Laid off, just in time for the holidays!
Still reeling from the news. and trying not to go to the place of anger, but still....

So the local indie paper here (monthly) I've been writing for regularly since June. The publisher, who i have known around town and thru the biz since my college days took me out to lunch about two months ago and told me he wanted to use me more, and that i was doing such a good job on the city/budget/layoff issues i could consider myself the 'city beat' reporter for him from now on...
well, the other stuff he wanted me to do was iffy, and he never followed thru because he is also in the process of moving into a new house and has a wife with some other issues too that he is trying to caretake...so i get it, he's overextended, etc.
I emailed him to touch base for the upcoming issue, and also to check if he'd cut me a check for this month's big stories...and he replied that he had paid the editor ( another friend who works for the paper) and he would pay me out of his check. well the editor and i are very close friends, and he said that's nits, cuz the check he got was really paltry...so he decides to try and squeeze another hundred out of the publisher if he can for me...
so the publisher tells the editor that he's not pulling his weight, and that he is supposed to be doing more, and that he can't afford to pay ME too...so that's it. I am out. funny how AFTER covering the big city story i get dropped, feeling very used. not to mention all the contacts i have cultivated over the past months...
I am trying to see it as just a money thing, but it still feels like i got screwed. Not to mention the fact that the editor had to tell me because i have not heard from the publisher himself...and the editor is coughing up cash out of his pocket to cover me for the week.

now i have to start looking for more work again, just in time for the holidays. This is a very limited market for me, because i can;t stand for long periods and do sales or ski lift or any of that 20 year old stuff... and all the reception/office jobs only pay $10/hr, and there's a huge competition because of the market now.
Last time i had to look for a job it took me seven months to get the one i have now - ten hours a week at a nonprofit, and while i am still keeping this one as long as i can, it's not sustainable.

:scared: I am trying not to freak out, but this is a very uneasy place to be in going into the new year...
(....if there's any astrological good news, i could sure use it!)

3. That is a major disturbance in the Force.
I've recently received a bunch of healing energy, so I'm channeling it along to you. May it serve your higher good as well.
:grouphug:

Kathleen asked me to pass this along too: In 1982 she had been looking for a job for 6 months. She had been lobbying for one particular job for a two or three months, and just before Christmas, when she had given up on it, she was hired into the best job of her life.

Manifesting a miracle is apparently a 4-step process - Visualization; Intention; Action; Grace. Stay positive and open, and don't dwell on what has gone before - the manifestation pot is never empty.

 from Kathleen

4. In tune with what GG is saying above
comes Dr. Wayne Dyer's Thanksgiving message about being grateful for everything in your life, even the downturns. Listening to him, he makes it sound so easy. Maybe it really is; I don't know, but his show is worth a listen. It's still within the one-week window after it aired last Monday, so you can listen on HayHouse Radio for free. Here's the description and link:

November 21, 2011: Dr. Dyer's Thanksgiving Message
Dr. Wayne Dyer shares his Thanksgiving thoughts and wishes on todays show. Dr. Dyer encourages listeners to be in a state of gratitude for everything that shows up in your life. Be thankful for the storms as well as the smooth sailing. What is the lesson or gift in what you are experiencing right now? Find your joy not in what's missing in your life but in how you can serve. Have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!

I was also wondering if you've ever self-published. I'm reading a great book on ePublishing on the Kindle (though I think there's a print-edition, too.) It's called All Smart Cookies Can Self-Publish (Guide to Independent Publishing) by Emily Hill. It's a great read so far, and I recommend it if you decide to write an eBook :)

I hope things turn around for you, FL

5. thanks guys
I posted from a very low vibrational place, i know. I have re-aligned myself and talked to my editor friend. He is also on the spiritual path and gets it big time. so we talked about the freakout/followed by the enlightening that comes from our hurdles and lapses...

He also reiterated it has NOTHING to do with ME, but all about the publisher having a major hit when he realized how bad the economic situation really is, but only after it hit HIM. (loss of advertisers because the local economy is shrinking, he hadn't noticed because he's so wrapped up in his houses and family stuff...) so we talked it thru and he is going to stand up to him with some compassion on monday and tell him that it wasn't cool to just sideswipe both of us like that...even if it doesn't change the outcome, it is worth saying because the publisher deserves to hear some of the lessons as well...

meanwhile, there are other options as well, i just need to heal and see what unfolds in the new year. I know i will have food, a roof over my head and a family that wont let me be desolate...so it's all in divine timing, i will wait on the tao, the will of heaven ;)

14. But ................
I have been DOING THAT for almost 3 years................And I don't have a whole lot to show for it. Since Halloween I have been hit with a series of "body blows",( financial) that make survival a really serious issue, forget about the life style I have thought would be mine! At this point I don't trust quantum physics.......???????

16. FWIW
This time on the planet is sucking for a lot of us right now. how can we begin to look for work in the system that's so old paradigm, when the system is so close to breaking down that any job we get is liable to be gone in months...?

I wonder if the reason so many of us have been 'released' from the jobs and lives we are so enmeshed in is to set us free to be able to do something different. Perhaps community/tribe is calling us to shift gears. I saw a great sign the other day... "lost my job, found an OCCUPATION"
it's something to consider. maybe not the protesting part as much as the community part.... you know what i mean?

 Hang in there, this is gonna be a bumpy ride!

Yes, I know, it's sucktacular. But for the record I think it's a good job.

12. I'm sorry for your troubles. I have no insight for the future.
I know you have really been struggling for a long time with this. I think you should continue with your contacts and keep up on what is going on in your town. You never know, you might be able to create something with the town government. I have a friend that put together a program (a recreational program) for the kids in the summer, the Town Supervisor picked it up. She is now part of the Parks & Rec staff and manages the senior center, planning their activities. Just an idea, Her job didn't exist before she started. So don't despair. I think the holding on to gratitude is very key.

17. Three years ago I was fired from
my legal secretary job. It was the Friday before Thanksgiving. At least they let me go about an hour and a half earlier than the normal leaving time, because I had to drive to Albuquerque (I live in Santa Fe) to pick up my car which had been rear-ended three weeks earlier. At least I could turn in the rental and pick up my car before everything closed.

That very evening my two sons were driving in from Kansas for the weekend, and at least I was going to see them. I tried briefly for a holiday job, but by then all of those were taken, so I took a deep breath and decided not to fret.

It can suck big time to lose a job. I don't know enough about your personal situation to offer realistic advice, but hang in there. One of the things I was told over and over again, by the four different temporary/placement agencies I was working with, was that if I had even basic bookkeeping skills, I'd get work. Advanced accounting? They'd place me in a heartbeat. Alas, I'm not even good at balancing my own checkbook.

The essential think that I learned from all of this is to be flexible. Don't get trapped in the "I can only do this" mindset. A phone conversation with a cousin who is a nurse on the east coast led me to check with the local hospital, and I got a job in outpatient registration. It's a job. Pays okay, considering what the job market is like these days. The benefits are very good.

I have no idea if that would work for you, but best of luck no matter what.
