NOTE: If you don’t have your own astrological chart and you’d like to have it to reference throughout these discussions, you may go to a site such as www.astro.com to create it yourself. If you’re uncomfortable creating it yourself, I will create it for you if you PM me your date of birth, time of birth, and location of birth. If you don’t have your time of birth, a chart can still be created for you; it just won’t have as much detail as it would have if you knew your birth time.
You can find all of the previous 'ASTROLOGY TOPIC DISCUSSION' threads by doing a DU 'Subject only' field search for the phrase 'ASTROLOGY TOPIC DISCUSSION'.
The 4th astrological topic that we will discuss as part of our “ASTROLOGY TOPICS” threads series is the concept of the Sun in astrology. (We will not discuss here what it means for it to be located in any particular astrological House of the chart.)
I’m going to give some really basic information which is just to start the conversation. (Please note that I’m simply taking information from sites on the web, so I’m not an expert and can’t actually answer questions myself.)
The Zodiac is made up of 12 different Sun signs. Your date of birth determines which one you are. The signs of the Zodiac were discussed in Astrology Discussion Topic 2 at the link below, if you wish to refresh your memory:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=245&topic_id=34558&mesg_id=34558Here’s some information in reference to what the Sun represents in a chart: (Note that each is just one person's definition.)
The Sun represents the center from which your life energy flows, the creative energy that fuels your sense of purpose. Your Sun radiates out and illuminates all your other planets with light and energy.
If you fail to recognize and express your true self, then you may lose the balance between ego and the larger self. You may lose all enthusiasm; feeling stuck and without purpose; or stubborn pride and arrogance can move outward and distort all your other planetary energies.
The sign of your Sun describes the kind of creative energy you use to focus and center all your vital energies. The House position of your Sun describes the area of life experiences in which you shine with this focused energy, where you express your vitality, where you seek recognition and a sense of purpose.

Originally referred to as your star sign, your Sun sign represents the sign of the Zodiac that the Sun was in at the time of your birth. The Sun rules willpower and ego. It is the core of your potential and uniqueness as an individual; who you are and what you are about.
Your Sun sign represents the main direction and focus you want your life to take and your determination to accomplish what you set out to do. It represents your personal honesty and integrity, your ability to command respect and authority and your capacity to impress and influence others.
http://www.astrology.com/allaboutyou/sunsigns/index.htmlHere's a third person's take on the subject:
The Sun, the life-giving heart of our solar system, rules will and individuality. It is the core of your potential and uniqueness as an individual: who you are and what you are about. It represents the main direction and focus you want your life to take and your determination to accomplish what you set out to do.
The Sun's position in your horoscope demonstrates the depth of your personal honesty and integrity, the ability to command respect and authority, to impress and influence others. It indicates the stamp of your character, the deepest flavour of your individuality.
Your Sign (Sun Sign) is the Zodiac Sign that the Sun was in at the time and place that you were born. There are twelve Signs of the Zodiac and each Sign is made up of thirty degrees, making 360 degrees in the entire zodiac. The Sun travels about a degree a day and so gets right through the zodiac in a twelve month period.
Your Sun Sign stands for the complexion of your innermost soul-motivation in your journey through this life. How you express your Sun Sign through the levels of personality shown by the symbols of the Moon, Rising Sign, Planetary Ruler and other astrological factors determines your course in life and how you will deal with it. It is the mark of the innermost structure of your character and reveals the primary karmic shaping that you need to experience in this lifetime.
http://www.astrologycom.com/sun.html Apologies to anyone who I told that the next topic would be discussion of the individual houses. It was determined that some more background information is needed before we get to that point.
