Facebook
Hi, everyone!

Many of us in the group often talk about being friends in Facebook. I just wanted to make it clear that many of us would love to be Facebook friends with anyone in this group, so please don't feel excluded in any way or not valued.

At this time, I can only speak for myself, but I'd love to be Facebook friends with anyone here. Please just send me a PM if you're interested. (I have to warn you that I do play games, so you'd have to hide the games.)

I don't want anyone to think that they're valued less than anyone else. :loveya:

I do understand that some people want to maintain their anonymity or don't want to merge this with other parts of their lives, so please don't feel as though I'm pressuring anyone. I just want you to know that the offer stands.

If anyone else here wishes to extend the same offer, you may post it here as well, if you wish. :)

101. I love cute dogs.
I am a dog person. I cannot stand cats.

However, I am unfortunately allergic to cats and dogs both. Cats are really insufferable. I have a friend who is a sweet little Boston Terrier. She can lick my skin and I don't break out which is really shocking to me.

21. Speaking for myself, Blue...
but I spend most of my free time on the computer. This isn't good because I'm a computer programmer, so I'm at the computer all day at work as well. However, I'm addicted. I don't watch any television, so I sort of count it as being equivalent to TV time that other people spend, and my family is on Facebook, so it's a way to interact with them as well. (I don't have any family in my area.)

It would probably be healthier if I had more balance in my life. As a vice though, it's not too bad. :)

Girl, I've got tons of taped shows waiting for me to watch once I'm done on the computer from the wee mornings to late afternoon. Then there's writing and drawing. We all do juggle differently and there's no need to feel bad for not keeping up. Thanks

24. Seconded
I need one of those "full screen" writing programs--one that covers up my e-mail and my browser windows and "forces" me to work instead of...oh...just taking a little peeksie at DU...and then, while I'm online, a little peeksie at FB...and before you know it, hours have gone by, and I haven't written a word. I am so weak!

I WISH I didn't watch any TV, but alas, that's not the case. Right now I'm in my fallow period, with only Mad Men on my docket, but in a matter of weeks I'll have episodes of a dozen shows stacked up on the TiVo, waiting for my attention. When MG Jr. is in school, I tend to watch something while eating my breakfast and another show while eating my lunch, but sometimes I can't keep up. If only I'd ditch the stoopid shows I'm still watching and don't know why, like Gray's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives... :P

37. Me, too.

I do believe a FB purge is in my near future. While I love discussion about many things because I am usually open (don't see things in black or white), there is no discussion with many people. They have a set worldview and that's that -- they preach and judge and talk down to anyone with a differing, or even questioning, viewpoint.

Too draining and just not necessary to have in my life, I'm realizing.

Yep, "Hide" is one of Facebook's better features. I have 50,000 games hidden myself.

In reference to the "Hide" though, would you still see them if they respond directly to one of your posts? (i.e., would it just hide their original posts?) I think that that has been my experience, but I'm not sure. I only have one or two people's stuff hidden, and they're not people with whom I would frequently exchange comments.

Put me in the category of getting a lot of real names/screen names mixed up, but that sort of makes it fun. I don't spend a ton of time on Facebook (though the city STILL has not cleaned up that viaduct!!). Occasionally I will post bird pics.

So far I think I have avoided Satanic groups. :silly:

Giving Heart.
The facebook interface is so busy & fast changing,, can't save in a folder & check in like e-mail............
At this point I have totally lost track of ASAH, friends joined on fb, & user names vs real names?????????
In the first week I hid the "fundie" who sat up all night worried that God was punishing her;
the Rep. operative connected by marriage to a cousin, has subsided with his inner city ward pol activism. ( curious, his Mother is liberal & they conducted a few fb skirmishes in the beginning.)
My Dem County group is communicating on fb, running campaigns & planning meetings ( really handy, the 04 election, communication was limited to phone calls) Sitting Me. Congressmen, Pres Obama, State Legislators, candidates, all in one spot really handy!
I have a lot of psychics, astrologers, healers................not really by design, but obviously there for a reason.
Spread out relatives.............My Grandkids, local neighbors, ( make my haircut apts,.on fb now) old HS friends.............
ANd some people from other countries.........adding a different slant on the news/
All evolving positive people.
I did get a phishing video that forced me to change my password; botheration, but hopefully no more
So you are all welcome to friend me, I think this is the connection we all need!

However, I highly recommend any prospective friends to search my posts here in DU first. I'm fighting the Middle Aged Crazy (though I am harmless - it's the mouth, or rather, the typing that might offend), and the Bush years have made me a much more cynical and outspoken person than I'd like to be.

53. Try to reach them to find out why
Someone was using my brother's identity as a scam. They sent messages to some of his friends, saying they were my brother, that he were stuck in Europe and needed money wired to him immediately. One of those friends called my brother at home and told him about it. He felt extremely violated and notified all his friends not to fall for it. He said Facebook was right on it and blocked his account for a few days, but re-opened it once it was investigated.

I was talking a while back with a friend of mine who was undergoing chemotherapy. We were talking about the drugs she was being offered, what she could handle and what she couldn't. I know our conversation was clearly talking about drugs prescribed by doctors, but it was interrupted with an alert that we were talking about things off limits for the site and they stopped our ability to chat any further. It was a little creepy.

67. Interesting happenstance.
I hooked up last night on Facebook with a classmate of mine. We met in organic chemistry class, I think over 20 years ago. She still remembers the sketch I did of our professor at the chalk board that makes her giggle to this day. Too funny, I'd completely forgotten it.

The funny thing is I was thinking of Dr. Hoffsommer all last week and what a great guy he was. I remember once, while studying stereo-isomers, I completely drew all the models for our lab report backwards but he gave me an A. I couldn't believe it and asked him why. He said it was obvious that I knew what I was doing - no one got every last one of them wrong  and the drawings were excellent. Luckily, I proved him correct on the exam.

He was an older fellow and I thought he'd died and that's why I couldn't stop thinking about him.

I forgot!!!! She's a DUer!!!

So cool, KoB!!!

I think it's only a matter of time before it happens to you. Facebook makes the world that much smaller.

83. Ugh!
I'd have to hide them, and if they got really bad, I'd have to unfriend them. (Hiding doesn't stop them from posting in your threads or on your wall.)

One of my Facebook friends had me take care of her FarmVille farm while she was away on vacation, so I had to log into her account. The stuff that her friends were posting was absolutely appalling. My friend doesn't post these things, but I know that she's more conservative than I am. I could really feel my vibration lowering after working on her farm. (I had to go on her Newsfeed to pick up game items that people posted. Otherwise, I would have never gone there.) I was very happy when she returned.

Don't know what to do with it. But I'm working on that. My sisters pushed me into and I was like, we talk on the phone all the time, what's the point? But it is really great seeing photos of the kids that I wouldn't normally see, and reconnecting with people from long ago. It's really like picking up where we left off.

72. This is the guy who Facebook made stinking rich:
He's not the main reason I hate it, but certainly a good enough one:

http://www.slate.com/id/2271265/?gt1=38001

Why help finance his agenda?

How about considering setting up a group on My Space or Care2, instead?

73. I'm not trying to talk anyone into joining Facebook who isn't already on it.
If people are using Facebook for whatever personal reason they choose, it's another way for us to connect.

The important thing to me was that I didn't want anyone to feel excluded when we mentioned Facebook here in passing.

75. Thank you, silverweb.
The group does have a private forum that anyone in the group can join which our beloved MagickMuffin set up. (If anyone's interested in joining that group, MagickMuffin can create an account for you.) It has been used when people want to discuss something that they'd rather not put in as public a forum as this one. It can be used in any other way that people want to use it as well. (It's not just for that purpose.)

I understand your feelings of discomfort in reference to Facebook. It's very sad that almost everything in our society is tainted. :(

80. I appreciate the invitation.
However, I just don't have time for another group at this time, though I'll certainly keep the private forum in mind for the future.

As for good things tainted, that's the way of the world. I guess the best we can do is heavily favor those things with the least taint and do what we can to encourage them to be better. (Sounds a lot like the "lesser of 2 evils" option when voting, doesn't it?)

81. Yes, it certainly does feel like voting.
I know that someday the world will be different. I don't know if it will happen during our present incarnations, but, ultimately, it will happen. It's difficult to be patient though. :(

I do have to say that I reach a lot of people on Facebook. I play some of the games that are available on there, so I have friends from all over the world. So many people come to me and tell me that the things that I post have really affected them. For the most part, I'm just posting simple inspirational quotations, so I know that they must be extremely hungry for anything at all spiritual to have such simple things affect them so much. I've had some people send me messages telling me of their anguish, and I've been able to encourage them in very positive ways. Therefore, although Facebook definitely has its very negative points, the Universe is using it in positive ways as well. (It's sort of like how I found DU through Glenn Beck, and how OneGrassRoot's Wishadoo is receiving national attention because of him as well.) The Universe uses what we would consider to be negative things in very positive ways sometimes. :) I love that!

84. You're right and I'm sorry.
You're absolutely right about the Universe using negative things in positive ways. If I had an organization like Wishadoo, I'd be using every available tool to reach as many people as possible.

It's becoming quite obvious that my bias against Facebook has been focused only on individual users like myself for sharing pictures and information with friends and family.

Because I never used Facebook to promote a cause or organization, I didn't at all consider the logic and benefit of selecting the best tool for the job, however flawed that tool might otherwise be.

I plan on checking out creating a profile on there. I am hesitant to do anything much on Facebook since prospective employers check it out. I have indeed been offered the job I had mentioned in a previous post, but it has been delayed....so I am laying LOW for now.

I will try to set up a profile this weekend and learn the ropes. If I get anywhere with it, I will let you know the tricks...and if YOU learn how to get around, please let ME know!

I'm a charter member and have two Care2 accounts.

It does have its quirks and can be a little difficult to navigate until you get used to the setup.

How can I help you?

On edit: My Care2 page. I don't use it a lot because I don't have the time, but I check in regularly to see what's up.

93. You PM by either clicking on the little envelope...
to the right of a person's name in a post or by clicking the 'Inbox' icon at the top. If it doesn't show for someone, they don't accept PMs.

If you want to be able to easily send PMs to people with whom you interact here, you can click the icon of a person with a green plus sign which is also to the right of the person's name in a post. That will add that person to your buddy list, which is in the left hand column when you open the Inbox. Then, to send that person a message, you can open the Inbox, click on the buddy list, and then click that you want to send that person a message. If a person's not on your buddy list, you can open the Inbox, click on 'User Profiles' in the same area where the buddy list is, type in the person's username (or some of it), and then click on the envelope icon next to their name there. (I hope that I haven't confused you.) Maybe there are easier ways, but I don't know them.

I'll send you a PM telling you my name so you know that the request is from one of us. :hi:

97. I hate FB, but I think we may need another website to congregate at soon.
As some of you know, I cannot look on the bright side regarding the upcoming changes in our collective. I think Democratic Underground could be a lot less fun to post at after the Uranus/Pluto square returns in March. I was just wondering if any other places to post were available.

98. Outside of Facebook, there is a group..
that MagickMuffin set up after the original free site that she and OneGrassRoot set up expected us to start paying for it. However, very soon after this second group was set up, we encountered the same problem -- they too changed their structure so that there was no longer a free group offering available. We paid for the first upgrade and found that it wasn't private at that level. We tried to get additional information, but encountered problems getting our questions answered. (At least, that's my understanding of the situation.) MagickMuffin would be able to better describe what the current status of the site is.

99. I forgot about it until I saw this, but there's also a private group set up at Wishadoo...
for ASAH if it's ever needed as well.

It's not visible to anyone not a member, and you have to be invited to join, but if ASAHers join Wishadoo, let me know, and I'll send an invite to that group...in case it's ever needed as a gathering place. :)
