White light, good vibes, whatever positive energy you've got requested
This is sort of urgent--not in the sense that someone ill needs this, but if you know anything about the theater or theater lore/traditions, it is highly urgent!

So far, the show I'm in has been having a great run. We opened on Wednesday to a huge audience & the whole cast was on fire. I've never experienced that before as an actor--the feeling was so overwhelming, a couple of the others & I were in tears when the show ended. Holy smokes. What an experience.

Well, apparently, this has made the TPTB in this organization a bit miffed. Our show has been the red-headed step-child for the longest time & they've given the director a ton of shit--mostly over casting me (because they wanted one of their BFFs to have my part, but she didn't work out because she wouldn't play the humor---he-LLO, it's a farce) & then have given me a ton of shit too because I'm "too young" to play the part & they cast "age-appropriate" or whatever; this has gone from being a minor irritant to an instant FOAD reaction from me btw, because every night at rehearsals, I was dragged off by someone not the director & told how lousy I was doing because I was just "too young." (I'm getting to it, I promise)

So, last night, before the show, when actors & crew were at 15 minutes, the "executive producer" (who cast himself & his wife as the leads in the next show) comes backstage & drops the "M" bomb within my hearing & several other people. (The "M" bomb is the name of the Scottish Play by Shakespeare; please don't ask me to say it now, after what happened last night, I'm not taking chances) I was stunned. Even though I didn't (to that point) really believe shit could happen if that word was said backstage, I did at least respect others who asked that it not be said in their presence. Our director is one of those people & he has been on pins & needles about this issue because that play is the next one this company is putting on.

SO ANYWAY, last night's show was almost a complete disaster. People missed entrances, I was trapped on stage with someone who can't ad lib to save his life, everyone went up on their lines at one point, & most importantly, one of the cast caught her foot on the stairs & almost fell down them onto the stage. !!!!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send any positive energy you can to the cast & crew, as well as the set & theater of "The Foreigner" to help clear out the negative vibes INTENTIONALLY SENT our way. I'm going to do a meditation on stage before the matinee today--not sure what time, probably around 12 noon Central time. We have performances today at 3 & 8, and one more tomorrow at 3, so if you can spare a few moments, send positive energy our way during those times (the show runs about 2h 15m btw).

I really appreciate all the support y'all have given me so far. Please help if you can!

I do not believe in the bad luck mojo from the word being uttered, but I DO believe crappy mean spirited energy can do harm.
It's good you are going in early. I'd also physically sweep the green room and stage if you can. ♥ And try getting calm and centered before you go into the building.

3. Well, we don't have a green room per se
but my character does use a broom as a prop, so I'll make use of it. Thanks!!!!! :yourock:

Other than petty bullshit like this, I'm having a great time.

17. I'm glad to hear its going well otherwise!
I always sweep the stage floor when I walk the stage prior to the audience coming in - if the set is my character's house. It's really grounding.

And in this case, your intention to clear the bad energy for the production has a lot of power, regardless of who's character is actually tied to the location. I'm really glad that you character already has a broom. That's perfect.

I am looking forward to hearing you had great shows today! ♥

5. What I've done so far
I did a short meditation already & put the theater, the cast & the crew in a globe of white light. No negative energy allowed!! I'm picturing the globe suspended on a string made of white light, which is pouring into it (looks like a crystal being held on a chain---the picture in my mind). Surrounding the globe is a shield of mirrors that reflect OUT---only positive energy is allowed in; negative energy is bounced off the mirrors & reflected back onto the person who sent it OR surrounded by white light & transformed into something positive (does this make sense?).

Thanks everyone! I'll check in again before I head out to the theater. :yourock:

6. What the EF!!!!!
That is SO UNCOOL. To say the least. That "executive asshole" should be ashamed of himself. You do NOT intentionally sabotage your own production because of one person's outsize ego. Theater is a team effort; a production is only as good as its weakest member. Therefore we must all bolster each other, not try to weaken a cast and crew. I cannot express how incredibly horrified and offended I am by this person's behavior. I must also refrain from wishing all sorts of plagues upon him. (Do no harm...do no harm...)

Sending you and the cast and crew much white light, WDG. You did the right thing, cleansing the theater. May I suggest doing a group vibe/circle before your productions to remove any fears/bad juju anyone has absorbed?

And, of course, don't forget the traditional ways of counteracting the curse:

Cleansing rituals

When the name of the play is spoken in a theatre, tradition requires the person who spoke it to leave, perform traditional cleansing rituals, and be invited back in. The rituals are supposed to ward off the evil that uttering the play's name is feared to bring on.

The rituals include turning three times, spitting over one's left shoulder, swearing, or reciting a line from another of Shakespeare's plays.<2> Popular lines for this purpose include, "Angels and ministers of grace defend us" (Hamlet 1.IV), "If we shadows have offended" (A Midsummer Night's Dream 5.ii), and "Fair thoughts and happy hours attend on you" (The Merchant of Venice, 3.IV).<2> A more elaborate cleansing ritual involves leaving the theatre, spinning around and brushing oneself off, and saying M (the name of the Scottish play) three times before entering again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scottish_Play#Cleansing_rituals

(I think I also read somewhere else on the Web about going outside and running around the theater three times--widdershins, I think--but I can't find it at the moment.)

Break many legs, WDG. We're with you in spirit. Let us know how it goes, okay?

10. Well, I told him to turn around three times
I also told the director about it (he was in the house & not backstage as he usually is), so I'll leave it to him to ban this person from backstage.

I'll say a few of those lines myself (writing them down now) while I sweep (physically or mentally) the stage this afternoon.

I couldn't believe it myself. Talk about putting the "little" into "little theater!"

7. Definitely sending, WDG!
I just wish there is a way for the cast to get together, hold hands and just wrap in each others energies, especially remembering the feeling of opening night. I feel like I'm with y'all now and doing just that, infusing the whole place with so much goodness that anything negative will run and hide

I just can't imagine you having to go through this. It just goes to show how far they will go, even when it hurts themselves. The good part is when you get through this, you'll be ready to take on anything! Wishing and praying the nightmare ends and they all grow up.

there's some great cleansing advice here...

16. Firstly...what an ASSHOLE. The "M" word is something you *never* say in a theater.
Edited on Sat Oct-22-11 04:52 PM by BlueIris
The one time I even got close to saying it in the courtyard outside a theater, a professor I was with totally freaked on me. That's basic theater etiquette right there, not saying it, and this so called producer totally poo-pooed on it.

Second, I'm not surprised the show went badly. I love The Scottish Play, but I have heavy respect for the long history of bad luck associated with it. Despite my personal love for the text, (it's my favorite stage play) even I have had major issues surround my life in the times I've gone to see it on stage and even during one or two re-readings of it. However, I think the bad energy is mostly from the negative crap directed at you by Mr. Bad Manners (who really needs to get over himself.)

Classic remedies for "The Curse of M" include turning around three times outside the theater and spitting, reciting three lines from Shakespeare outside same theater, OR (my favorite) thanking the ghost of William Shakespeare and asking for clemency.

I will do what I can to send positive vibes to you and your cast.

Today is our last performance!! Thank you all so much for your support, good vibes, positive energy!! I truly appreciate it.

Oh, the director did ban the executive producer from backstage. Ha Ha.
