Anyone here attend a Science of Mind church?
I've read the magazine on and off for years now, and love it--but I've been kind of dragging my feet on the church issue. Just wondered if others have attended and what your experience was like?

Anyone?

Thanks!

1. You're thinking of the Church of Religious Science...Science of Mind is
the theory of Ernst Holmes, their founder. This is a cool church: eclectic, cool, pro-peace and proud of it, interesting experiential exercises and such, and generally nice people. Worth a try.

Here's their home page. You can go local from here.

Peace!

3. There are two branches
The link you gave is for "United Church of Religious Science":
http://www.religiousscience.org

There's another branch called "Religious Science International":
http://www.rsintl.org/

Same philosophy, just different organizational structures. But if there isn't a nearby church of one group, there might be of the other.

I went to a UCoRS church for years before I moved. That was the last church I attended regularly.

It's a very positive thinking, uplifting church.

There's another group you might want to check out too, the International New Thought Alliance.
http://newthoughtalliance.org/
It's an umbrella organization that UCoRS, RSI, Unity, and several less well-known denominations belong to.

8. Welcome to DU!!!
Thanks for providing a more complete reply. I've found CRS to be a delightful and uplifting experience. First church I've been to where there is not a heavy duty emphasis on fund raising, althought the church I attend from time to time is doing just fine. Welcome!

2. I was in one Sunday night;
to attend the premier of Indigo. Their pastor speaks at local interfaith services; I've heard him a couple of times, and I know a few people who are members. I've never attended a service.

My experience listening at interfaith services was positive. The only way you'll know if it "fits" is to check it out!

4. Thank you for the links and feedback!
I used to attend one sporadically in my former community. It was ok. I attended one that is very popular with the celebs and people that live in LA, but the congregation was just way too big for my personal taste--and I didn't really 'click' with their services.

There's a couple of others not far from me that I'd like to check out! :)

May be one of the few places (as far as churches go) where one may not find many Repubs, 'eh? LOL!

5. Actually, you might be surprised...
where one may not find many Repubs, 'eh?

There's a significant strain of self-reliance in Religious Science, and the sane branch of Repubs can feel comfortable there. Wacko hate-mongering fundie zealots, no, but Goldwater Pubs, yes.

When I attended a CRS, it was 15-25 years ago in Orange County, CA--very politically conservative area. Things were not as polarized politically then as now, and I hardly knew the politics of anyone at the church, but there were definitely some Pubs as well as flaming liberals. The minister once remarked in a sermon that someone had scolded her over politics for seeming (to the scolder) to take the position of one party, but the truth was that she was of the party of the scolder. She never said which party, and I never could tell. Compassion, self-reliance, compassion, self-reliance... They don't have to be mutually exclusive or polarizing.

6. Good point
though I don't have as much of a problem with sane conservatives. It's the hateful, bigoted, racist ones that I do my best to steer clear of.

9. Nice to know that if it did, I (ironically) felt the
need to discuss spiritual matters! LOL!

I hadn't even noticed--how funny, and ironic. LOL!

10. ME. Me !
Have been going to Science of Mind/ also called Religious Science
for many years....I guess on and off for over 30 years. It's where I
first "got it".

"What you think is what you get"

A lot depends on the minister...it's supposed to be non sectarian - and I loved the first one I went to - the minister would bring in Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism...whatever....

but some are very christian oriented, although they're not supposed to be" religion" but spiriutal.

Their magazine is nice, but their Creative Thought booklet with affirmations every month is spectacular!

If you want to change your life into positive thought (and there is a good minister or teacher there) that's the place that can help you do it.

11. Hi Pallas! Thank you for sharing your experience--
I hope that I can find one like the first one you attended. I love it when they take a little bit from all. I really don't like to be reminded of Christianity a great deal.

I'll keep you guys posted on my quest to find a church community of this belief system that I click with.

Wish me well!

14. I'm in
chilly South East Florida. LOL

I had the nagging thought several years ago that I had to get out of the Northeast - that heating would become very expensive and that the vibes in the Northeast were very bad, so I moved to sunny South Florida....

but this winter is the coldest and longest we'e ever had since I've been here.

So that's where I am !

And you?

15. I'm so sorry that the winter's been so rough this year!
My heart went out to you guys this year--with all the storm reports. :(

I'm on the west coast, southern California to be specific--so I guess we are almost directly opposite one another in a way. LOL!
