Pluto in Capricorn Pt 1: 2008 ~ 2024 - Soul Making on Mother Earth
Pluto is the alchemist of the Soul.

This article is the first part of a
two-part article on Pluto’s entry
into Capricorn. The first article
provides a general overview of the
subject, while the second article
focuses on specific processes and
planetary alignments that will be
of use to anyone who is partici-
pating in the coming earth changes
and the process of soul making on
planet earth.
While this article stands on its
own, the reader will benefit from
two previous articles,Soul Making
and the Heart of the Galaxy
,
and Pluto in Sagittarius,
both available at
franciscaulfield.com/articles.html.

Pluto, the planet of soul making, having sojourned through fiery Sagittarius, the sign of the Centaur, symbolizing the vision quest for the past twelve years, enters Capricorn, the sign of the Goddess Gaia and Mother Earth, on January 25th. Pluto will spend four months in Capricorn before moving back into Sagittarius in middle of June. It will reenter Capricorn in late November where it will remain until 2024. While Pluto will be of great personal significance for all Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn planets, points and angles, it also exerts a powerful and life changing influence affecting everyone on the planet in one way or another.

Combining the symbolism of Sagittarius, the Archer, and Pluto, the alchemist of the Soul, one would hope that humanity and individual human beings, have learned its soul making lessons (Pluto), completed the Vision Quest (Sagittarius), and are now ready and capable of hitting the bull’s eye of truth with its arrows. Arrows are your thoughts, beliefs and intuitions. They symbolize how to reach targets and the goals that you have set for yourself. If not on the mark, you will more than likely rain down destruction or deception (Pluto) with arrows, thoughts and beliefs that fly off in any and all directions (Sagittarius), as has been the case, especially within the mass consciousness. For example, all the religious and sectarian wars and conflicts are an example of this.

In other words there is a big difference between Soul Vision (Pluto in Sagittarius) and what you believe to be true, the belief systems (also Sagittarius) that are dominated by the personality. By now we should at least know the difference, recognize our Soul’s Vision and the true visionaries from those who are lacking in Soul Truth. To not know the difference is to engage in and be trapped by destructive, unconscious behaviors.

Suffice to say that if we venture into the world with the intent on changing it according to our ideals (Sagittarius), we best come with our own medicine bag well stocked. It is all too easy to get caught up in the world mind and lose our way. Unless we have completed the tasks of Pluto in Sagittarius, i.e. acquiring our personal soul vision, better to take the time when Pluto revisits Sagittarius in mid June through late November to complete our vision quest and temporarily leave the task of building a new earth to those who have accomplished the Vision Quest and is a skilled archer.

It will become increasingly hard for anyone to participate in the world without having a personal soul vision for the future that one can align with in order to make a contribution to the world soul. Otherwise you run the risk of remaining in reactive mode at the mercy of destructive, personality (Pluto) forces unable to tap into the regenerative (the positive face of Pluto) forces of the Soul. Pluto destroys anything and everything that is outworn, corrupt, and personality driven so that the soul may come forth. It does this by drawing our disowned shadow energies in the form of people, circumstances or events wherein a power struggle is likely to take place. The end result is the recovery of our intrinsic Soul Power...cont'd

Pluto in Capricorn Pt 2

Let’s begin with a look at Saturn, the ruling planet of Capricorn. Saturn rules the life long process of becoming conscious and is the planet of reality. It represents structures, routines, discipline, and social roles (parents, authorities), everyday reality, your overall status in life. Saturn, known as Chronos in Roman myth, is karma, fate, destiny, and rules the process of time.

If Saturn is in bad shape in a natal chart then one is prone to fear, inhibitions, and unconscious behaviors that are tied to the past. Life is hard, depressing, burdensome and wearying. If you don’t handle Saturn issues well in your life, you get the booby prize. Ignorance reigns. Unfortunately this is the Saturn that the world mind and the majority of people are acquainted with. A good Saturn however is capable, highly functional, reliable, ages well, is the giver of a long and fruitful life. With conscious discipline we become disciples of life. In alchemy, Saturn transmutes the lead of ignorance into the gold of consciousness. Saturn then represents liberation. This is the Saturn as a valued teacher, well worth attaining.

Another appellation of Saturn is that of the dweller on the threshold. The first visible planet the soul encounters in its incarnational journey onto the earth is Saturn and the last visible planet the soul encounters when its sheds its mortal body is Saturn. It is a planet of supreme and utmost importance! Saturn rules over the earth plane and, along with the Moon, oversees the soul’s incarnational journey. Remember that the Capricorn/Cancer axis represents our ancestral inheritance. Cancer is the personal mother and Capricorn the impersonal or earth mother. Saturn as ruler of Capricorn is the ruler of the earth’s mysteries, a very important planet indeed!

With Pluto’s entry into Capricorn, Pluto comes under the aegis of Saturn. The rulers of a sign like the rulers of a country, kingdom, corporations, or households always determine outcomes of the affairs of that country. For instance, Bush and his cronies are according to most polls taking the country in the wrong direction. Many would prefer Al Gore as a leader as he is more in touch the reality of people’s lives and would lead them in a direction they would like to go. Bush is under the sway of a negative or debilitated Saturn while Gore has a prominent Saturn that is receiving a lot of valuable help. Bush, like his Saturn, is unconscious, alienated and tied to the past. Gore, as his Saturn indicates, is conscious, building a promising future with the help of others.

It would be constructive to understand Saturn so we can welcome and prepare for the coming earth changes in realistic way. As we have seen in the previous article with the sign of Capricorn and its having associations with Mother Earth and the oceanic mysteries of life, Saturn too has a deeper meaning. “The Roman feast of Saturnalia derived from the Egyptian and Persian traditions merged in ancient Rome, in a festival to the ancient god of seed-time, Saturn. <http://www.candlegrove.com/myth1.html> The people gave themselves up to wild joy. They feasted, they gave gifts, they decorated their homes with greenery. The usual order of the year was suspended: grudges and quarrels forgotten; wars interrupted or postponed. Businesses, courts, schools closed. Rich and poor were equal, slaves were served by their masters; children headed the family. Cross-dressing and masquerades, merriment of all kinds prevailed. A mock king -- the Lord of Misrule -- was crowned. Candles and lamps chased away the spirits of darkness.” ..cont'd

The ancient art of alchemy sought to transform base metals into gold. Yet for the gold to take form, all traces of the original substance must be lost. It is a transformation of the very molecular structure of the substance itself. We are so accustomed to thinking of death as the end of life that we need to re-orientate our mental perspectives in order to think of death as a necessary element of life — we need winter for spring to come, like we need plants and animals (and humans) to die to replenish the soil for new life to grow. Yet, when we experience loss of any sort, we often don’t think of the new life to come.

1. ah. Thank you for this so much Dover! I am in the midst of a transformation
I need to work more conciously with Pluto and it's dying and rebirthing in all it's icky and beautiful passionate glory. I feel like I am in a liminal moment and if I can keep on I will pass into a very different way of being. it is like I am a catepillar trying to decide to go into the cocoon afraid and at the same time eager to see what is going to come out.

3. Yes, that was kind of my experience with a previous Pluto transit...
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 02:12 AM by Dover
...that split between fear of 'death' in whatever form or area of life it comes, and a deeper
wisdom that recognizes and acknowledges and accepts some cyclical ending and the illusion and transitory nature of our material experience of reality. The soul knows its true source.

And of course the more conscious we are of that deeper wisdom that Pluto represents...the soul wisdom...the more willingly we become like midwives to our own death/rebirth experience.
Women understand the birthing part of this process and its natural stages more viscerally in the body than men, perhaps, and so might have a more innate capacity to breathe into the pain, so to speak, in order to bring something new to life. This might also be true of those who live closer to nature and her cycles.

However, as a society, we have not learned to midwife the death process quite so well and often
don't fully accept and willingly participate in the stages of the dying process and celebrate that passage with a similar joy and reverence. Life/death is circular rather than linear. And death, whether physical or nonphysical is always a spiritual and sacred part of life.

Perhaps the fear we associate and experience with death is due to our 'lost connection' to source. As we strengthen that connection and grow in consciousness the boundaries that seem to separate these places of transition will begin to dissolve making this circle whole again.

Pluto/soul connection, although Jeff Green has some wonderful books on the subject -
Vol. 1 - The Evolutionary Journey Of The Soul
Vol. 2 - The Soul's Evolution Through Relationships

I lived inside Vol. 1 during a difficult Pluto transit and though it didn't spare me pain and hardship, it awakened my receptivity to the voice of my soul and helped me to see and accept the process.
I also think practicing stillness and presence rather than anticipating things or getting too
much in one's head will strengthen one's connection to source which will in turn help tremendously
to respond to changes from a deep center rather than feeling the victim of circumstances and
thus reacting.

5. Thank you for the additional references, Dover.
The soul and karmic aspects are the things that I find most interesting in reference to astrology. I've heard really good things about Jeff Green's work, but I don't think that I've read any of his work.

I'm putting these two books at the top of my reading list; they're something to look forward to until my work situation goes back to normal. I'm sure that they'll help to prepare me for whatever comes my way over the next few years.

6. Something interesting about Pluto being in Capricorn now
got this in an email...

By Georgia Nicols

All Signs: Pluto takes 250 years to go through all 12 signs. Its movement is so slow we often don't notice it in our lives. (The U.S. presidential election was an exception.) This week, Pluto enters Capricorn, where it stays until 2025. Its last sojourn in Capricorn was from 1762 to 1779. Considering that Pluto rules nations and Capricorn rules governments, do you see any connection here? Europe, Canada and the United States all underwent huge shifts of power at that time. (Canada: 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham; France: 1789 Bastille Day; and the United States: 1776, the Declaration of Independence. Pluto has now returned to Capricorn for the first time since 1779. "Hi Honey, I'm home! Holy Mercator! Look what you did with the place!"

Never fear! Pluto has brought just the tool for this home makeover....
