ASTROLOGY TOPIC DISCUSSION: Topic 3 - The Planets
(NOTE: Many people who visit this forum will already be very familiar with this information. However, it's being included for those who have no astrological knowledge at this point and for those who wish to refresh their memories.)

In the earliest days of civilisation, when people first began to pay attention to the lights in the sky, they soon noticed that most of these lights seemed to hold their relative positions in a quite steadfast way. These they called the "fixed stars". Others, including the sun and the moon, seemed to follow a livelier, more random pattern. These they called "planets", or wanderers. In astrology, the planets, sun, moon and other movable points (such as the moon's nodes) are still all described as "planets", the wanderers of the zodiac.

Each planet symbolises particular sides of your character; for example, Mars stands for action and passion, Jupiter stands for fortune and higher thought and so on. Planets are located symbolically in the chart: the signs and houses filter their energies through the planets, much as a coloured lens filters the image thrown by a stage-light, or received by a camera.

(The above information was taken from http://www.astrologycom.com/planets.html)

The following link contains information about each planet, which you can access by clicking the planet name. Additionally, the symbols representing the planets and the astrological signs ruled by each planet are listed. (Please ignore the additional information at this time.)

Here's another site's take on this same issue:

1. Good stuff, IHAD! Another site I really like for learning the basics
is Bob Marks' site. It's nice because it has lessons for intermediate and semi-advanced students as well. I really love it when people are so generous with the rest of us. His stuff is really well-written and easy to understand. Enjoy!

3. And what about poor Pluto?
Edited on Sun Jan-14-07 09:16 PM by Rock_Garden
Pluto has always been called the "generational planet". It's so far out there that it takes forever to go around the Zodiac, so it's in essentially the same place for an entire generation. Come to think of it, I'm behind in my reading, and I don't know how astrologers are treating it, now. Well, I guess the fact that Pluto got "demoted" wouldn't affect astrology at all, would it?

7. Some of us thought it had a profound impact on astrology
others thought it had minimal impact.

There was a thread recently on the topic.

4. Just to clarify...
In this thread, are we discussing planetary positions (such as Sun in Gemini) or are we discussing the major aspects (such as Sun conjunct Mercury) or both? I'm guessing planetary positions, but just wanted to make sure.

6. Aspects should be down the road... a lot to learn first.

8. I really liked the descriptions
on this site:

http://www.thestarkeepers.com/poems/Part3.html

They catch the subtleties of the planets very nicely, I think.
