What are you getting your pets for holiday gifts? I'm at a loss...

Something they need like my new adopted Chis need coats and little booty shoes. But, what do I get them for fun?

1. Question: what species of pets do you have?

For dogs: chew toys, tug-of-war toys, etc.

For cats: catnip toys, remote control mice, interactive toys, etc.

I don't know what to recommend for other pets.

2. Treats gift bag from

www.halopets.com. My cats are just wild for Liv-A-Littles chicken treats (Puck with scratch non-stop at the fridge door if she thinks there's some in there). The kitties also love "Boogymats" (sold at PetsMart or PetCo), and "Da Bird" feather toy (sold at Fosters and Smith's online). For dogs, these homemade treats are a hit:

Alexander's Peanut Butter Dog Biscuit Treats

I N G R E D I E N T S
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cups safflower oil (or canola oil)
2 medium eggs
3 tablespoons peanut butter (sugar free, creamy)
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cups unbleached white flour
1/2 cups cornmeal
1/2 cups rolled oats

Additional flour for rolling

I N S T R U C T I O N S
Preheat oven to 400 F.

Mix water, oil, eggs, peanut butter, and vanilla with a wire whisk. Add flours, cornmeal, and oats. Combine with a mixer.

Take one-third of the dough and place on a floured surface. Flour top of dough. Gently knead, adding more flour as necessary to form a pliable dough (This will require
a substantial amount of flour). Roll out to 1/2 - 3/4 inch thickness and cut shapes using cookie cutters. Repeat until all dough is used.

Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 400 F, 20-25 minutes, depending on thickness of biscuits . Leave in oven 20 minutes after turning oven off to crisp.

Store in an airtight container


I substitute 2 tablespoons oil plus 1/2 cup apple sauce for the oil when making these for overweight pets. I use breed cookie cutters (made some in the shape of corgis recently for some friends dogs) they loved them!

3. I just go hunting

in a locally owned pet supply store. I use Dr.s Foster and Smith on the web for my lab's meds and other stuff and this year he'll be getting one of their "ramps" to help him in and out of the car (arthritis) but for treats and stuff I usually just hit the local supply store and go nuts. He's already got more toys than most kids I know so I stick to treats and chews mostly but there's always something new in the "just gotta have" aisle so we'll see what this year's excursion brings once I've done it. It's my favorite and easiest shopping trip - he never returns anything. ;-)

4. Was in a pet shop today

but couldn't decide what to get. Told the lady I needed a dog toy but the dog hadn't given any hints as to what he wants.:shrug: I know what he'd really like to do is to play with the furry bear-like toy I took when we picked him up from the breeder almost four years ago. But he doesn't know how to play "nice" and I don't want him to tear it up. Had to take it away from him last night and put it up on the mantle with the Christmas bears. Now all he does is stare at the mantle and whine.:cry:

5. Target usually has a big bag of dog toys

in red/green or blue/white for $15 or so. Much cheaper than buying individual toys. I usually buy one bag for my three and let them decide who gets which toy. Haven't been to Target yet this year, hope they still have them.

6. I'm looking at getting a new kitty condo

saw some good ones at the local pet shop. The one I have is really torn up but the kitties love it.
