-)

I just had to share these pics of the cute little guy. Having grown up with large dogs, he hardly seemed like a member of the canine family. Maybe the "animate plush" family, but canine? Lol!

Are the original owners taking him back? Maybe if it doesn't work out, they could find him a home where he could be the only "child"? Dogs and 2-yr-olds often don't mix.

and yes, I got the feeling that Bernie would have prefered a home where he was the ONLY pet! He needs a retired person or couple who can offer him their lap for most of the day; the world should revolve around Bernie, after all! ;-)

4. That's the perfect little dog for my mother

She's 83, retired and really misses having a pet. She has a nice yard too but would not be able to go out much with the dog. There are no other pets or small children. Because the dog is already middle aged, she might be pursuaded that she wouldn't outlive the dog.

If they still can't keep the dog, PM me and let me know. She lives in Northern Virginia.

the family is very wealthy; they have an estate in New York as well as a very nice home here in FL. NY isn't too far from VA.

5. How old is Oberon?

You mention he's still growing. But I do know, with Maine Coons, that they're not full grown till age 4! A 1-year-old MC is still a kitten--no wonder they're such big babies!

9. Sorry to hear the Pom didn't work out.

I see he's shaved down, and then I read that you're in Florida, so that makes sense. :) Up here in the Great Frozen Northland, it hasn't gotten warm enough even in the summer, the last few years, to clip my Pom.

Anyway, I agree Bernie is a cute little guy, so hopefully he'll find the perfect home. Oberon is a gorgeous cat, too!

10. I'm hoping that since I've proved to the owners that

he CAN be taught, that they'll try the clicker training with him themselves and decide to keep him. They really do love him, and so does their child, but the snapping is, understandably, a concern. I think if they can manage for just one more year, all will go smoothly for them. Two year olds are a bit much for any pet to deal with, especially a small one.
