Anyone here get a vibe on the Japan reactors & radiation?
I hate thinking thoughts like this...but then again, i guess it is the one thing you really cannot fight, wash off, or get away from.

I posted a Chrenobyl documentary in the videos forum, and watched all eight episodes today...(http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x567127)
Been avoiding the news about the Japan reactor because it's so convoluted anyway, you know the truth in these things is never spoken till most of the victims are long gone and nobody can do anything cuz they are all dead...

The whole thing has a very 'you get what you deserve' feeling to it. How arrogant is man, thinking he can manipulate these cosmic forces?
Same as that Large Hadron Collider, etc...we are just messing with gaia at every turn, how long before she rids herself of the infestation?

like i said, i hate thinking thoughts like this, especially on a dark and stormy night... :scared:

1. No particular 'vibes,' FL, but my thinking for a long time
has been that 'nature' gets the last 'laugh,' that is, our ability to think/reason, with or without arrogance, will do us all in, with or without arrogance; its human nature.

4. Do we have a clue what this means yet?
I get the sense it is much worse than Chernobyl, but do we even know what that means to the world?

6. Esentially what we have here is mutliple Chernobyls all at once
Chernobyl had a single reactor that blew. That particular explosion got launched higher into the atmosphere because of graphite used in the construction. This event has the highest grade of nuclear threat -- level 7.

Fukushima has 4 reactors that are in various stages of meltdown. Though the entire event has been awarded the "level 7" label, what we really have are 4 separate level 7 events happening at the same time.
Radioactive debris has been dispersed into the atmosphere (not as high as if there had been graphite or bigger explosions involved, at least) and is currently filtering its way around the globe; however, the real threat is to the ocean. The plant sits so close to the sea it's going to be damn near impossible to prevent leakage into the waters once all is said and done. They've already detected insanely elevated radiation levels in waters off the coast of the plant and in drinking water supplies to the surrounding area -- most notably Tokyo.

Japan is fucked. If they had any sense they'd start preparing for mass evacuations of the populace; at the very least young women and children in the surrounding areas, including Tokyo. It should also be noted that the city has over 13 million inhabitants. The entire estimated population of the country as of 2011 is roughly 128 million. How deeply this will affect the rest of the world remains to be seen.

Can you take a stab at this when you have time and energy, for those of us needing a simpler explanation (if there is such a thing with this situation)?

Thanks.

21. It's bad.
Really bad.

Plutonium is not a naturally occurring element. The only place this could have come from is the cores. It's pretty damning evidence that at least one of the containment units have been breached and the rods inside are melting/have melted. For the particles to be found so far outside the plant (one kilometer; just over half a mile away) also indicates that it was thrown there by one of the explosions -- plutonium won't just float away into the atmosphere all by itself.

As far as health risks go, external exposure poses relatively little risk -- the radiation effect stops as soon as you move away from the particles. However, internal exposure -- breathing in or ingesting the particles -- is far worse. The particles stay in the body and continue emitting radiation from the inside out. Expect to see a surge in bone, liver and lung cancers (areas of the body where plutonium tends to accumulate) in the areas affected by the explosions.

On an interesting side note, the atomic number of plutonium is 94 -- 13 if you add both digits together. Seems oddly fitting.

(I was always good with book reports in school, too. =)

5. A sacrifice
I just saw the headline in the paper (haven't read the story yet) that Germany has decided to give up its nuclear power completely because of this disaster. I got the feeling that the people of Japan chose a soul contract to teach the world this lesson and get us to give up nuclear power once and for all. And the people who have died in the earthquake and tsunami were also part of that soul contract. I'm just sorry that this reality had to happen. :( Now...can we learn the lesson or are we going to keep screwing up?

8. I have no ability to help give you an answer.... but I was listening to RedIceRadio recently..
as Sam Osmanagich was interviewed updating information about the Bosnian Pyramids and the underground tunnels they have found underneath the complex.

He believes there is a different kind of energy being produced.. And that a measurable type of energy is being emitted from the top of one of the Bosnian Pyramids. He maintains that this is a form of energy that was understood by people in the past.. This form of energy, he thinks , is something like what Nikola Tesla, who was born relatively close to the Pyramid complex..discovered but because it was 'free energy' his discoveries languished because there was not profit to be made by industrialists.

I couldn't help but wonder at the synchronicity of the events..

The Japanese nuclear disaster.. and the emerging tunnels under the Bosnian pyramids which seem to indicate a civilization that was attuned to the earth and water and understood energy in a much different manner than we understand it today.

My heart breaks at the anxiety and hardships being endured by the people of Japan, especially those living relatively close to the reactors.

9. That is interesting....
I say this all the time, but it's the truth: In this lifetime, at least, I simply don't absorb the specific scientific information that so many of you do. So many here are absolutely BRILLIANT.

But one thing I've always understood and believe in with every fiber of my being is that there is SO MUCH THAT WE DON'T KNOW. People, including so many within the scientific community, base everything on existing knowledge.

We can get beyond all of this by opening up to that which is currently beyond human comprehension.

My heart also breaks for those suffering....

12. Hi, OneGrassRoot.... It is so nice to talk to you..
I totally agree with you...

In the case of the Bosnian Pyramids, I have no idea whether this man is correct or not..and he was ridiculed for many a year..

But he has brought in experts in other fields other than just archeology to help interpret what they are finding. I would love to think that there is a form of energy understood by ancient peoples.. that can be understood and used by current or future generations.

He puts all their findings online for others to see and evaluate..and each year more volunteers and professionals go to the site to work and/or observe.

15. Hey guys, my hubby just found an interesting link
from the EPA and it's for real time sampling of radiation across the U.S. It's designed to provide a general understanding for the public. Apparently it was created especially for the Japanese nuclear emergency.

20. I think we were guaranteed a meltdown in the first 24 hours
And that we have had core on the floor for as much as a week now. The experts are beginning to admit that one core is sitting on the floor under the containment vessel (reactor 2), but I've seen reports that lead me to think there are three cores on the floor at the moment. The contamination of the area is of course cumulative (cesium isn't going to go and bury itself, and the hot cores are releasing more radionucleotides by the minute), so it isonly a matter of time before no one will be able to get near any of the reactors. If we're lucky they'll have gotten a hose into the fuel pools before it gets that hot, otherwise the fuel pools will join the cores (if they have not already: there's some evidence that the pool at 4 had a recriticality incident. That's when the fuel starts fissioning again on it's own, just like an operating reactor, after enough of it has melted into a configuration that allows it. The radiation emitted during active fission is so intense it is impossible to approach the area, even if on a suicide mission. One would die before getting anywhere near the fissioning material) . The end of the matter will be, if it isn't already, all or nearly all hot fissile material melted together with it's cladding and out of confinement.

The issue now is to figure out how to make the area as survivable as possible for as long as possible to mitigate as much environmental damage as possible. The threat is to the water table and the surrounding oceans. And if there isn't a permanent exclusion zone, I will be surprised.

None of this is intuitive, but based on what I know of physics (my major in college) coupled with some of the knowledge I've picked up from nuclear engineering documents I've been reading. It's a meltdown all right-- a simultaneous multiple meltdown. It's a nuclear engineer's worst nightmare, the sort of thing those grossly overoptimistic risk calculations say should not happen is many thousands of years. In fact nuclear energy seems to fail catastrophically every decade or two.

Even the worst case scenario (every mitigation effort fails and the cores end up in the water table, each exploding as it hits the water-- which is really really bad: the permanent evacuation of much of Japan), the world at large is not at threat.

Yes, no matter what our corrupt plutocratic leaders may say, nuclear energy is over. The people will make this clear in the coming political meltdown, a meltdown which is also only a matter of time.

16. The TEPCO officials.....
...at Fukushima are now saying the report of http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=4789051&mesg_id=4789051">high readings of 10 million times the normal radiation levels -- was a mistake. I hope this is true. But I can't help but be reminded that these are the same people who put a nuclear reactor on a fault-line to begin with.

Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 09:17 PM by Mnemosyne
In 1982, while riding down the freeway outside LA, I saw cars with open doors, seemingly abandoned. Vines, greenage were growing up, but not overwhelming yet. No people at all, just silent emptiness. It lasted a few seconds at most. I want to be wrong on that one also. :(

I hope I am very, very wrong on both. :(
