Wow - did I ever have an AHA moment last night!
I went to a viewing of "The Secret". In the middle of the movie, I was thinking about what my big blockages to manifestation were.

Two big blockages for me are:

1. I have a lot invested emotionally in being the "long suffering martyr".

2. I have a judgement about the law of attraction and manifestation as being "hedonistic".

Is there any anti-catholic deprogramming that I can do, to undo the messages I received as a child in the Catholic Church?

:o

1. Anton LaVey style Satanism?
;-) or should i say  ?

i'm not seriously recommending that - *but* that was LaVey's main schtick - helping recovering catholics discard negative programming, mostly using 'shock and awe'. It's funny, just last night i was complaining to a friend about my inherent 'puritan work ethic' guilt complex that's been an issue recently and he jokingly suggested i become a satanist for a while :eyes: Last thing i expected out of the mouth of my friend. It made me laugh so i thought i'd pass it on...

2. Long suffering martyrdome is one of the primary themes of Christianity
as is human sacrifice. Sure there is redemption after the fact but does this belief system truly make you happy?

I know the answer to that silly and rhetorical question.

The hedonism meme really finds its roots in the myth of the original sin is sexual in nature and therefore your very incarnation is deemed to be sinful from your first breath. That relegates any latter physical gratification whatsoever into to the realm of naughtiness. It's all such bull.

So give all your money to the church so they can redecorate the Vatican and then you can go to heaven. Okay . . .?

Arghhhhh

The old "you wantta go to heaven. . ? then gimme 50 bucks" is the oldest tricks in the book.

Look, I've always seen every birth as a miracle and a blessing and if there even was an original sin, it's probably nothing more than impatience. I see more people getting into trouble through impatience than sexuality. Granted I don't hang out with a whole lot of sexual deviants or anything.

Why pray tell would your "creatrix" embue you with senses and sensuality the ability to feel if not to experience ecstatic pleasure and fulfillment and thereby raise your vibration and perhaps that of the planet ?

Look I've always attracted a lot of lapsed Catholic as clients for some strange reason.

Contact at any time.

Hope that helped a bit.

3. I share this block with you, KitchenWitch,
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 03:39 PM by DemExpat
so much so that I have not had the desire to return to this movie after watching the first half.....mind you, I have no problem with a life centered around simple hedonistic pleasures and loving contacts....but extravagant riches and materialism?

It really puts me off.

In my case it might just be that I am finishing my studies in International Development this year focusing on the increasing inequalities of our world - with all of the growing, mind-boggling global poverty created in large part (economically, politically and environmentally) by our (natural) greed in the developed world, I simply cannot stomach the focus on manifesting such riches.....

I know that this isn't being "spiritual" enough for The Secret, but this is where my focus is, understandably, now with finishing my studies!
And I do look forward to finishing in November so that I CAN turn more attention back from developing my intellect to my beloved spiritual themes.....

9. DemEx,
I think you might really get a lot out of the ebook I posted a link to in post #8. It may seem a tad 'out there' for you, but the section on Earth School is very enlightening when it comes to understanding how we are all moving through our different lessons on a global scale. Of course you may not agree with the presented assesment, but I find it rings very true for me personally and seems to make perfect sense in the way that I understand the spiritual matrix.
Maybe give it a peek and see?
I hope you can come to a place where the two things seem congruent for you...

4. Go to other sources about the Law of Attraction
I have the original DVD of The Secret. I also felt it emphasized the material aspects far too much and ignored the spiritual underpinnings of the Law of Attraction. I suggest that you read the book by the Hicks called "Ask and It is Given," to get a more spiritually based understanding of the Law of Attraction.
BTW, I'm a former Catholic too. As for undoing the messages we received as children, I think it's a long, slow process. When I was in my 20s, I never even thought that happiness was possible in life, never mind a goal to work toward.

5. You are the second person to suggest "Ask and It is Given"
Okay, I am manifesting that book.

6. If I haven't already,
make it three recommendations. I've never been out for money. Made sacrifices when my son was growing up so I could mostly stay around and raise him. I've been on my own for a long time. It can happen to any of us. We how iffy the economy is too. I'm not out to impress anyone, but I have desires and things I believe I am supposed to express and some of them need funding! The real law states that we are channels. The flow comes in and goes out. It isn't a one way street. How many people could you bless if you had some extra cash? Or time to volunteer? I have to believe Universe/Great Spirit cares that we have mocassins and a healthy bounty of all Gaia's gifts. Some people do just go for the money. James Ray points out that those people are not truly wealthy because the other areas of their lives lack meaning. If someone wants to use the attraction for hedonism, there is nothing to stop them.

I wonder if the martyr complex is partially due to being a woman. For reasons apparent.
It also, I suspect, is directly tied to how much we value ourselves as beings. If I am fully convinced of worth, why would I want to sacrifice myself?

My solution to the religion of my childhood was to walk away. I still bear scars.
But I keep working on it, or give up .. not sure of the final solution.

8. It's very good..
..although as I said in another thread; sometimes the way Abraham talks/writes/channels gets a bit 'thick' for me to read sometimes-but that's just me, really. It's good to read deeper into this..
and I would say also go read that book votes and I were talking about in the other thread-"No Time For Karma" http://www.notimeforkarma.com
There's a good view of the overall worldview and etc. there that always helps me understand why it's ok to use LOA in the scheme of things.

I can't read well onscreen if there are huge blocks of text.

11. You know, you can just change your mind. Really!
Walk away from it!!

Take a look at The Sedona Method thread if you haven't. I'm having some wonderful experiences with it, including coming to grips with one of my OWN major blocks which was purposely deciding, c. age 13, that since I wasn't born in a wealthy family (and apparently wasn't going to become wealthy, or even marry into wealth??????? boy I had a not very positive view of my future) and really, really, really wanted to have been (and craved really expensive things), that I'd become sorta anti-wealth. So I made wealth slightly bad and wrong in my mind -- *I* didn't want wealth, I was above that.

Shudder. I'm ready to let that go now. Sedona Method is a big help.

12. I just had an AHAH! moment myself regarding The Secret.
Just got the DVD, though I've had the book for awhile. And I was watching some of the folks from The Secret on Larry King Live tonight. Anyway, I was feeling kind of pissed off at this friend of mine, and then realized that I was working against myself. But what I really "got" at that moment was the reason that they emphasize being grateful! What I tend to do when I start having negative feelings is to try an ignore them, instead of just saying, okay, okay, I feel these negative feelings toward this person. Well, I know ignoring them doesn't help; ignoring is not the same as letting go. And thats when I thought about the whole thing about being grateful!

This may sound silly, but I think that gratitude, which a wonderful thing, I think it can also be hard to "get" why it's a good thing to practice. And, of course, it's a great way to change one's focus from the negative to the positive without ignoring or stuffing negative feelings; those feelings are merely transformed.

13. Boy did I need to hear that right now.
Ignoring negative feelings just helps me to stay stuck in negativity. If I do acknowledge that I do have the negative feelings, then shift to gratitude, I am able to get out of the negativity (at least that is how it works for me - embrace the shadow to let it go - so to speak).

14. Exactly.
I also wanted to add, for clarification, that my AHAH was really understanding, REALLY understanding, how gratitude works and benefits a person. Funny how something so simple can be so difficult to grasp, huh?

15. I can relate
I was raised Polish catholic and boy, do I feel guilty!

It was so wonderful to learn that I don't have to suffer to survive. That made a big difference to me.

I think that you've identified your own blocks is going to help you tremendously!
