Someone broke into my car last night..sort of.
The car was unlocked, so I can't really say 'broke into'. And they didn't steal anything but some change..mostly pennies, I think. Left the glove box open. Nothing else touched that I can tell.
Very, very, very strange.
The car was parked not eight feet from my door. I was home alone with my son.
I was freaked out for most of the day..I'm calm now, but husband is home. He leaves again tomorrow night.
Ak. :scared:
Not much I can do except leave the porch light on ( I always do, except for last night..that'll teach me) and lock the car and the house (I always do that).

1. Locking the car when it's on the street
is always a very good idea.

Here in Santa Fe it's astonishing how many people don't lock cars and apparently leave various things in plain sight, according to the daily police report in the paper. The report notes whether items were merely stolen or if the car was broken into.

4. Well,
it wasn't on the street..it was a good 50-75 feet up my driveway under the carport.
They had to walk up to it a decent ways. That's why I'm creeped out.

8. Oops. I apologize for not reading more carefully.
Yes, that should creep you out.

Sometimes when I read the various reports of theft/robbery in my local newspaper, I wonder if in some cases the car or location wasn't targeted by someone who either knew the person/car/location, or had simply observed what was going on. Maybe someone had noticed you got out of the car without locking it and decided to see if there was anything worth stealing.

Obviously, what happened is scary, and you ought to be able to feel safe to leave your car in the driveway or even on the street directly in front of your house without it being broken into in any way.

2. So sorry you were violated like that. I actually used to purposely leave my car unlocked,
in case someone needed a place to sleep. Now am in the country and lock it!

I have been homeless in the past and slept in unlocked cars quite often, especially in NW PA in the winter. It saved my life on more than one occasion.

It sounds as if you are very rattled. Take good care and stay safe.

3. Creepy
Sorry that happened to you, LD. Somebody went through my unlocked car at college once, and it freaked me out as well, especially because my college was so small and friendly. There was hardly any crime at all. They did the same thing--went through my glove compartment and stuff, and because there was nothing in the car, they stole my high school graduation tassel! :wtf:

5. You got lucky, lild. Leaving car unlocked ANYWHERE these days
is asking for theft. It sounds like kids, with nothing else gone, just for the thrill of it to see if they could get away w/it. Still leaves an uncomfortable feeling, I'm sure.
Count your blessings, the CAR could have been stolen

9. Oh, so sorry
I always feel violated when something like this happens. And, it has, quite frequently.............. I live in a high crime neighborhood. Actually, there isn't any way to escape a high crime neighborhood in this city.

The worst was when a notorious cat burglar pried open a window and set off our alarm. The police came and were basically useless. While the cops were still here, I had to figure out what had happened. My daughter and her dog were sleeping in that room!! That was freaky. TV News interviewed me for a segment on this notorious cat burglar. Later the guy was killed by a homeowner with a gun.

Just saying, I know exactly how you feel. Generally I leave my car unlocked though, just so they won't break the window to get in. That costs a lot to fix! Yep, we have had that happen too. We can't ever load our car up the night before a trip. If we lock the car with anything inside they just break the window. This all comes and goes in stages, usually depending on if someone is building anything around here.

Good luck!
