Have you ever taken a Myers-Briggs personality-type test?

It's based on Jungian personality types. I took one today and am finding the results pretty interesting and accurate - especially how it relates to my ideal work environment.

My result was INTP (Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving) i.e. a girl geek. What's your result?

When I was younger, I used to test as INTJ. I don't know whether that change is common or not.

10. I got that result at first - but the description didn't ring true.

INTJ - but realized I wasn't really assessing the way I make decisions correctly. I'm not very decisive, although I'd love to see myself that way.

I've found Myers-Briggs to be so insightful and helpful for understanding myself and others. I think it was the beginning of understanding that while I was a bit different from the "norm" it wasn't a bad thing. :)

The result I got is supposedly only 1% of the population and mostly it's men, not women. I have a tough time in traditional work environments. Fortunately computer programming allows for introverted freaks, usually. Although there's a recent tendency to hire too many "program managers" who want to control programmers with daily morning scrums, pointless meetings, etc. Like herding cats...

4. It's helpful to know that

the Meyer-Briggs test has never been independently validated, and most people get different results every time they take it.

I took it once, and felt it was total nonsense.

8. I took a couple different versions and got the same result.

However I think multiple choice questions between two options is too simplistic. For instance I can equally answer yes to being Organized or Disorganized. It depends on the situation and day and lots of factors.

Actually, I despise all forced choice tests, because all too often I have zero interest in any of the choices, or (equally annoying) I like both choices equally well.

And, as you've correctly pointed out, on those kinds of things it makes a difference when you're asked, or maybe what the context is. In my case, I am detailed-oriented in that I can recall details very well. When I was a paralegal, and was helping the attorney prepare to go to court (personal injury case, not a huge amount of paperwork) I could go through the paperwork and easily recall as I read one paper, that some of it connected to information in another page I'd looked at the day before. On the other hand, I was fired from a different paralegal job because I did not pay attention to the details I needed to pay attention to, especially in the paperwork I produced.

What is most useful about it is for folks to understand that not everyone proceeds in the same way. Extroverts like to hear ideas and respond right away, brainstorm or talk it through; Introverts like to get information in writing and mull it over before responding. Intuitives like to speculate and Scientifics like data (just the facts, ma'am.) Thinkers like logic and action; Feelers care about how people will feel about the actions being taken. Judgers are decisive, but can tend to cut people out of the decision-making process, while Perceivers like to involve people in the decision-making, getting lots of opinions and ideas. For a team what works best is to make sure you have a good mix of every style and that everyone appreciates that the others bring something valuable to the table, even if they work differently or it feels frustrating to deal with them.

Anyway, years ago I was an ENTJ. This January I was an ENFP. I told my staff I believe I have become a more feeling, caring person over time. Maybe that's even true?

Would have given an 'official' explanation to my coworkers why going to an open floor plan was so stressful to me (an probably to most developers).

The best tests give you a percentage for each. It's not really that black and white. For instance my parter is 51% to 49% extrovert - which pretty aptly describes him. He can be either in varying situations.

I've been an INTJ and and ENTJ in the past, however, and an INTP, too.

Describes me very well.

I have been doing these profiles for about four decades now. I like them and I think they explain much to me.

One thing, though. I often have my classes do them and it's amazing to me how many of my students are sensors. It is some combo--an ENTP and a class full of sensors. Sometimes I think my students think I'm nuts.

In regard to this group, it would be high with numbers of intuitives and thinkers or intuitives and feelers. That "N" is probably our most common characteristic here.

oh and p.s. I am pretty much 50/50 on thinking and intuitive. There isn't much, if any, of me that's a sensor or feeler. On the J or P (judger vs. casual, free spirit), I am also 50/50. One minute I'm planning and organizing and keeping everything in order; the next minute my house is a whirlwind disaster. It's back and forth, back and forth.

My GF was involved with a Jnana yoga group in LA and says most (90%) of the seekers who came through the doors were INFP. For a group that represents only one percent of the world population that's a very high concentration - as we see here.

Thanks for posting. I am so not happy with what I do for a living, and believe it or not, my job title is on the list. But what I do isn't actually what my title is. I'm supposed to be a web designer, but they have me coding credit card forms in java. BLECH!!! I wish I could figure out something else, but I've been at my current company for 25 years and only have 5 to go until I'm eligible to retire. I'll still have plenty of working years left in me then so I plan to retire and find something else to do - something artsy. It's interesting reading everyone's results. I have to get hubby to take it. My daughter ranked as an ISFP also. She's starting college to be an art conservator this coming fall.
