OW! Gideon had a huge broken bloodfeather

and we had to pull it. :cry: It was a tailfeather, and the break was pretty bad, so there wasn't much choice--they can be like a straw leaking blood out, and birds can bleed to death that way. But it hurt bad, and it was all bloody and icky. I hate it when this happens! :cry:

Birds can go from healthy to really, really sick so quickly. You had to do it.

I have a Grey, and when she broke a blood feather, I paid the ER visit, for fear of her passing.

I always come here before I go to sleep, for the great pictures.

I have never experienced a bleeding episode so far (knock on wood!).
If it were a serious bleed, I would probably use the styptic AND try to get her to a vet.
To be entirely comfortable though, I would ask your vet.

9. flour, even

cornstarch works better than styptic, as it does not sting. flour will do. my grey broke open the wound when she got chipped. i took a handful of flour, and held it against her chest. the bleeding stopped, and it took some real scrubbing to get it all off my hands. it was like cement.

It is a pain to find one. She had a really good doctor and when I called to make her check up appt. he was gone. She had pulled all her red tail feathers out (during a molt). He did all kinds of tests on her, and called as each came back. He did unbelievable follow up.

I wish I could find a doctor to care as much about me, as he did her!
