A little more light for my mom, please?
My poor mom has been sick since June, the doctors can't find what's wrong with her and they keep giving her bs diagnoses. They've told her it must be gallstones (she doesn't have a gallbladder) or it's pancreatitis (but her amylase levels are normal). I think she has a non-H pylori duodenal ulcer and there's no money in treating it, so they aren't. She's been in pain for so long and has gone through so much crap, that's she's just about at her wit's end. :banghead:

It's like she's stuck in an episode of Mystery Diagnosis.

Thanks

5. I feel for you both. Sending Light.
BTW, I had something similar a few years ago; extreme pain and discomfort in my abdominal area; nausea and vomiting for no apparent reason, and periods of fever. They did all the tests they could think of and nothing came up. Another problem at the same time was mouth ulcers. In the end, it was apparent that it was another manifestation of my Crohn's disease, a new one. A couple of years later, I had ischemic colitis, where part of my large intestine was dying from lack of blood flow to the area. I was having serious bleeding at this point, and was very, very sick. Not to mention the pain. I was hospitalized and they gave me intravenous Cipro and Flagyl, and in a few days i was well enough to leave. It took me another year to recover from that bout - has she ever had something like ulcerative colitis or diverticulitis? If so, it could be Crohn's disease or something similar. I'm not sure what can be done for her medicinally - I drank a lot of Ginger tea at the time and that seemed to help, especially with the nausea. But mostly, I suffered through it. I would not have thought it was my Crohn's, because up to then my problems had mostly been lower GI.

One thing that might help is some low-dose steroid treatment for a short time, to lessen the effect. The problem with me is inflammation, and my antibodies go crazy. But you have to be very careful with steroids, and doctors are loath to prescribe it. She should try going to a naturopathic doctor. I've not been to one, but I've considered it, and I've had friends who did and were cured of their mysterious ailments.

Good luck and I'm sending light.

8. My mom is asymptomatic
except for some nausea (which seems to have subsided with proton pump inhibitors) and pain. She has no fever, no vomiting or diarrhea, her lab values are perfect except for elevated lipase, which can only indicate 7 things, the worst of which have been eliminated as possibilities.

We had already looked up all the possibilities you mentioned and none fit her symptoms. Really, I think it's just an ulcer or maybe an appendicitis that has not fully manifested.

And the stress of not getting the proper medical help isn't helping her. :(

7. Bless her heart.....
I'm so sorry to hear that it is ongoing -- it sounded hopeful that they were close to identifying the source of her pain when you last checked in.

:(

Huge hugs of healing and support for both you and your mom, Sweet Freedom.

14. She was without insurance until this month.
Her previous doctor wanted her to pay for an MRI, an ultrasound, a colonscopy and a GI endoscopy out of her own pocket. She paid for the ultrasound which ruled out any problems with her pancreas, liver, kidney and non-existent gallbladder. Now insured, she had a CT scan last week, so we are waiting for the results. (My mom doesn't want all that invasive stuff done to her when they haven't bothered to rule out the simpler, and more logical explanations.)
