Where the Wild Things Are OT? Maybe, maybe not
I considered posting this in the lounge, but I don't want derision and ridicule following me today.

Has anyone else here seen "Where the Wild Things Are"?

I took two of the grands to the $3 movie place yesterday. One of them is 9 and one 7. They were totally engrossed. And it could not have been better timing because the 9 year old had a total meltdown the day before. The movie was a perfect way for him to process and integrate some of the things happening in his life right now.

As for me, I loved the movie. It's not a typical Hollywood movie. Thank God. It is dark, but hopeful. It's also sweet without being saccharin. I think they did well by the book in capturing the feel, look and emotional impact. I think the emotional impact was even more because it is an enactment rather than pages in a book. This might be too scary for children younger than about 6, but it would depend on the child.

The themes were not lost on the kids I was with and after we got in the car and howled for a bit, :silly: there was a fairly intellectual discussion of the different aspects of the movie. My granddaughter wants to meet the actor who played Max.

As for me, I'm going to see it again. I'm going to try to find it on an IMax. I can equate this movie as being on a par with "The Wizard of Oz" and that's saying a lot since that's my favorite movie.

1. Since this is about a movie, you could post it in the Entertainment Forum

and no one will ridicule you. Otherwise, I haven't seen the movie so I can't discuss with you but others will no doubt who have.

2. Well, I'm wondering if movie therapy
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 03:19 PM by BanzaiBonnie
could be considered alternative healing

I didn't know there was an entertainment forum. Is there a way to move a thread or should I just let it sink? That would be fine with me. I just relate more to you here as family and respect your ideas and opinions.

The day before yesterday, my grandson had a sobbing, can't catch your breath, meltdown. I sat near him and let him talk. I just shut up. I did get good and solidly heart centered and let that wash over him. He's working to make sense of things going on in his life that are beyond his control. Th movie fit the bill for working some things out on a level that he could relate.

Do we experience healing through movies, books, music? Other entertainments?

There is an active post about Avatar. I think we may have particular perspectives that may not be held by the general public. I tend to look at everything through my spiritual eyes.

3. Oh don't have it removed. Like I said, I'm sure others will come in with
a conversation. I wasn't sure what you wanted and if it was to discuss the movie's merits with other fans, then you might find that discussion in the Entertainment Forum. I'm sure those into healing will respond. Like I said I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment.

4. I haven't seen the movie,
but my daughters, now 21 and 25, loved the book, and one of their classes in 3d grade produced a play/video of it. Great that the themes were not lost on your grands!

I remember seeing the promo, and thought it looked too dark, and I know that Sendak can be perceived that way, so to each his/her own.

7. It is dark, but that's a part of our nature
It's important to recognize that part of ourselves and learn from it.

The wild in us is important.

5. I've been trying to think of a movie to see for New Year's Eve.
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 06:05 PM by I Have A Dream
Our tradition is to go to dinner and then see a movie on New Year's Eve. This sounds wonderful, and I think that my husband would also enjoy it. I'll see if I can find it!

Thank you so much for the recommendation, Bonnie. I love it when movies are discussed here. :)

10. Me three!
This is another film I'm anxious to see. And I agree that movies can be very healing and bring things to the surface that were not yet conscious.
Sometimes it's easier to recognize something in ourselves by observing it
in other's experiences. Holding up the mirror. True of all the arts, me thinks, which is why they are so important to our well being and collective sanity.

9. I've seen it.

I thought it was a lovely interpretation of Sendak's work. Deep enough for adults to enjoy along with their children. Well done. Loved it!

James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) turns in a great voice performance as 'Carol' in this film, too.

Agree it might frighten very young children, but it touches on many important themes suitable for older children, and is bound to spark great discussions such as you had with your grandkids. :)

Well worth seeing!
