In regards to Japan - there is the "Kokumin Kenko hoken" (citizen health insurance)
Very simple system, % is taken out of paycheck and it covers quite a bit. I was hospitalized for exhaustion, had a private room, a battery of tests (nothing found) stayed for a week, IV all day, every day, and paid surprisingly little in co-pay.

Have used so many of the "cures" over the past few years.
Big Med & Pharma will try to sequelch before too long, I fear.
