job dilemma - any psychic vibes?

2 weeks ago I had a job interview. I had pretty much given up on getting it because it didn't look like they wanted to give me the money I wanted.

I received a phone call last night and they offered me the job at the pay I asked.

the big disadvantage is the commute - it's an hour 1 way, mostly highway - and we do get some good snow storms in the winter

the advantages - the money, they pay 100% of insurance (although that may change), profit-sharing and bonuses, sick/personal/holiday/vacation time (where I am now there is no sick/personal time), and other benefits I don't have at my current job.

this new place has been in business for over 30 years, the main offices are in New York, but where I'll be working is in Carbondale PA

I'm going on vacation from 6/30 - 7/10. The new place will be closed the week of 7/10-7/14 - so I have to call them back with my final decision on 7/17

The commute is my big concern, and my car is almost 10 years old and it's in fairly good shape (can't afford a new one at this point)

Where I'm working now doesn't look good for longevity - they keep cutting back on departments, and it's always a fight to hire someone out on the production floor. Overtime has been cut to zero. Rumor mill has it that the place will most likely close in 2-3 years. If it was a patient in a hospital - the company would be in ICU and the doctors would be wondering if there's a DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDER on file.

1. I have no psychic vibes, but it just seems like such a good opportunity...

that it would be difficult for me to pass up, personally. When you say that moving's not an option for the reason that you stated, unless your partner works in the oppositie direction, would it be possible to move a half an hour closer and both of you have a half an hour commute? (If he/she's commuting in the opposite direction, then that wouldn't solve the problem.) Does your partner really love his/her current job? Would he/she be willing to look for something in the other area if it turns out that this job really is as good as it seems.
I live in Pennsylvania, so I understand your trepidation about the weather and commuting for such a long distance. :scared:

In order to fully take advantage of this, you will also have to take measures to ensure your own well-being. Brainstorming about what those measures might be: IHAD's suggestion about an eventual mid-point sounds good to me. You might also bring your car to a good mechanic for a thorough going-over, some new tires, new belts, etc., to ensure it will run well for your two hour commuting. You can also plan to turn that commute into an enriching experience. Maybe books on tape from the library could help you to get some "reading" or learning done each day. Maybe treating yourself to some great music would help. I would also like to point out that your new employer must think highly of you if they met a price they originally thought too high. After proving your worth over the next months, you might be able to establish an emergency telecommute environment to deal with bad weather. I did that, and found that I got a LOT more work done at home than at work, and certainly was more focused by not having dealt with the distraction of battling the weather. Good luck with whatever direction you choose.

I don't think you mentioned that. Does it seem like the actual work is something you want to do?

Have you thought about moving half way in between your job and your partner's?

but I've decided not to take it.

the normal 1/2 hour commute home yesterday turned into 1-1/2 hours due to localized flooding/mudslides from all the rain. So I can just imagine what it will be like trying to do an hour commute in the winter during a snow storm, especially from where this job offer is located.

Telecommuting is not an option due to the specialized software they use and they do not have the capability of me logging onto their system from home.

When I lived in Massachusetts - I had a 2 hour commute (one way) and during the winter of 96-97 were were getting hit twice a week by major snowstorms in November-December, February-March. I would bring work on to do on those days, it worked ok for a short time, but then the head honchos started getting pissy about it. So I'm hesitant to put myself in that position again.

and then there's the gas prices. I did some calculations, figuring in the slight increase in pay, and what it would cost me in gas - best case scenario is that I break-even to what it costs me now, worst case I end up losing money.

moving is just not an option - the pay isn't significant enough of an increase to tempt us to sell our home and move somewhere closer.

.....boy, do I understand your reservations about the commuting!
My husband did this for so many years, and at the end of that period it was gruelling with the increased traffic and holdups.

9. just got back home

tried to make it to work this morning...

the back road I usually take is closed due to flooding and "possible" dam failure

the front way is closed due to flooding/mudslides

and the third route (much longer and roundabout) is closed in various spots

so I guess I'm home for a flood day. Unusual circumstances, but if you look at this in terms of winter weather, and if we have a winter like we did in 96-97 (2 storms a week) -- well, I don't think they will appreciate it

ennywhoo - the bottom of our driveway is washed out. Not too bad, but it makes a hellava bump getting out. There's enough stone/dirt washed onto the road to shovel it back in - so later today I'll pile it up until the rain stops and then use it for fill.

If it is a problem between now and then - I have some spruce logs that I can split and use that temporarily

10. I won't commute very far for a job

It's too stressful, and would be even more so under the conditions you describe.

Something else will turn up, radfringe You did the cost/benefit analysis and it didn't work out, so that is, as they say, the "bottom line."
