some of it "congealed" to make what we consider tangible things in the "real" world.
The energy of different things -- and PEOPLE -- affects everything it comes in contact with and, in reality, all of the rest of creation.
The positive energy you used to feel in the store was due to the positive vibes of its proprietor and probably your own (and other customers') positive energetic expressions which impacted the store and everything in it.
You were quite right, I'm positive, in the "sadness" you were picking up. (Trust your own instincts and ability to "read" the energy. I'm quite certain you've properly identified it.) It may be that you're picking up HER energy upon leaving the store. And/or other customers' very sad energy upon finding her gone. And, of course, your own sadness -- heightened by the experience of the palpable "sad" energy already there.
Your husband's comment that the store doesn't have the same feeling is also likely true quite aside from all the sad energy. From your description, I'm sure the previous proprietor added quite a bit of positive energy, and enlivened the place with her own chi (qi). When she's gone -- and especially under such unahppy circumstances (i.e., not necessarily her own choosing or her going to something better) -- that positive energy is also withdrawn.
All of this is part and parcel of my understanding of the principles of Feng Shui as well as simply how the energy of the universe and everything in it works. We are chi (energy) sensing mechanisms. Someone upthread mentioned that we've all had the experience of walking into a room where "the tension was so thick I could cut it with a knife" -- we're picking up the "vibes" or energy or chi or qi of the place.
All humans, and in fact all sentient beings, can do that. (Animals are especially good at it.) Some of us pay attention and cultivate the skill, some try to shake or shrug it off. It's quite a aluable skill. It can let you know what people and circumstances and places are GOOD for you, and which are to be avoided -- sometimes urgently.
