Errrggghhh! Anyone catch the Daily Show tonight?
It was a hit piece on Dean and the Dems who were in the running for DNC Chair. I like to poke fun at my own and myself, but this WAS NOT funny.
I feel sick, I'm going to bed.

1. Uh-oh.
I was looking forward to it (I'm here on the West Coast, and we usually do not watch it until 10 PM).

Bummer. I don't think I'm going to like that either.

I hope Mr. Stewart is not forgetting who made him - his audience - the Progressives.

Couldn't be. He's so humble.

2. Stewart is an equal opportunity comedian, and we can't be so thin skinned.
If we can dish it out, we have to be able to take it, too.

3. Did you SEE it?
It wasn't even funny. Just a slap in the face, not only to Dean, but to the others, too.

4. I am wondering when people will notice his show is changing.
There is still criticism of Bush about once a week, this during the most outrageous time in our history. This illusion of reality we live in could be shown clearly by him. He does have bright moments.

Yes, that was totally uncalled for and very ugly. However, doesn't CNN own Comedy Channel now? I thought they bought it out recently.

He has always gone after Democrats equally, just like Bill Maher, that is how they make their living.

To me the difference is this: Historically, comedians and cartoons have been the first to address serious issues in our country. This time, their voices are not that loud.

This is not a matter of being thin-skinned. This is about going after the Democrats more than the Republicans who are ruining this country.

5. It's on the TiVo, but I haven't watched it yet.

And there have been things on the Daily Show that haven't made me laugh, but plenty that does.

Edited to add: Considering that Stewart and Dean have exchanged "appearances" on each others' shows (remember Topic A?), and seem to be very cordial if not downright friendly, Dr. Dean might just be happy that TDS finds the DNC race to be important enough to take a shot at.

Viacom owns Comedy Central.

6. Right, MTV etc. own it.
I did see something about part of it being owned by the Time Warner which owns CNN, last I heard. I think a lot of the changes happened in 2003.

Who owns Comedy Central?
COMEDY CENTRAL is owned by Comedy Partners, a wholly-owned division of MTV Networks. (which appears to be owned by Viacom).

Not going to argue about a show. We occasionally watch, but we all have our opinions. If a show upsets me I don't watch for a while.

If Bill Maher makes me mad, I won't watch him for a while. Just because people are comedians doesn't mean they don't act like a**holes sometimes.

That was ugly, reminiscent of the Kerry stuff they did.

7. didn't see it... but remember, it's comedy!
I watch the rerun at 1130 and give my views later.

(I can hear the suspense building! :P)

8. That was very dark comedy indeed.
As I say, even comedians can be a**holes. This was really odd. I notice at Kos that those were irate when he was going after Kerry so much, are now saying it is fine....he is a comedian.

He got into this popularity NOT from the right wing....

11. OK, just watched it, and I have to say I thought it was funny.
The opening stuff with Stewart was hysterical — "The Democrats chose a doctor so he could reattach the ass they lost in the election" (paraphrasing), and the "snakes!" shtick was great. Bob Wilfong isn't my favorite on the show. If it can't be Stewart, at least Stephen Colbert is pretty good. So that stuff was so-so, but Stewart made me laugh out loud.

we own a lot of those comments made last night. I'm not happy about it but sadly, it's sort of so.:(

14. Something bothers me about this thread.
I see nothing wrong with finding something offensive personally. I really don't.

I think we all have a right to disagree with comedians. I think comedy is a personal thing. It should not be a one size fits all thing.

A couple of us here disagreed with Stewart's comedy. I think that is fine to do that. I saw people really bashed on Kos the other night when they said anything.

I have a right to disagree with a comedian. There is nothing wrong with that. I like a lot of what he does, but I don't like everything. I like Bill Maher sometimes, but he can often be clueless and sometimes shows a lack of research.

I am not afraid to say what I think, and I don't think I have been offensive about it.

And no, the world will not stop turning. I did not like that he called Dean a loser, that is my right, my taste. I like a lot of what he does.

We need to not do this.

15. I agree that comedy is a very subjective thing.
I realize that some folks just love South Park, and I don't get it, but it's their prerogative to like whatever they want.

And I guess even some folks like Dennis Miller, but I wouldn't want to meet any of them in a dark alley.
;)

18. Yes, but we know that Jon Stewart is on our side, as is his audience.
He's had to calm them down when he has had politically conservative guests.

I also don't "get" "South Park," but this is subjective. As for Dennis Miller, he's just a conservative jerk, and I wouldn't watch him any more than I'd watch FAUX News.:-(

But I had higher hopes for Jon Stewart. I do know that he likes Howard Dean. I would have thought he'd give him credit for his DNC victory and the rejuvenation of the Democratic Party.:-(

19. But Stewart isn't about reporting...he's about making jokes.
He consistently points out that he's not a newsperson, he's a comedian.

21. Absolutely. But he still has an agenda, as does his audience
He can't get away with dissing the Democrats for long, and I can't imagine why he'd want to.

20. Yes, political satire goes both ways.
However, Jon Stewart did not rise to such fame because of the right wing. I think that when satire bothers me, I have a right not to watch, and I have a right to be critical.

That is my problem with this thread, that people are afraid of Stewart being criticized. Those of us who did not appreciate his show that night have a right to say so.

I like many of his shows. I also don't like some of them.

17. No, I missed it, for the first time in weeks.
I went to the movies with my friend, whose mother died six months ago, since it was her Mom's birthday, so she didn't want to be alone, tonight. But she also loves this show.:-(

I'll see if I can find it.

I just hate when Jon Stewart criticizes the Democrats, since I know that he's one of us. And to criticize Howard Dean, when we should be celebrating his election to DNC Chair, which could do so much to rejuvenate the party, is just one huge blooper.:-(
