Oil Pulling!

My brother in law is from India, where Oil Pulling is popular.

Is there anyone here who practices it? If so what is your experience? I'd love to hear it.

1. I'd never heard of it. I had to google to see what it was.

I'm curious to hear from anyone who has done this.

2. Yes.

I started about a year ago. I have had problems with my teeth most of my life and want to take care of the ones I have left (lost eight, if I recall correctly).

This, plus the regimen of Ivory soap as toothpaste, followed by brushing with Cepacol mouthwash, that I've been doing for three, maybe four years, has helped me a lot. I've got one tooth in particular that is loose and probably ready for pulling - but I've held onto it for a year because of the oil pulling. There's also something I can do with citric acid, to help the gums hold more tightly, but I've got to find the "recipe".

I do it when I take a shower each morning and use Sesame Oil (non-toasted). Some people use Olive and Coconut oils, too, and from what I've read, it has to be as unprocessed as possible. Sesame is what works best for me.

It does take some getting used to!

3. Any other beneficial side effects besides the oral hygiene issue?

Some folks report improvement in eye and skin conditions as well.

Thanks for posting. I can't imagine anything more harmless or cheaper to try. I just bought some sesame seed oil and I have it in the bathroom. I'll let everyone know if I notice anything in a month or so.

5. my update

I've been doing this one to two times a day for about ten days, and, although I feel the same, it has made an amazing difference in my gums. I no longer bleed when I floss--at all. This includes the place between two particular teeth that always bleeds when I floss. Anyway, this is coming from the person who always gets a lecture from the dental assistant. Ha! This is good. I use sesame oil that I got from the health food store.

6. Do your gums look healthier or feel firmer?

I think I'm going to try this, my gums are in rough shape.

7. they look much better

The one place that has bothered me for decades doesn't quite look normal yet, but it does look much better. I've gone on various dental health sprees in the past, and none have produced the results of this. It's kind of astounding. I was prepared for this to be a repeat of my past attempts, but that just isn't the case.
