I went to an introductory class on A Course In MIracles
ACIM saved my life in a very dark time in my life. It was if someone had thrown me a life preserver. It's been many years since I've studied the words. They are some of the most beautiful words I've ever read, next to Rumi. Did you know that part of the course is in iambic pentameter? That's the style of writing that Shakespeare used.

Do you know the history behind ACIM? It is a miracle in itself that the material was brought forward? Two professors of psychology at a prestigious university, both driven professionals and with very different personalities. I watched a video on the beginnings of ACIM. One of the things I learned is that Marshall Rosenberg was a student of ACIM. Well, that sure makes sense. Every time I read one of the Rosenberg books, my ability to see clearly different situations and to communicate in a more fulfilling and joyous manner becomes easier. It's such a simple system. It just takes practice and understanding your own feelings and triggers.

This is a bit of the beginnings of ACIM: http://acim.org/Scribing/about_scribes.html

It was therefore a rather startling event when, in the Spring of 1965, Bill delivered an impassioned speech to Helen in which he said that he was fed up with the competition, aggression, and anger which permeated their professional lives, extended into their attitudes and relationships, and pervaded the department. He concluded and told her that "there must be another way" of living—in harmony rather than discord—and that he was determined to find it. Equally startling, and to their mutual surprise, Helen agreed with Bill and enthusiastically volunteered to join him in a collaborative search to find this other and better way.

It was as if Helen had waited all her life for this particular moment, which triggered a series of internal experiences for her that carried through the summer. These included heightened dream imagery, psychic episodes, visions, and an experience of an inner voice. The experiences also became increasingly religious, with the figure of Jesus appearing more and more frequently to her in both visual and auditory expressions.

This period of preparation culminated on the evening of October 21, 1965, when the now familiar voice of Jesus said to Helen: "This is a course in miracles, please take notes." Troubled, she called Bill immediately, and he reassured her that she was not going mad. He suggested she write down what was being dictated to her, and that he would look at it with her early the following morning at the office. Helen did just that, which is how the scribing of A Course in Miracles began. As Helen later described the experience:

"The Voice made no sound, but seemed to be giving me a kind of rapid, inner dictation which I took down in a shorthand notebook. The writing was never automatic. It could be interrupted at any time and later picked up again. It made obvious use of my educational background, interests and experience, but that was in matters of style rather than content. Certainly the subject matter itself was the last thing I would have expected to write about."

1. I keep seeing the words 'Course in Miracles' this past week or so
so taking it as I guess I need to read this. Ordered a copy thru my library a few nights ago.

Interesting that this material was dictated at about the same time as the Seth materials. And I didn't know about the Rosenberg connection. Thanks for posting!

4. It's a very deep course
takes years to get through and absorb it all. You can easily tell that it was not written by "humans". Also, I've checked out the 1965 chart of the first download and it appears to be very real and channeled. It is a personal course, up to you. It is brilliantly conceived. Yet, many people don't like it because it treats everything as if it were an illusion. Not for everybody. The accompanying workbook gives 1 lesson per day for a year. Not easy. In a large way, it says what all the other books say, but is a bit different. Much has been written about it.

It's basically about 2 things.
1. Forgive everyone and everything (not the same definition as you probably have for forgiveness) more like LET GO
2. Let the Holy Spirit do the rest of the work for you

In essence, it says that you, of yourself, CAN do nothing, it's all done by the Holy Spirit.

It also says that you have NO CHOICE, you WILL take this course at one time or another, the only question is WHEN.

Intense stuff.

Good luck

12. I have it, have tried reading it once
and yes, did have difficulty wrapping my mind around the "nothing is real" part. I suppose I will eventually get aroundto picking it up again.

3. I've taken Silva Method, and the CIM has popped up
many times during my life, but I've never actually gotten down to reading and studying it. I hold it up there with The Four Agreements in that it seems a lot to get through, but probably very worth it.

5. "Nothing real can be threatened, nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God." That is how the writer sums up the Course. This gives me peace.

I have been reading it off and on for about 5-6 years. I have started the workbook, which takes 365 days, many times, never finished. I am kind of anti-religion (especially the Chritian religions I have been exposed to) but this book feels right to me and basically it was dictated by Jesus so its weird to me that it would hit home for me.

I find alot of peace in reading it. I heard about from Marianne Williams.

6. I've never "studied" ACIM
I used it as a lifeline when going through a difficult and very dark time. I would let the book open to whatever page it would open to and begin reading. It brought peace and perspective into my life at a time I felt very alone.

7. I do that too. It always seems to open to something helpful to my state of mind.

I have avoided going to study groups because I'm afraid that the message will be diluted by other people's interpretation of the words. I don't consider myself a "follower" of ACIM, but it has been the most helpful to me of all of the spiritually oriented or self-help books I have read.

Alot of it is very poetic, which makes it nice to read. There have been several smaller compilations of passages from the book; "A Gift of Peace," Accept this Gift," ect., which read like books of poetry.

9. I love the story, and may finally buy the book and workbook.
For now, I've been re-reading A Return to Love, by Marianne Williamson which is based on lessons from ACIM.

10. Reading it for years
I've been reading it for about 5years now, at first I got thru half a page and said I can't read this. Kept going back and it all fell into place. I keep leaving it but always go back, it's a slow read for me. I recently downloaded the app and started doing the lessons. It's fitting my life right now.

15. I've heard about this book for a long time
and I can't decide after your comments if I should try to find it/purchase or not! I do have a thing/block against just letting go/let God. It's possible I still don't understand, but I'm sure a friend I know will soon be clarifying or trying to!

16. Hi Kimmers, can you help me understand?
I don't get what you've written here... Are you talking about A Course In Miracles when you write this? "I do have a thing/block against just letting go/let God."

17. That's my feeling
I was paraphrasing the general idea of a portion of what I gather the book is about. Wow, now I've confused myself!!
