Honestly, I don't watch talk shows so I'm not promoting Dr. Oz though I do have a clue as to what he does. My mother, his biggest fan, called yesterday saying turn to "Dr. Oz, turn to Dr. Oz." And I'm like okay but didn't. Not only did he have a cardiologist who uses alternatives in her practice, the chief editor of the National Standard Research Collaboration, but also a "Skeptic" who Dr. Oz invited and you know why.

It's a must-see. Please try to watch it.

The three parts are only 4-5 minutes each and well worth watching.

When I went to the docotr with my mother, we told him exactly what supplements she was taking. It looked like he was considering what she was trying, but ultimately he was dismissive about it.

In my experience, doctors are often judgemental and dismissive of anything they can't exactly quantify. If it works for me, I want to be able to be a partner in my treatment. I need to be free to use treatments that work for ME. Whether or not they have the tools to study them or not.

4. Yes, that is so important.

Same thing happened with my mom though a little late - she didn't tell about the little extras that she was taking. When she fessed up, her doctor - thank goodness - was not dismissive, but threw most of the supplements away and explained why, kept one; adjusted and changed meds. But this man was so there for her and made her promise to tell him everything. And she does, thank goodness.

Thank you for posting this Kind of Blue. I found it helpful. I am currently looking for a health care provider who will be helpful, and not dismissive of my interest in more holistic healing methods. I am hesitant to discuss my interest in alternative healing methods with a physician because, the arrogance the Harvard expert displayed, is the norm in physicians I've known. "First do no harm " is important to me.

Try googling for a "holistic m.d." in your area--they are licensed medical doctors but also are well versed (and have degrees in) alternative healthcare methods.

You might also try the doc finder on the website of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (www.acam.org). They support integrative medicine, which uses the best of both alternative and conventional medicine.

I work directly with a couple of alternative docs, and they both recommend ACAM when people ask where to find physicians in their area.

I have almost quit the AMA medicine and am building my medicinal garden as we speak. My 2 things I always have in my medicine kit is Tea Tree Oil and Goldenseal Root Powder. I planted Goldenseal last year and it is coming up big time this year, by next, I should be able to cut some roots and dry and powder them.

I use tea tree oils in some of the facial toners I've made. How are you using it and the Goldenseal Root Powder? I've only grown Aloe Vera medicinally so far, But it has been amazingly beneficial on severe poison oak outbreaks. So I'm interested in expanding my garden to other useful plants. It gets kind of complicated though, with knowing how to grow a plant, the right time to harvest it, and how to prepare it for use.

I'd love to hear about more about your medicinal garden, when you have time to share. :hi:

11. IKWYM-- I see so many patients taking statins

that I pretty much have little trust in the MD's. They are good at what they do in that modern medicine game but if you don't want to play that game, just the "keeping good health" game, you may be at cross purposes.

I'm also working at "keeping good health" as you said. So if I can find a Physician who believes in "first do no harm", and "let your medicine be your food and your food be your medicine", I'm going to feel more comfortable following their advice. Dismissiveness is not something I'm willing to pay for anymore because my idea make sense. I don't know much about statins and their side effects.
