The most traumatic experiences effect our bodies the most. Our massage therapist has tales of his patients breaking down in tears occasionally when stored memories are released from muscles. One could do yoga or Tai Chi to address these things.
I do feel that events can be stored in the autonomic nervous system. There are all kinds of ways to address stored trauma energetically. One of the best and cheapest self help mechanisms is EFT--emotional freedom technique.
Here is a website with a lot of free information--
http://www.emofree.com/ I don't personally actually *love* this technique, but I am in the minority. In a general sense, stimulating acupoints while clearing a past event is a great idea, because it accesses the autonomic nervous system, and, yes, changes your response to the event. EMDR (desensitization using eye movement) is really popular for doing the same thing. We are actually programmed to release events during our dreams, and our eye movements. It is just that this system gets overwhelmed at times.
There are just a number of great techniques that can be used.
Good luck.
