Tell them it's a dream sequence.
I really don't know what I'm trying to say in this post :D I don't know what conversation my husband and I were having tonight - one too many beers, I guess. But he told me of some filmmaker saying to another, "Tell them it's a dream sequence," in order to get cameramen to do what he wanted. I looked it up and found out that the quote is by none other than Orson Welles and it worked for the young filmmaker.

So I guess I'm thinking wouldn't it be cool to float right passed resistance for things we want to achieve, and let creativity and possibilities take over?

"...and continuity kept on telling me, 'You can't do that! It's not gonna cut!' And I kept trying to convince them that it would, and it got to the point where I became so frustrated, I went over to Orson, kvetched a bit and asked his advice. He told me, 'Tell them it's a dream sequence.' At first, I was confused because it wasn't a dream sequence, but he told me that if you told people you were shooting a dream sequence, they would put aside any resistance towards your wishes and that they would do whatever you want. So I went back and told the cameraman that it was a dream sequence we were shooting, and he told me, 'Well, why didn't you say so? I can put the camera over here and do all kinds of crazy things."

1. Awesome. Welles fixed our clock once. LOL
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 01:14 AM by Lucinda
I'm not sure what year it was, but he was on one of the daytime talk shows ( I want to say a Dinah Shore show, but I was young and don't remember for sure)and asked people to bring non-working electrical appliances to the same room the tv was in. Someone in the house grabbed an oooolllld mantel clock that hadn't worked in years. I don't remember what he did or said (although I have some vague recollection about pyramids and energy but that info may just be from hearing the story retold) anyway, I think he said to plug in the items and that they would start working within a certain amount of time. We did, and the clock did start working, so Orson Welles fixed our clock. :)

I've been looking for years to find someone else that saw the show or heard about it from a family member. Hadn't thought about this in quite a while. :)

Oh, back to your original point, lol, it definitely is a great example about finding new ways to look at resistance.

4. Hey that's a cool story, Lucinda!
I have fond memories of all those old daytime talk shows (my grandmother was particularly fond of watching Mike Douglas). Wish I'd seen that episode! :D

5. I wish I could find it again. I looked around a bit after your post, but no luck.
I caught a few segments from those days last night on youtube. I'm glad we still have those shows around. :)

7. OMG, that IS cool!!!
I just tried to Google and found one hit in which someone else recalled that episode, Lucinda. Nothing further though. This post is what comes up.

That's the kind of thing that would bug me nonstop and I'd be Googling for hours trying to find proof or a link to that episode...lol.

8. Oh wow...Which terms did you use do you remember?
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 08:15 AM by Lucinda
I got nothing when I searched. :( I'm glad someone else remembers it!
I did find a great clip where Welles discusses the relationship of performers and audience, which I passed on the my fellow theatre people on FB.

I have the same reaction when I want to research something. I dig in until I find it. :P But I haven't had any luck with this at all.

10. I found something at SNOPES but the timing is off
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 08:28 AM by Lucinda
According to a question posted at Snopes, someone mentioned it in the comment section of the biography magazine.

Ahhh....the timing is right...they just miscalculated and came up with the wrong year.

I'd love to find that issue of biography magazine. :)

They somehow came up with 1950 when they did the math...If they are using that date they will never find it! :) 2002-25 doesnt = 1950.

I'm so surprised that segment is not on the Internet - yet. I'd love to see it. My parents loved the Dinah Shore Show, couldn't say anything bad about her in our house - and Mike Douglas :)

2. Yes!!!
That's what you and I have been talking about when we talk about imagining "what if" and creating a new/different result, new scenario, new reality.

"Dreaming" it removes the logical barriers. That makes a lot of sense to approach it that way!

Dream your "what if?"!

17. I remember a co-worker
from years ago who use to say all the time when facing a work issue, "If I were clever, I'd..." And problem solved. He just swatted resistance so naturally. I wish I knew back then that's what he was doing.

Yes, what if I were clever? What would I do. It feels good :)

He's a great guy, but he always says, "I'm not too smart, so..." or "I can't communicate as well as So and So..." etc. I want to swat him! He's intelligent and has "a way" with people--very congenial and likable; how in the world can he keep tearing himself down like that? :banghead:

24. You know what's weird?
When I first met him (when I didn't know much about him), I thought he was an egotistical tool. It was because he was presenting himself in an awkward way--like, if he sent an e-mail about business, he'd phrase everything as "*I'm* going to...", "*I* will...", "*I* plan on..." all "I, I, I". Now that I know him a little better, I realize he doesn't mean it that way--he was just insecure and so overcompensated the other way. So much for first impressions, right? :P

I've spent some time day dreaming what it is like to be one of a certain Druid who honored dreams more than wakefulness.
All daily habits were approached in ways to enhance the dream state.

I don't remember much, but I know my dreams are fun. Is pretending I live there the same thing?

I'm so glad it resonates with you. Looking back on life, it does feel like one long memory or pieces of dreams. So why not treat today as part of a dream sequence that's full of possibilities and answers, just as dreaming state informs us all the time

I've even asked to remember them, and I don't.

31. I wonder if it's the insomnia
you wrote of a few months ago. I read somewhere that getting plenty of sleep is key, although when I started dreaming again it was after one of my short rounds of sleep. But I think it helps to kind of linger in bed for a few minutes, and let my mind wonder a little.

I just looked up remembering dreams and there are over 2 million results. I thought this site has some good information http://thedreamtribe.com/how-to-remember-your-dreams/ especially because 2 things I do unconsciously when I want to get back to a dream - assume the exact sleeping position and not getting out of bed right away. The same site also has some interesting ideas about why we don't remember http://thedreamtribe.com/why-we-forget-our-dreams-2/

Then I looked up if it is even necessary to remember them. I read one passage that said scientists were trying to connect REM stage dreaming to difficulty just remembering stuff. The article used an example of a man with brain injury who lost REM but was able to finish law school and has no problems in daily life.

There was one post about whether remembering dreams is necessary for Jungian analysis. the answer was: "...it is not necessary to remember your dreams to be in an Jungian Analysis or Jungian based psychotherapy. The unconscious reveals itself in many different ways including fantasies, day dreams, daily stories, creativity, synchronicities, and that narrative your life." So I'm thinking perhaps you get your dream on in other ways! :)

33. True dat! Yesterday I thought
I got some seriously bad news that I didn't want to investigate further. So I remembered this is a sequence in a dream and more sequences will follow. I am the cameraman. So I didn't resist the bad feeling - couldn't help it - but I also took a step I wouldn't have normally. I asked for more information and Lo! I wrongly interpreted the whole situation and it was excellent news instead. So I lost 1 hour of life feeling awful while resisting other interpretations and what I should have done in the first damn place

I'm definitely printing it up!
