The Winter Solstice, Lunar Eclipse, and Mercury Retrograde conjunct Pluto & Mars.
“But we are not those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and keep their souls.” Hebrews, Ch. 10, Vs. 39. The Bible
As an astrologer, I take my place among those who are prophets and prognosticators of things to come. I would like to refine this to say that we predict the issues, themes, and conditions that are destined to arise in our lives. The “things to come” will be determined by our responses, both collectively and in our individual lives. It is the choices we make that will truly determine our present and future times.
This month’s configurations offer up many challenges and there are few who will be able to remain in denial or “asleep” with regard to the failing economy, the degrading of the environment, the monumental selfishness of monopolistic corporate culture, and the proliferation of extremist fundamentalist religions saturated with the “culture of hate”.
These are the issues of our times and they are rising on the horizon this month for all to see:
1. The lunar eclipse conjunct Pluto of this past June 26th, is being re-activated by the Mercury retrograde conjunct both Pluto and Mars in Capricorn between Dec. 6th and Dec. 14th (Mercury is retrograde from Dec. 10th through Dec. 30th). The Dec. 21st lunar eclipse is at a critical 29 degrees Gemini, hitting off the “world points”. It’s path runs through Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and along the coast of Somalia.
2. The BP oil eruption comes up again as more information may be released with regard to long term destruction of Gulf and Atlantic ecological systems and the corporate culture’s avoidance of the rule of law. There may even be another environmental crises of significance that comes to our attention. This year’s proliferation of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mining disasters all are highlighted again this month. The Icelandic volcano, the Indonesian volcano, the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, plus volcanoes and earthquakes elsewhere that did not get the coverage in the press, are all re-emerging.
3. Pluto and Mars are planets associated with violence and war. We are engaged by occupation in Iraq, actively in Afghanistan, and by occupation in the border regions between No. and So. Korea, (recently attacked by No. Korea) and still have occupational military bases in Germany and Japan. Increased security measures in airports will be stepped up this month as terrorist threats are increased. The tensions in the charts of Pakistan and Mexico are re-activated. In Pakistan, Saturn will square their 10th House Mars this month with a sextile to their Moon coming up in January and February. This portends a change in leadership there.
4. The eclipse path suggests conflicts involving Russia, possibly in their relationship with Iran where the U.S. believes in the possibility of nuclear weapons being developed. Recently, Saudi Arabia arrested an extensive terrorist group there and Osama bin Laden’s group have been releasing videos warning of more terror attacks. Somalia is an impoverished failed state that produces terrorists and pirates.
5. President Obama is pressing for the signing of the START Treaty and the Republicans are willing to put U.S. security at risk by delaying this, just to hurt the president’s credibility. This is not the time for the politics of hate.
The Economy:
Although rising earlier, between the 6th and the 7th, financial markets could be very unsteady as Mars reaches a critical degree of Sagittarius. Mercury reaches this degree between the 18th and 20th and Mars is square Saturn between the 28th and the 30th. Last month’s currency crises in Europe with talk of the European Union bailing out Ireland, all seemed to strengthen the dollar. Venus transits Scorpio from Dec. 1st through Jan 7th of 2011, whose aspects to Jupiter and Uranus suggests strengthening of gold, silver, and energy stocks.
The economy of Main Street continues to worsen this month as retail sales will likely be up the first week and then down until after Christmas. Young people today are frequently choosing to join the military or the police force as the only areas they can get employment and some kind of education. State governments are in so much trouble that it will be announced this month there will be massive layoffs connected with local healthcare, public education, police, fire fighters, and state employees. Without a middle class that is employed with taxable income coming in, our civil infrastructure is crumbling.
The reality is that about 47% of the U.S. budget is being poured into the military. The budget deficits that are blamed on the old, sick and disabled are rallying the battle cry in Washington that we should downsize Social Security, Unemployment Benefits, and Medicare. These same guys helped forge NAFTA and other so-called trade agreements that enabled massive outsourcing of jobs to cheap labor abroad. This reminds me of the old fable about the trained frog. His owner was showing how when he called out “Jump!”, he jumped high into the air. When he cut off two of his legs and called out, the frog jumped, but barely. His owner claimed he just was not listening. When he cut off the remaining legs and called out to “Jump”, the frog did not move. The owner then said to the crowd: “He must be deaf”! Thus are the claims of right wing extremists in Washington and those who recently elected them.
Energy and War:
Middle Eastern conflicts and our need for their oil have fueled hatred for us over the years. But we have invested very little in sustainable energy and continue to cannibalize the planet for oil, gas, coal, and uranium. China is following the same path in its recent massive buying up of energy reserves all over the world and the massive use of coal in its own country. China is becoming a toxic sewer with unbreatheable air and undrinkable water. It would seem that they have followed the same unsustainable pathway as the U.S. and Europe and will lead them to sacrifice the lives of their people as well. Two world wars have been fought over these reserves and the hunger forged by the Industrial Revolution. The irony is that manufacturing, which has created the highest standard of living in history, by its very nature, burns fuel and creates massive amounts of toxic waste. It is choking our oceans, forests, and the air we breathe. It has contributed to climate severities that are escalating in their frequency. Current technologies such as solar panels and windmills can help, but cannot at this time duplicate the enormous amount of energy to meet growing global demand.
My prediction:
Between 2011 and 2024, a new and virtually unlimited supply of non-fossil fuel energy will be discovered and an infrastructure created for its supply. This will change the nature of civilization itself, and will be accompanied by a consciousness change in what directs human experience. An evolutionary leap in intelligence, compassion, and appreciation for the planetary biosphere will alter our direction.
(Eilen's note: I don't share her optimism in a savior technology. My best hope is that we gradually learn to live differently, more lightly but most likely we will end up with rations for the the poor and middle class so the top 1% can continue to use the dwindling resources)
Final thoughts:
This is the season of the Winter Solstice, Christmas, and Hanukkah; a time when ancient societies celebrated the year’s shortest day and the gradual emerging of the Sun from darkness into a future of longer light. It is a recognition that contained within the human heart lies the potential of a divine light, even though the cold and dark of the ages seems to descend upon us. It is a season when we examine the meaning of faith.
My personal experience with this expansive and controversial subject is that, for me, it is not clinging blindly to a singular historic figure or institution to make my decisions for me. It is not the proclaiming of “it is my way or the highway” that seems to be more prominent than ever in our time. Jesus Christ informed us that “the kingdom of God is within you” and that the miracles he accomplished could be ours. The Buddha informed us that if we “see the Buddha on the road, kill him”; that it is our personal responsibility to make the choice to be happy.
Faith is a realization that all compassion, wisdom and understanding resides in the universe itself and by opening our minds and hearts, we can access it by making the choice. We are told by scientists that the universe is a violent, turbulent, hostile place. I submit that we, at this juncture, we still know little or nothing about the nature of the universe. As I stand and gaze at the great constellations, an irrational hope rises that a greater and more loving intelligence inhabits all things, including each and every one of us.
May you have a holiday filled with irrational peace and loving kindness.
