Been away from the computer for a few days, as I accompanied my daughter to Boston to audition for Boston University's theatre program.

Almost didn't make it; anything that could go wrong, did, as we tried to leave Thursday. I'm not big on making people do anything, including my own child, but I told her we have to try to at least get to the airport and see if they'd have seats for us after all, or I was afraid she'd regret it. I said a prayer en route to the airport that if this trip isn't meant to be for some reason, perhaps to save us from harm, that we won't be able to get seats. We got seats and ended up getting to the hotel in Boston at 3:00 AM. Oy vey.

Boston University is her holy grail. It is VERY hard to get accepted there; it's even harder to figure out how to afford it. :eyes: The smaller liberal arts college she's been accepted to may be easier to get a scholarship for, but BU is definitely the holy grail.

I ask that good vibes be sent her way for acceptance into BU (simply being accepted will go a LONG way for her self-confidence) and, if it's for her Highest Good, that a miracle happen regarding a scholarship and/or other financing.

Nearly every college to which she has applied has an annual tuition that is greater than my annual income. Oy vey again. ;)

Boston University's theater program is very good, and it's understandable that she'd want to go there. But if I may play devil's advocate for a moment...the chaos before your trip might be a message. Every time I've done something in my life and barrier after barrier was thrown up, I found it was a sign to consider an alternate route--sometimes I changed gears in time and I was grateful, sometimes I didn't and I ended up regretting it.

Might I make a suggestion--and definitely take it with a huge grain of salt but I feel compelled to post it, so I will--have her continue to apply to other schools with good theater programs. She might want to look into Emerson College in Boston--it also has a very well respected theater program and is smaller than BU (but, alas, also is not cheap). BU is enormous, which can be overwhelming (I went to BC for grad school so I know my Boston colleges! :D), and is not "THE" theater program by any stretch (I minored in theater so I know my drama departments too! :D). Other programs, like at Bard College and Syracuse U, are also very well known.

Now, I'm not saying she should apply to other schools because she might not get into BU, but she might come across one she likes better. When I was applying to colleges, I was convinced that I wanted to go to UC Hartford...till I visited. :puke: Then I felt "okay" about attending a college in Ohio--paid my deposit, went to summer orientation, and everything...and I got chicken pox that weekend! At 17 years old! :rofl:

Then I happened to visit another, small college by "accident", and the minute I stepped out of the car I knew I was "home". Everything clicked. It was like night and day--the difference between "kinda like" and "true love". Pulled my registration from the Ohio college and got my butt to the small college I clicked with--and never regretted my choice for a minute. You might want to impress upon your daughter that prestige and size might draw her in, but if she listens to her instinct, it might draw her elsewhere.

Hope this doesn't "stir the pot" and make things more complicated! Like I said, feel free to toss this advice in the trash if it doesn't resonate! :hug:

3. No, no....it's all good! :)

I recall you sharing this before (about how you fell in love with a small college by accident and just knew you were home), and I think about it often. :)

She's applied to many but only really likes three: BU, Muhlenberg (small college outside of Allentown) and Cornish (Seattle).

She's already been accepted into Cornish and, based on her recent audition in NYC with them, feels a real connection there. She visited over the summer and was "meh," but she loved the audition process with them and felt they valued her as an individual.

We'll need to make a trip out there (it will be my first and I'll be praying another relative will have airline mileage to gift us with or get an awesome rate) to check it out again if Cornish stays in the lead as an option.

We have to wait to hear from BU and Muhlenberg as far as acceptance, as they don't announce until April 1st.

The likelihood of getting a scholarship to Cornish and Muhlenberg is greater, that's for sure. But Seattle? Dear Goddess, that is going to be so hard. We're so close and, although I'm keeping that part out of the scenario when discussing it with her (though she expresses how hard it would be to be that far away from me), it will be so very, very difficult for a multitude of reasons. :cry:

Anyway, we'll see. I keep telling her let's see where all she is accepted, what financial options there are, and go from there.

BTW, we visited with a friend of hers who goes to Emerson while there. I personally love Emerson, but for different reasons Taylor didn't want to apply there. I don't know theatre, so I can't grasp why she chose to apply to the ones she applied to. ;)

You know, that's another thing--joining a huge theater department makes it less likely that you'll get a chance to be in a production. Quite like real life, I suppose, but I think when you're LEARNING about the performing arts, you should have many opportunities to DO your thang, instead of fretting and plotting how to get into a damned play before you graduate. x(

It's good that she recognizes that although Cornish might be nice, being that far away from home would be difficult. The drive home from the Ohio college was six hours; the drive home from my alma mater was 3 hours plus change depending on how efficient my leadfoot was...and even that was a huge difference. Proximity really is something to consider.

Ooh, what about Ithaca College? Great theater program, highly prestigious, plus that town is waaaayyyy liberal and full of magicks! :D

I was applying even well into the summer. Late applications are not unusual, and colleges are even more inclined to grant late admission if she's been accepted to lots of colleges already (I guess it's kind of a feather-in-the-cap poaching thing! :P )

Auditions might be another matter, but you never know unless you ask. Or, if she feels she must go to BU, she might even end up not liking it and transferring, which is also completely understandable. That way, if she has to go through some tough trial (by soul choice), once she finishes it, she can go someplace else.

9. True. That's the real negative about Cornish (the Seattle college)...

They are strictly fine arts, no academics, and thus credits wouldn't transfer if she decided not to continue there.

So, she's wrestling with whether or not the decision to go there is a test of how committed she is to theatre. I told I don't see it that way; it's simply practical to find a good theatre program, as well as a good academic program (she'd like to minor in journalism).

Decisions, decisions...this is a rough year for sure. ;)

I went to Ithaca's website and see she can still apply. I'm definitely going to encourage her to apply to others (even if it's more money, it's worth it at this point, so she doesn't feel constrained in her options).

I'm with you that if something seems really difficult, perhaps it's not meant to be. I can live with things better with that approach.

Taylor has a much different personality in many ways. Overcoming struggle and perseverance is a huge part of her makeup (I credit getting a black belt in tae kwon do at age 9 with that). Even if the "signs" were against us going (although I knew if we got on the flight, it would be okay; I trusted if it wasn't meant to be, we wouldn't have had seats), I knew she'd regret not giving it every ounce of effort to at least try to get there.

I personally struggle with this all the time though, and Wishadoo is the perfect example (as another "baby" of mine). How much effort should I put forth, for how long, before the Universe steps in to assist (believe me, I'm always asking and calling forth guidance and assistance), versus viewing ongoing struggle as "it's not meant to be."

I'm not in a mode of giving up on Wishadoo! or anything, I'm just saying it's a constant internal struggle and process to be mindful of the bigger picture when things are always difficult.

I think it's part personal makeup, part youth. :D Many people believe that if it's a struggle, a major uphill battle, then it's worth it, and a sign of personal fortitude if they exhaust themselves trying to overcome it. I used to think so too (damn, I have always been massively stubborn!) but lately I'm coming to the realization that you can bang your head against the wall and succeed, albeit with dain bramage, or go with the flow. But it's also easy to look at it as "taking the easy way out" which ain't good. I think the difference is the inclusion of instinct/listening to your heart. If you're in touch with your Higher Self and the voice of the Universe, you can figure out which way to go.

Oh absolutely Wishadoo is not dead--not by a long shot! But I suspect that an easier path to its success is coming. Yeah, timing is also one of those tough buggers...

Not for theater, but Norman Lear was in her class. Walked through it when visiting colleges w daughter.

Similar to you, what happened with my daughter. We'd visited a bunch and applied, when a friend invited her to visit another school, and voila, 'true love.' She'll marry guy she met w/in first semester there, in Sept!

I wanted to go to Emerson for undergrad (for writing, which it's also well known for) but my mom pitched a FIT (too far from home for her little girl, big city, etc.) I got to Boston eventually, though! Hah! :)

27. Was just about the only place my Mom could attend,

as her sister lived in Boston/W. Newton and had attended Emerson, and Mom's mom wouldn't allow her to be far from family. Family lived in Bridgeport, Conn, at the time!

Not sure of Mom's major; she's definitely the literary one in the family, and still think of 'calling' her for literary references tho she passed about 2 years ago. She ended up studying library science, and worked at The Boston Public Library. YOU surely know THAT one, MG!

When my daughter and I were in Boston for college search/trip, we walked through Emerson and bought Emerson t-shirt as gift for Mom. I have it now.
