Interesting Mayan Calendar stuff from John Major Jenkins

I saw this guy speak at the Esoteric Book Conference in Seattle this year and found his research on the Mayan Calendar really interesting. His talk wasn't at all what I was afraid it would be - yet more New Age Apocalypse stuff. Instead it was a fascinating talk on his intelligent research into the astronomy of the Mayan Calendar. There's nothing 'end of the world' about it, he just takes a really good look at how the Mayans were measuring cycles of time and what astronomical event/cycle is occurring in 2012 and the mythology that it corresponds to. Worth the read if you are at all interested in the topic.

5. The way I look at this...

it's a study in the way the Mayans were thinking, their mythology, astronomy and so forth. I would look at it the way I'd look at any world mythology: What are the archetypal themes running through it? How does the mythology influence the descendants of the culture? What I wouldn't do is take as creed that it's some kind of inevitable, 'writ in stone' prophesy. ymmv...
