Cicadas, cicadas everywhere!!!
It's the 13 year cicadas bringing their own special melodic charms to the area. I love the sound, but some people are unnerved by it -- and them. They are unusual and slightly Sci-Fi looking, but again, I think they're pretty cool. Might as well think that, because they are EVERYWHERE and won't be going anyplace for at least a month or two. All of the trees on the property have those little cicada shells stuck to them, but not only trees: they're on the fence posts and the siding of the house. I even found one on the doghouse. A couple of my friends are freaked out by them. What's the point of that? Yes, they're big and freaky looking, but they don't bite or sting or eat your plants or NOTHING! They just sing for all I can tell.

So why am I rambling? No clue. Just felt like posting about cicada mania here in NC.

2. Aren't they cool?
I'm not too keen on cleaning up their little carcasses once they die off, but it's just nature. I wonder if we can toss them in the composter? Will have to check into that.

4. nothing says summer like the cicada

I may be in NJ, but when I hear the cicada, I am in a southern swamp with moss dripping off the trees.

I love the summer cicadas too.

But the ones out now only surface every 13 years (there are those that only surface every 17 years as as well). They look like this

Cool, eh? I'm really loving the pumpkin-orange eyes.

7. In Virginia,
We've had the 17 year Cicada, but it's not time for them to come back yet, but there are always a few that come out, like they were late bloomers or something. One year, they were so massively available everywhere, and we had a lot of the crunch, crunch, crunch sounds, But when they got to whirrrrring-whew- it sounded like an old 50's sci-fi movie!

8. YES!!! That's it exactly!!!
I couldn't quite place the sound, but that's it. It sounds like the noise the space ships make in those 50's sci fi movies. Thanks Kimmers.
