1. I'm not sure what can be done to help that thread now.

Seems like whenever that one DU-er shows up, that's it; the thread devolves into something other than the OP intended.

One thing I just thought of, though: when you emailed KO, did you mention that Wishadoo was "featured" on Glen Beck? :P Who knows, that might actually get more attention from them ;)

2. Honestly, I'm feeling really defeated suddenly...

I was just going to come here to vent. ;)

Between family crises, teabagger family members attacking me, Glen Beck listeners continuing to attack, ex-business partner attacking, interactions such as those in that thread (which are not unique or new and also occur in other parts of my life), not being able to afford expenses to keep Wishadoo afloat...and just the struggle of daily life and trying to keep a roof over our heads...I'm losing sight of WTF I'm trying to do any more.

To answer your question, Dear Kentauros, I wrote KO and the free clinic people prior to the Glenn Beck incident. :)

I'm going to focus on work-work and try to shake this off. It's all so tiring and beyond disappointing...

KO wouldn't be more apt to pay attention to your email? Maybe if you send him another email, and note that it's Wishadoo -- something beck has called out -- he'll see this time? I hope so.

maybe you can explain why charity is perceived to be so "evil"? In my opinion, I don't see why we can't have charity and awareness. Wouldn't they go hand in hand anyway? Or is this just another example of people that can truly only think in terms of black/white, yes/no, left/right and not the whole picture? ;)

I love what bigmonkey wrote in that thread, btw. Jim Wallis has so many wonderful things to say. :)

I can't begin to speak for another, especially another I've had zero luck in really interacting with. One of two people in my entire life (to this degree, at least).

I think the gist of that perspective regarding "charity" vs. justice argument is very sound, and I think it comes down to the word itself: charity.

What is charity? I think it is one of many words that have become a pejorative and some actions are labeled as charity when that's not the intention.

If it is a way for those in a position to help, however minimally, to throw money or any other resource toward another in an attempt to feel superior and perhaps ease their minds, that's not a path most of us would agree with. That is how some, the person of whom you speak, seems to view most attempts to help another, probably for very good reason due to having been abused by the system for so long.

If helping another in any way possible to alleviate suffering, while simultaneously working toward fixing systemic issues is also deemed as "charity" and thus bad, then I don't know. This is the path I embrace. I see it as being a decent human being and easing pain however we can; not sweeping the root causes under the rug but addressing the acute pain (symptom), as well as working to change what has led to the pain to begin with.

8. While I can understand the charity issue

I don't agree that we should do away with charity. To me charity means loving kindness to someone who is in trouble.

I'm sorry this is all hitting you so hard.

Let me know if there's anything I can do. I'm here to talk any time if you need either a sounding board or just want to rant. I'm feeling that you're taking this all into your body and it might be good to have a nice "rant" session. Anger does have its place and that place is not in your body.
