What's My Name? - ASAH Tribe Naming Ceremony
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 01:39 AM by Dover

When Votesomemore posted the headsup about DU's 'name change' opportunity, I was reminded of just
how important a name is and the ancient Native American tradition...a naming ceremony.
The naming of Obama as our next president is a milestone for all of us as well. It's been a long and winding road, and we've all been through so much together and separately, experiencing important changes in our lives.

This is NOT an exercise to suggest a new DU name (although if anyone wishes to adopt one of the names given to them by changing their DU name, that's fine). This is simply a ceremonial and symbolic gesture to acknowledge and honor one another's journey as has been experienced within this cyber-community by GIVING one another names (as opposed to naming oneself).

So, here's one way to structure this:

Those who would like to be given a name by our fellow ASAH partcipants can enter their current DU name in all caps in a subject line below and our ASAH tribe can reply beneath it if they feel so moved. Also, if you would
like to nominate someone who's name has not already been entered, please do so using the same format.

If you are replying and 'giving' a name, enter just the name into your reply/subject line and then if you wish to explain why you chose that name for the person enter that in the text box. And just to keep things clearer visually DON'T capitalize your given name replies in the subject line. Just use normal upper and lower case.
What I'm shooting for is something that looks like this:

DOVER (all caps)
(reply subject line) __ Editsoooomuch
(text box)___________ "I chose the name 'Editsoooomuch' for you because I can always recognize your
posts by the red edit message at the top, and the many changes in text and imagery that take place as you craft your message right up until editing time expires. I almost chose the names "Needsdeadlinepressure" or "Justspititout!" but decided my first choice summed it up better" ;) . Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 12:23 AM by Dover

Humor is also welcome and of course even though this is modelled after a Native American ceremony, it's not important to draw on that source or name-format for your name offering. Also if you feel like someone's current name still strongly resonates and represents them, then you can either re-enter their name in your reply as the 'given' name, or simply not reply. Again...if you would like to provide an explanation for your name offering please put that in the text box. That way we'll be able to look at the thread and just see the original and given names at a glance. Feel free to offer more than one name for an individual if another one occurs to you to give.

I'm currently working on a project and can't stop right now to participate, but will join in tomorrow or the next day. Also will be bringing my computer in for some long overdue work tomorrow
(MERCURY RETROGRADE anyone?), but hope to get it back the same or next day. It took me an hour to
type this because some virus has a grip on my keyboard strokes!

Anyhoo....I think this is gonna be FUN!

------------------------------

For those who missed my initial post in the other thread, here is a brief explanation of the
Native American naming ceremony.

Native Americans Speak Out on Sacred Healing and Transformational Rituals

The Naming Ceremony

Legal names are given, but Native American names are earned. Gabriel Horn gives a personal account of why and how his Indian name was chosen: "By the time I graduated from college, I had already done my battles for the people. I had protested against stereotypes of Native Americans, I had fought for a Native American literature course on campus, and I had asked for participation in the United Nations. My immediate family believed that I had earned a name. The name came to my uncle, a traditional Cherokee man, who had a vision of a white deer coming to him and singing my name. He knew it was to be White Deer.

"My godmother, my uncle, and some close friends attended the ceremony. A pipe was filled with tobacco, and offered to each direction, as they called out my name. They called it out to the east, the south, the west, and the north. They called it out to the sky and to the earth. They called it out to the plants. They called it out to the animals. In other words, I was introduced to the universe as White Deer. That was my rebirth. In a sense, I was a born again Indian at that point." Receiving a new name was a healing experience. I was now completely comfortable with my Indian identity, whereas before I felt fragmented, not totally in touch with who I was."

Name changes can be physically as well as psychologically healing. Some time later, White Deer became ill, and a longer name was the solution: "I had gotten very sick, and was near death. A very old Ojibwa medicine man from Canada came down to Minnesota. I believe he was over 100 years old, and he didn’t speak any English. During the ceremony of healing for me, a manifestation appeared in the room. At that point, the medicine man said that the entity wanted me to also be called Autumn. I was now White Deer of Autumn. The ceremony ended, and my sickness was healed.

"The name, of course, bestows certain powers and responsibilities. The power of the deer is its awareness, its keenness, and its protective nature. The white is purity, purity of heart, mind, and words. Autumn, I was told, is a time when change is most visible. It’s a time when change is at its most powerful. And so, I was named for that season."

Indian names can be passed down, as western names often are. The distinction is that you are not stuck with one name all your life. This represents different beliefs about human potential, says White Deer of Autumn: "Crazy Horse passed on his name to his son, who took the name Worm as he got older. So, we can pass on names, too. The idea is that you’re not stuck with the name you were given at birth. In western society, it’s almost as if you can’t change; you can’t evolve; you can’t grow. From a native perspective, your name reflects who you are. White Deer of Autumn reflects what I’ve done. But as I go on in life, I may want to let go of that and take another name. I have that right. So, naming is the ability to evolve and change in your identity. I think this is healing, both physically and emotionally."

I think that you, on a conscious level, just want to live a normal, everyday, mundane life, but your soul won't let you. It knows how great you can be and won't let you take the easy way out. (I don't blame you at all for wanting to have some peace in the here and now...)

You have a beautiful soul that insists upon making itself known even if you'd rather it just back off sometimes.

It also captures what IHAD said about strength, for me.

If you could see me, I'm not sure you'd classify my as a svelte goddess any more, although perhaps in my youth...

Maybe I should start thinking of myself as a Celtic Goddess. I believe it would improve my whole attitude.

Thanks!

159. Good idea to identify with Celtic goddesses... :D
They are, IMO, some of the most kick-ass, self-identifying goddesses of any pantheon. They defy patriarchal boundaries and definitions. It is that foundation in Celtic culture that allows a woman like Boudicca, for instance, to actually exist in their history as a powerful leader. JMHO. ;)

Good to see you. I think drifter suggests aimlessness which doesn't feel like a good fit
to me.

This image/name came to me a couple of days ago and I accepted it when it came, but didn't know yet who it belonged to. Now it seems perfectly clear. There are so many things I love about this image for you, but most delightful is that with each 'skip' of the stone on it's journey, it's energetic impression upon the water sets off an entirely new pattern and direction which continues to ripple out after the stone itself finishes its course. And there is something magical in the fleeting interaction and animation of these elements - air, water, earth/stone, that also seem to fit.

I like it when people call me "Votes" Dunno why.

I'm waiting until the very end of the amnesty period, because I think I will have a little less time to spend with the unsightly appended sig line. Yes, call me vain. Leo, after all.

But, I really like Skipping Stone. Or could it be Stones? I spent lots of time growing up doing just that, and always love to see it, experience it. It feels like an experience rather than just an observation. Like the rock affects the ripples, so the ripples affect the air and all about, just as you describe. I do sometimes reflect on how I imagine people may have been changed by an encounter, as I have by knowing them, even if our contact was ever so fleeting.

Thanks so much. Give your computer guy a big :grouphug:

175. Nomad Butterfly
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 11:01 PM by MagickMuffin
This came to me earlier tonight.

It's kind of a take on Madam Butterfly but with a twist using Nomad instead of the Madam since you are a traveler/seeker. Also the butterfly represents rebirth, emerging from the chrysalis to fly away to freedom.

Anyway I thought I would offer it up to you. You've been given several special names. You'll have a hard time making a decision, but with a little meditation I'm sure whatever name you choose will suit you and you will be happy with it.

edit: typo for Chrysalis, I decided to check to see if I misspelled it and I did:blush: however when I googled it I came upon some interesting sites that refer to {{The teenage and young adult version of the Walk to Emmaus. A 4th day Christian renewal movement.}}

I remember you stating that you were going back to church and thought it interesting that there was a movement devoted to a renewal program called Chrysalis.

btw, while you are here, I was going to go back to your cleanse thread, but you'll see this before you might catch something added to an older thread ...

May I ask, how many lemons did you use per day? Did you use organic? My experience is the organics yield 2-3 times the amount of juice. Thanks!

184. MagicMuffin ..
I've been thinking about my above post, and it bothers me. I usually go out of my way to try not to *hurt* anyone's feelings. I tend to be very blunt, a double edged sword, and have found I don't even always know what might be hurtful to someone. In this case I had to weigh the possible benefits and/or damages to how much of myself I want to reveal. I have spent so much of my life trying to *be* someone I thought I *should* be. I'm too old and tired for that any more. I so hope I didn't offend you in any way. I genuinely appreciate your kindness.

186. No offense taken
It seems we have something in common, as I too come off as being to direct, but I sometimes don't know how to be more diplomatic. I guess that comes from my upbringing or perhaps being a Virgo:shrug:

Since you don't like to use the symbolism of butterflies, how do you feel about roses. Nomad Rose, could also serve the same purpose. The rose is highly regarded in some Esoteric circles, such as the Rosicrucian philosophy.

The Rosicrucian Rose: From Geheime Figuren der Rosenkreuzer

The rose is a yonic symbol associated with generation, fecundity, and purity. The fact that flowers blossom by unfolding has caused them to be chosen as symbolic of spiritual unfoldment. The red color of the rose refers to the blood of Christ, and the golden heart concealed within the midst of the flower corresponds to the spiritual gold concealed within the human nature. The number of its petals being ten is also a subtle reminder of the perfect Pythagorean number. The rose symbolizes the heart, and the heart has always been accepted by Christians as emblematic of the virtues of love and compassion, as well as of the nature of Christ—the personification of these virtues.

Maybe I'm just trying too hard to help with offering names.

As to the other thread about cleansing, I don't remember posting in it, perhaps someone else posted something about the lemons. Could you post the link, as I stated I don't remember.

189. Oh boy. Do I feel stupid.
 It was mysticalchick who posted about her cleanse. SO SOWWY! To you both.
It was a mistake made due to my laziness.
Egg, meet face.

I Love Roses, but not so sure I qualify to take such a name. Stone, rock-headed is so much closer to my true identity :D I'm leaning towards just keeping Votes, but will have some alone time between now and the deadline, when I can fully turn my attention to the decision. At least you are offering. That's the important thing.

I don't know where the directness comes from, exactly. I really appreciate directness in others. So, go right ahead as far as I'm concerned. I grew up in a family where I could pretty much say what was on my mind. Have my dad to thank for that.

I want to give some protracted thought to the issue of *names*. I know that's the purpose of this thread, but I've been somewhat distracted here in RL. Someone else posted about names she liked, and my RL name happened to be one of them. But, I've been going by a nic for 40 years. It's like I didn't want to bother people with having to use three syllables to address me. I never thought it was a particularly nice name, even though I like the meaning of it. One of my sisters once told me that it was too "sophisticated" for me. Directness runs in our family, plus she's a Sagittarius. This forum has helped me to cut her some slack for once, because she has come up with some doozies in our day. We don't even stay in touch. I've learned here that her BIG MOUTH is probably something she can't control much.

Rose... hmmm One of my favorite movies of all time was Gypsy Rose Lee with Natalie Wood, my favorite actress of all time. She's so beautiful.

Thanks, again.

You're right. And, how I've longed for a destination. I am my father's daughter, and he was never satisfied staying in one place. That made it tough being a kid going to school.

An interesting note to this theme.. there's a homeopathic remedy, Tuberculinum, made from dead tuberculinum bacillus. It's more than an average *remedy*, used to treat miasms, and therefore only available by Rx. My dad's mother's mother died from Tuberculosis when my grandmother was three. When my dad had TB skin tests, he always got a positive. Chest x-rays ruled it out, but there was something there. The roaming, never settled, behavior is associated with this remedy. Maybe since I'm back in this area for awhile, I will contact my practitioner about a possible Rx. I'm curious if it would change that tendency.

Of course that wouldn't change the fundamental truth that all life is a journey!

I could take the name I use most here at DU ... "Update Message"

In reading this, I think I have chosen "Sappoktek"...Choctaw for "my grandaughter" I am the granddaughter of Beulah Terrell, and seventh generation choctaw by her great grandfather in Amite Mississippi. This is my heritage, and I am embracing it for the next few years of my life. I am filing for official tribe registration, I am choosing to be noble and proud, and make my ancestors feel pride at the actions, Ideals, and choices I make from this moment onward.
I also want to remember that, as seventh generation, my actions and choices will affect MY granddaughters...

a-ho! *the talking stick is now passed*

Shallah - while I do LOVE the Changing Woman story and plan to work that medicine wheel majic into some of my meditations... it didn't resonate so much as a name, perhaps since it is a different tribe... :) thanks for the reference though!

OK, this name is just a 'nickname,' what some people call me in real life. I've never been all that satisfied with it as an online moniker, since it says little about me, who I am. However, I also realize that I post so rarely here that few (if any) of you may feel know me well enough to suggest anything else.

It's a fun idea, though, so thought I'd toss my name out there, too. :)

Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 05:33 PM by Joolz
I really would like to change this name. It's just not "me" any more, and is, truly, one reason why I don't post very often. If anyone gets any hits, please post them, K?

Stuff about me:

I'm 55. I am a grad student. My focus is on religion, myth, classical and medieval history, with an emphasis on myth, with world mythology at the heart, and Celtic myth and culture a major interest (from archaeology to historical documents to Irish & Welsh myths and legends to Arthurian literature), and all of this especially in relation to women. I have long silver hair and green eyes. I love animals, and have a menagerie of them (furry, feathered, and finned). I love to grow things and am an avid gardener. I read a lot (LOL). I love to write. I am spiritual but not religious, very eclectic in practice. I am a Capricorn sun with a Libra moon and Cancer rising.

Any hits? Thanks in advance. :)

I once wrote: "From my grandmothers, I learned that there’s nothing more enjoyable on a balmy spring day than sinking my hands in among fat worms and pale, new roots in the mucky dirt of my garden." So, you're hitting that aspect of me spot-on. ;)

SilverJade (silver hair/green eyes)

JadeMyst (green eyes/silver-misted hair)

Into the Mythic (sort of what I do? research-wise--sailing into mythic realms... and I love the song "Into the Mystic"... was played at my wedding by a friend)

SilverFire (the "fire" part would be in memory of my late brother, who was my online partner in many ways for many years)

MythDreamer (self-explanatory?)

Other ideas? I haven't ruled anything out... just still trying to spin new names...

112. Wow! I love that image! :D And it really is...
representative of me when I most happy. Very interesting... I am somewhat of an "earth momma," I suppose... I'm the one who, last summer, asked ASAH for energy to help me dig up and move a 30+ ft. long grapevine to my new home (creepy old landlord was gonna kill it!) in 100+ degree weather. And it lives. :) We did good. (I'm gonna post pics here for all those who helped when it leafs out again this spring.) Anyhow, yes, interesting... me and my gardens and my critters (yes, both wild and tame--in and out of the house), standing in the sun, hair flying free, and holding scrolls of knowledge. Yep. All the things that make me feel best. You and IHAD have hit both hit on this part of me really well, so perhaps that's the direction my new name should take. Thanks! I like the Gaia energy...

And yes, it's the goddess Cerridwyn (or Ceredwin--she has many spellings) who is keeper of the cauldron of knowledge (or sometimes, transformation or rebirth) in Celtic myth.

This idea came from Shallah's description of me standing in my gardens...

Silver = moonlit nights, starry skies, misty mountains, water, coolness, shimmer...

Gaia = sunny days, blue skies, green meadows/gardens/forests, earth, warmth, sparkle...

Just wondering what others think? If this doesn't work, I want to focus on that image some more maybe. Thanks so much for all the help.

51. MNTLEO Is My Native Name!
...well actually "Mountain Lion or Cougar" named in a cermony from a Colman Native woman friend during a vision quest. The Mountain Lion (I don't know why but I named Her 'Sheba') is my Ally and I now constantly feel her with me ~ when I was little I thought she was an angel even though I grew up in the woods and was taught mountain lions were dangerous and LOVED to eat little girls, lol. To be honest it was a surprise, I could not believe that a mountain lion would choose ME. A bunny maybe. Perhaps a little mouse... But I never expected a mountain lion! However I AM a LEO and my nickname has always been "Cat" soooo ... Now I am spending my life living up to her name, because I think her fierceness and courage was kinda of beaten out of me by Life.

So I do not want my name changed ~ I know it is my "soul name." However it was fun to write about why I choose that handle.

Love
Cat

61. LOL Well ...
...I have had that username in many places for eons ~ since the early '90's. When I first chose it however for the first ISP I signed up for (the old AO-Hell), someone else had the username without the 2, so I just chose the number 2 (since the number 1 was already taken, see?) and attached it and well, it has been there ever since. I have used it on almost every site I am on and nobody else has used it so it is a good way to help me remember as well if I am already signed up or not. So 2 is just a random number but ...it is now MY number, lol.

72. Wow ...yeah that is a good description because ...
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 11:53 AM by mntleo2
...after years of contemplating my own faith from being raised in the "good old time religion," to sharing spiritually with people of many faiths in an ashram (through my church), I began to see that the paths to God were many and that my childhood teachings were not completely true. I learned through observing the many good people I met there that there are many paths to God and it was important to listen deeply to my own prophet's teachings about this. He said on more than one occasion that often the ones who find the way to God were not the ones of his own faith. Then I could no longer blindly follow anything that the established Church said but to question and contemplate anything before I adopted it as my own. This has been a life's mission! What has resulted is that I now know that 'my' path is unique and that to listen to other sages was important as they also have hints as to what would enlighten me. I know best the Lights that illuminated me along the path were was the faith I was taught as a child, and probably it would be the major one I would stay on, it is true. But when the time came to find my own, it was important to temper that path with the teachings that resonated within me in my search for Truth with a capitol "T" no matter where that Truth appeared. I also believe I should question aloud the ones that appear to cause more misery ~ not only in myself, but also support those questions others ask in their own search. So often it means standing up to my own faith.

One way I did that was, in the several month's aftermath of 9/11 I wore a head scarf in solidarity with my Muslim sisters. I did this as well because there are ways if Islam I like and it deserved my respect ~ much to my surprise as I thought I was more "enlightened" when in fact I was not that enlightened, lol. Such as the separation of worship between men and women. When I spent my spiritual time exclusively with women, the relationship with God became much more ...feminine to me and I felt closer to God. I found that SO refreshing! Before I had experienced that, I thought the integration of men and women worshiping together created some sort of equality, when in fact our culture and the centuries before us far outweighs the "superiority" of men in so many ways it drowns out the unique yet important roles the sexes possess in our Human Story. I found also that the world of women is where I like to be ~ I like men too, but they are not of the same world as my sisters and I are ~ no matter what faith you profess. I quickly learned why these good women hid for weeks after the towers fell. While waiting for the bus, things were thrown at me, expletives yelled out car windows, I was stared at with hate for simply wearing that head scarf. I realized how brave these women are to even wear one ~ even now when the hatred has somewhat subsided. Their quiet intelligence and their power is evident, and I found that I liked the way they lived those things ~ I found that my own respect deepened for these brave women, it became much like my own prophet's love for women and it showed in his own choice why women were often the ones who were close to him because a quiet strength is often much stronger than a gun to your head especially if this love is deeply spiritual and steady and it does not waver even under great pressure.

I know it is popular to shout "Girl Power!" and all but it is just not as strong of a call to the feminine power of faith to me as when I laughed in the kitchen with other women as we prepared the dinner for breaking the fast during Ramadan, and it was the same sound of God with my mother, grandmother and all the sisters as we prepared Easter dinner, or when working together with other woman for a friend who was sick and needed our help. I found this was God speaking very deeply to me especially in these cases when I work with women.

However feminism was not the only ways I have come to question and temper my own faith. Justice for the poor, as you know is also a strong call inside me and it has not been a popular one in the world. For years, even though I did accept it when I could not put my finger on why it did not seem right, still parts of me bought the cadre that "you are on your own and poverty is all your fault..." I thought if I did not accept it I would not "own" my own choices, but this is not the case at all, of course I own my choices or I would never learn from them, sheesh!

Now I know that in fact poverty is an institutionalized, classist and racist issue. Now it burns within me to call for the end of that systemic way of disenfranchisement. Who cares for the poor? Even my own prophet has said, "The poor you will always have with you ..." (Mark 14, passage 7). But he was speaking in the context of a woman who brought an expensive jar of perfume and began to wash his feet with her hair and her tears mixed with it, she was so filled with love. The people who were with him disapproved of this woman's extravagance as they thought the price of that jar could have fed a whole lot of the poor for up to a year ~ and they had a very valid point. Jesus knew I think that poverty, which is an old problem because of the greed of some who have to have more than everyone else, was something that would take centuries to enlighten humanity about. Greed is the one thing that causes the most misery in this world and we still do not get what damage it does in this world when some have much and others have nothing. He told his friends that this woman did what she could out of her love (and I think 'love" is the key word here). What he was saying to me anyways was that the moment this woman was expressing her love would pass while there was a lot of time to feed the poor and poverty was *not* going to be eradicated any time soon. In other words (to me) it was the showing of love at that precise moment that was important ~ and you could show that same love anytime in many ways, and that it is the moment at hand you are given to show that love, which is the one you seize as often as possible. Especially when it comes to loving your neighbor as yourself and believing with your whole heart that when you work to eradicate poverty and have the faith that someday it will be eradicated with the enlightenment of people, this is certainly a way to "anoint the feet" of the world as well.

Just some thoughts and I am deeply grateful for the new name. I humbly accept it with a great deal of thankfulness...

Love
Cat

Shallah was my name in the best past life I have yet to recall so I don't want to change it but maybe add to it. In the past on sites and email accounts where Shallah is already taken I would add a K, making ShallahK, for Kali who is my spiritual mother. She kept making her presence known to me for nearly a year before I accepted that I wasn't imaging things and for some reason a Hindu deity wanted to adopt me who is of northern european decent and very grateful to not have genetically derived longings for dishes such as haggis and lutefisk.

So what do all of ya'll think of me changing to Shallah Kali?

140. It was the name of a company we were trying to start
Basically we would go searching out acres of land, taking pictures and video. One of the members (who was selling mobile homes at the time) of our scouting expeditions would get plats/plots of the land and we would over lay that with topographical maps. The idea was to provide potential customers with info about the land that they might be purchasing without having to do it themselves. We were also going to have a website where we would put up the pics and videos of the land. We were also thinking about buying the land ourselves and subdividing it to make money, even tho none of us had any money to use. We did purchase several acres and we eventually sold it but we didn't really make a profit from it, I don't think we broke even on that deal.

This was back in '99 and 2000, then GW came along and really messed things up.

It was great fun exploring acres upon acres of land. From the road the land didn't seem very interesting, but as we started exploring we found a lot of interesting details about the lay of the land.

Hence the name LandScouts was born out of that.

Hey, Everybody!
I'd like to introduce myself as Kind of Blue, after my favorite album of all - Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, that's seen me through life's ups and downs. And, indeed, my favorite color is blue; all kinds of blue from midnight blue to sky blue, to any other color mixes (including the delightful periwinkle). Plus, blue is our party's color, as well as the Union Army's during the Civil War. Blue is inclusive - blue collar or blue blood. And being a Trekkie and trained in the sciences, blue is the color of medical/science officers on the Federation star ships. I know the color is associated with boys but it was once the color for girls, as being closer to heaven and higher ideals. And, of course, our pale blue planet in space.
My sign, Taurus, rules the throat and neck and from Wikipedia, "In Hinduism, Blue is used to symbolically represent the fifth, throat chakra (Vishuddha)."

I can go on and on, so I'll stop. But in the meantime, if you feel so inclined, please enjoy some of the music from Kind of Blue

the name Starling came up. I didn't immediately connect it with the bird by that name.
But today when I got my computer up and running I googled starling and was stunned...or perhaps 'startled' is a more fitting description...to find this shimmering iridescent blue bird which seemed cloaked in stars. I fell in love with it!

And THAT, little darlin', is the story of Starling. ;)

What I've seen from your posts is that you are someone who supports others, and I sense a sweetness about you. I think that you are probably a very strong person in the sense of having a true sense of yourself and having enough energy left over to be able to be there for others when they need you. At least that's the feel that I've gotten of you through your posts: a truly nice, caring and compassionate person.

Actually, I have my name for you, and it's the opposite of Lilith (sorry): White Tara

In reference to Lilith, you don't seem as though you have a dark (by dark, I don't mean negative) energy, which is what I equate with Lilith. Perhaps my perceptions of you are wrong?

but I got the following for you:

Divine Idylle

The French singer Vanessa Paradis has an album out with this name (and there's a song with that name on the album). Idyll (English translation) has many meanings, but one of them is the following:

A composition, usually instrumental, of a pastoral or sentimental character, e.g. Siegfried Idyll by Richard Wagner.

This is what he said:

I assume you do know what Divine means.

Idylle is a short poem or song… Usually about love but it can be anything else… It can also mean “innocent love” or “perfect love” … “utopie” in a sense.

innocent love is something I've been trying to recover or rediscover or something

I am afraid that I missed an opportunity to take a leap of faith and make three people very happy
(one of them being myself)
for a lack of innocent love

or maybe I avoided getting myself in to something WAY over my head

I don't know and it hurts

but in either case,
I do wish to cultivate that
innocent love
the world could use a lot more of it

130. Hi Crab Nebula
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 04:36 AM by Dover

Beautiful Imperfection came to me intuitively but I'm sure this was influenced by my reading of a dream you recently posted (about the fish out of water). At the time of your post I had written a long response about that dream, but because of computer problems I lost it before I could post it in your thread.
When that happens I often feel that, for whatever reason, the message was not meant to be sent at that time or at all. And so I did not rewrite my response. But the essence of my feelings about that dream was that you were the instruments (guitars)...both the high end model and the one you determined was of a lesser quality. In fact it's a wonderfully symbolic image... we are all instruments perfecting our sound, song, message, divine purpose...and the means to share it with others.

I can't recall now all my thoughts about that dream, but do recall sensing a tension between perfecting yourself (being perfect which focuses on the END result) and unconditionally loving yourself and others for who you/they are right now (embracing the process and the moment as inherently 'perfect'), and also recognizing that the negative critical thoughts/judgements come from within yourself rather than from without.

As for MoonInTune, that has to do with balancing or 'tuning' the moon energy. Astrologically the
moon (ruler of Cancer) has to do with our ancestral roots, our family, our home, the past, the receptive, intuitive feminine part of our natures, our feeling expression and dreams, the actual and archetypal mother and our sense of security within and without. Not sure why that came to me, but there it is.

And String Theory is just a fun play on words, alluding again to your instrument but also the holistic, symphonic and multidimenional universe explored in String Theory.

At first I wasn't going to take part in this, because I like my DU name. I think I was the first person on DU to take a name with Liberal in it, at a time when the rethugs were trying to make it a dirty word. It's great seeing how many others have done this.

Esto is short for Estonian, which is my heritage. My parents came here from Estonia (after several years in a refugee camp) in 1949. I was born in the U.S. and spoke only Estonian before learning English in grade school. I've been passionately interested in wildflowers since I was 7 or 8 One of the people I admire is Luther Burbank, the plant scientist, with whom I share a March 7 birthday and Unitarian-Universalism. I'm Wiccan and try to practice the Estonian native religion known as Maa-Usk (Earth-Faith).

I'd love to see if the wisepeople in this forum can find me a name to use among ourselves here in ASAH.

blessings to all of you.

But a few others I love that tie to your native roots are:

204. Are you an Esto too, Dover?
If not, how did you discover this rather obscure information? I didn't think anyone on DU would know much about Estonia, so your post fascinates me.

BlueCornFlower translates as SiniRukiLill
Sacred Grove as Hiis
WildOrchid as MetsOrhidee

The ASAH name IHaveADream / FirstLight gave me, NatureSpirit, translates as Haldjas -- HULLd-yuss, which also happens to be the name of a major journal of folklore published in Estonia.

Thank you!

211. I got some help from the google gods
...for whom nothing is too obscure! lol! ;)

What you shared about your heritage fascinated me because it WAS unknown/obscure and peaked my
curiosity. I'm so glad you shared it! Oh how I wish I could hear your pronunciation
of the various names in your native tongue. They look deliciously lyrical and old world
in writing. Reading about that region of the world conjured up bucolic fields of wild
flowers, wetlands, cliffs and ancient oak groves. Have you visited your native land?

At any rate, with all those ancient and living spirits, it did seem so appropriate to draw from that rich Estonian source for your ASAH tribal name that reveals more of your wiccan/Maa-Usk roots than the Esto-reference in your current DU name. I hope you'll share more about it's influence in your life, and the stories and myths that live on in you.

I would imagine you are familiar with Eesti Mütoloogia" ( "Estonian Mythology") by M. J. Eisen, 1920.

I had fun learning about some of them, and I particularly liked this one:
Valge Laev (The White Ship) - a mythical ship that brings freedom or takes people away to a better land.
http://scyldingsinthemeadhall.blogspot.com/2007/07/finno-urgic-mythology.html
http://www.book-of-thoth.com/thebook/index.php?title=Estonian_mythology&printable=yes

And I just love the sound of "Linnutee".
The world of the Estonians’ ancestors turned around a pillar or a tree, to which the skies were nailed with North Star. Milky Way (Linnutee or Birds' Way in Estonian) was a branch of the World Tree (Ilmapuu) or the way by which birds moved (and took the souls of the deceased to the other world). These myths were based on animistic beliefs. The North Star is a title of the star best suited for navigation northwards. ... The Milky Way (a translation of the Latin Via Lactea, in turn derived from the Greek Γαλαξίας (Galaxias), sometimes referred to simply as the Galaxy), is a barred spiral galaxy of the Local Group.

216. Yes, I went there a few years ago
I'll tell you a bit, Dover, since you seem interested.

My only aunt and my two first cousins live there. My male cousin Arno and his family live in the capital, Tallinn, while my aunt lives with Cousin Anne (pronounced Un-neh) and her husband and three kids about an hour away in the small town of Rapla. The old section of Tallinn is picturesque, with medieval buildings such as centuries-old guild halls, and cobblestoned streets. In the summer the main plaza is surrounded by outdoor cafes. It only gets dark for a couple of hours around midsummer, so people are up very late, talking and drinking.

My cousins and Arno's wife Anu (Ah-noo) drove me all over the place -- to my father's home town of Valga on the Latvian border, and to the old university town of Tartu, where both my parents studied law until the war ended their educations. One of my great-grandfathers was a theology professor there. They took me by ferry to the beautiful island of Saaremaa for a few days. We saw the perfectly round lake left by the Kaali meteor in prehistoric times, and visited the old town of Kuressaare, where there is a castle that once belonged to a bishop.

Estonian is almost totally flat, except for some minor hills in the Southeast, and the cliffs by Tallinn. Some of the land is very swampy. The wildflowers are gorgeous, especially the blue fields of viper's bugloss. My cousin Anne is as interested in flowers and herbal medicine as I am, and we constantly demanded that her husband stop the car so we could run out into the meadows with our plant field guides. She taught me the use of meadowsweet for fevers and tummyaches, and hawthorn leaf and twig tea for the heart, among other things. She told me our mutual grandfather, a surgeon for the railways, was a herb doctor widely sought after in his community. Grandfather Karl was also a pagan, part of a revival of worship of the god Taara (usually linked with Thor) in the early 1900s. It was nice to know that my pagan tendencies and interest in plants was a family heritage.

I'd love to go back, but there is the little issue of money for plane fare.

Yes, the White Ship story is familiar. Basically someone named Maltsvets prophesied that a white ship would come to rescue people from serfdom and oppression. His followers camped by the shore waiting, but the ship never came.

Linnutee (Linn-oo-TAY)was the name of my Estonian girl scout troop in northern NJ when I was a kid. It means "Birds' Road".

I have written a childrens' book for kids around ages 8-11, based on Estonian legends and fairy tales. So far it's been rejected by 5 literary agents. I'm trying to work up the nerve to send it to more agents.

Whew, I hope that I haven't bored you with all this stuff, Dover.

People who hear Estonians speaking have sometimes said it sounds like the singing of birds. My cousin Anne and her family sound wonderfully melodious when they speak.

Here's a link to a website about the Estonian Native Religion (Maa-Usk or Earth-Faith) in English. Many Estonians are at least somewhat pagan. Christianity was forced upon them and they never really took to it. The Maa-Usk folks are struggling to preserve ancient sacred sites. Their beliefs have some similarity to some Native American beliefs. The earth is sacred, and every living thing, as well as inanimate objects like streams and stones, each have their own spirits.

http://maavald.ee/eng/

Any questions, just ask and I will try to answer them.

Earth blessings to you and everyone on ASAH!
LE

It sounds like such a rich culture and beautiful land. Thanks so much for sharing it with

Photos too!

I hope you're able to return. Perhaps your book would do well there. Estonia herself certainly

I expect I'll keep the name because I've used it here for so long. I have memories of Kephra hugging me on my front steps calling me davsand, and so I remained to him every time we were together in flesh. Sounds kinda corny, maybe, but I miss him still (he would have loved this group, BTW.)

97. Astrea, Goddess of Justice
One of the most well respected and highly esteemed goddesses of the Greek and Roman world was Astrea. Astrea is the goddess of justice. She stands proud with a stern look upon her once joyful face, as she holds a sword in one hand and the scales of justice in the other hand. She is judgement and justice, and she is purity.

the etymology of the words suggests, I'm thinking, that they probably aren't associated, since one is rooted in Greek/Latin (Astrea) and the other (Eostre) in Germanic language. They serve different purposes in their respective pantheons as well. JMHO.

I am flattered by your suggestion.

I deal with laws and the compiled statutes ALL day long in my day job. I dunno if I've mentioned it before, but it catches me by surprise to see that particular goddess come up. Similarly I am charged (and in fact oath bound) to render judgments according to those laws.

Again, I thank you. I have a few days left to consider a change, and I will think about it.

115. Hello ASAH tribe! Wow, these names are wonderful!
I just got my computer back today (it was almost fatal according to my repair guy), and am sorry to have missed so much of the naming ceremony. I'd like to post some of the name offerings that came to me this past week (and at the oddest times!) and add some more later. Unfortunately I am also up to my eyeballs in a project right now (had to wait for my computer) so don't know if I should just wait until I have time to explain each one, or just blurt them out and explain later when I have more time. I think I'll just blurt them out and hope that they speak for themselves, but will try to get back asap to either explain more or respond to comments. Anyway, glad to be back even if briefly :hi:

I'm not always successful, but it's part of my dream -- a world filled with a love that transforms; a love that is a catalyst that helps others to become the best that they can be.

same line. That part of you is the part that most stands out to me. However, my name for you would be a bit different. It would be:

Healing Love

I think that you have a love that allows others to heal beyond the physical. Also, I sense that the ego is not in control of your life, which is quite rare, in my opinion. You also have the gift of healing, from what I sense. This healing energy was palpable to me when you coordinated the prayer thread.

A little private ritual to begin the day (mirror optional...lol!). Very freeing...empowering...
Perhaps the Scorpio side of you might take the dare to be bare...one day.

The reason I chose 'listening heart' was that one of the ways you demonstrate your love for others is by hearing them...with your heart.

Truly being seen and heard by another is, imo, the highest form of love. A penetrating soul recognition that sees through the personality.

You do that beautifully.

A feather image came to mind for you Stella. I thought of the myths where feathers fell to Earth (Myth of Pegasus, for instance), and it seems that like a divine feather you have fallen to Earth to tickle us and to help us to rediscover a lightness of being and a perspective on our own humanity that only humor can give.

A Strange Feather

All
The craziness,
All the empty plots,
All the ghosts and fears,

All the grudges and sorrows have
Now
Passed.

I must have inhaled
A strange
Feather

That finally

Fell

Hi Lilith. Welcome to ASAH!

While I know little about you, I was moved by your story of the Ravens and
felt it was indeed an omen and that these spiritual 'messengers' speak to you, or perhaps you
feel a natural affinity with them. At any rate, this name came to me as I think you are a

would be a name that is inherently funny, denoting the presence of a substitute teacher, but might get you mistaken for a guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

Yes, I feel a natural affinity for corvids of all sorts. I can even imitate them pretty well, which seems to amuse them. From about 2005 until last night, half of them had been infected by the virus and lost their voices, so that 'caw' came out sounding like 'quack.'

I suppose that's kind of funny, in a darkly humorous sort of way.

To share some honesty here, I'm not really a believer type, I'm just a skeptic who has experienced some profoundly weird things. I have no tribe, and have gotten used to that, but figured there's no harm in bidding hello to this one. :hi:

This tribe is fairly wide open to anyone whose intent is pure. Your name has a special place for me because of the support you lent me a couple years back. I never forget a good deed.

200. Hiya, votes!
Yeah, half the Lounge still hates me for that. Not like I give a damn, I'll take both katanas to any sacred cow just on principle, let alone one that has stomped on people I care about.

Good seeing you too.

Lounge if I have a specific question that doesn't fit any other forums. It's hidden on my Latest page. So, if I run into a ruckus there, it wasn't with forethought or intention. I've never been interested in belonging to any cliques. The Lounge strikes me as being that way. If your fan club dwindled there, I'm sorry. However, maybe not such a bad thing. Who wants friends that only like you when you agree. It can be lonely, but my independent streak is unstoppable.
I feel that kindred with you and others of similar, dare I say, *maverick-ness*. :D That's enough.

.. I started to say .. "lonely, but with my freedom agenda", which I then thought might make a good DU name. Unfortunately, google informs me that the conservatives took that phrase to describe their 'war without end' agenda. :(

208. The Lounge hasn't been worth a damn since they banned sex threads
Ever since the drama that caused that rule, it's been too much drama and not enough comedy. No big loss there.

I'd rather play the dozens in GD:P then deal with the passive-aggressive Lounge clique bullshit any day of the week. But it can be somewhat useful for general personal questions.

194. I had a name come to me, but don't know who it belongs to.
The other day, a few names surfaced rapidly, one after the other and it seemed to be my task to
find out who they 'belonged' to here. I feel I've found the owners of all but one and wonder if
anyone feels a particular resonance with it and would like to claim it.

"BlackWhole"- The energy is profoundly deep, unbounded, paradoxical, mysterious, ancient.
In fact words fail me to describe all the feelings that came along with this one so I'll
resort to imagery.

202. If I were to take a new name I think I would go with Astra*Luna
I know this thread was for others to pick a name for me, but so far there has only been one offered. So, I thought perhaps I would just choose my own name and post it here and why I picked it.
It is mainly in honor our our beloved kitty Astra*Luna, Astra is what we called her, but on occasion I would refer to her by her full name.

That was the name we gave our first kitty my hubby found at the lake while I was at work. She was an indoor/outdoor kitty with gray fur and small specs of tan and brown. We think she might have been ran over. We buried her under an Elm tree in our front yard.

I asked the Cosmo for her to return to us. One day while hubby and I were at lunch (at Forest Park) and after several days of heavy rain, we heard a teeny tiny meow, I shouted out "Astra" and we found her hiding in some bushes. She was only a few weeks old. We took her back to finish our day of work, then homeward bound. I let her out one day and she walked down the porch and right over to the Elm tree and walked around in circles where the 1st Astra was buried while meowing. I knew the for sure it was my Astra*Luna.

We used to lay on the bed and watch the birds through the windows. She loved birds. I rescued one that had fallen out of it's nest and Astra would rub her face on it. Unfortunately, the bird didn't survive before I got a chance to take it to a sanctuary.

She got pregnant and had 3 kittens. I had scheduled the 3 boys (Simba another kitty we rescued from the middle of the street he had been hurt, possibly thrown from a moving car, in the wee hours of the morning; Francois and Renoir brothers, who our roommate got us to take in) to be neutered 3 weeks prior to her coming into labor. So, the day I took the boys in Astra decides it's time to have her babies. When I got back home from dropping the boys off, Astra started having her litter. The first one was a breach kitty and had no sac, poor Astra didn't know what was happening to her, and the kitty was clawing its way out of her. The other two came out without any problems, however, I had to pull off their sacs because Astra didn't know that was her job. She never even carried them in her mouth, I would do that for her if the kitties needed moving.

She was the over seerer of the household, whenever there was a cat fight she would run in and break it up.

She lived with us for 16 years and died at home.

203. Thank you for sharing your memories of Astra*Luna with us, MM.
What a beautiful spirit your beloved friend has. (I say "has" because, of course, she's still around.)

Any chance that you might to this as your username? It's a beautiful name! :)

207. You can translate AstraLuna
as StarMoon. For some reason that seems fitting.

209. Thanks for the kind words, but I'm going to stick with MagickMuffin
because that has been my cybername forever, and I kinda like it.

We also had another kitty we rescued that we named Electra. She was a Maine Coon and loved to perch herself atop the chairs I would sit and and give me head hugs and kisses.

We took in a cat (Steeva) for my neighbor as it belonged to her recently deceased brother and she was going to have Steeva put to sleep if we didn't take Steeva in, so we took decided to add her to our family. She looks exactly like Astra, but she is a very withdrawn kitty. Apparently after her owner got her as a kitten they decided to get a dog, so Steeva was kinda left to her own devices. She doesn't like to be petted much, although she will occasionally sit in my lap (first time she did she was so nervous she peed on me) and she does give head hugs.

My other kitty we rescued Kilala also has some personal problems. I think she was abandoned when we found her at the In-laws. She doesn't like using the litter box, no matter how often I clean it.
But she does love to give me kisses, sometimes if I point to my face she will kiss me there.

But my two little feral kitties are THE BEST :loveya: they follow me around the house just like they did their biomama. It's so cute. I have even started letting them sleep with me. My comforter is a velveteen fabric and those two kitties leave little sparkles whenever they lay down with me. It's like having a star-field inside the bedroom.

205. That's a beautiful name and story
Both names are great but each one reveals a different side of you.
MagickMuffin sounds like a fun offbeat person, the type who would go for brownies with a certain added ingredient.
AstraLuna sounds like a spiritual person, floating in flowing white robes.
Of course, these are just my impressions.

and the Astra*Luna name as well. So, your impression serves you well.

I've been meaning to tell you that I :loveya: your new name. It is very appropriate for you. It indicates that while you might not be "in search of sanity" it gives it a perspective that there is now a "Claws" to the search.

Well done:thumbsup:

212. Just want to say ..
even though I didn't take any of the names discussed in this thread, it was a HUGE catalyst, I think for all of us.

Thank you so much for hosting the naming ceremony, Dover!

The name game helped us articulate things about ourselves. It also gave us some insight into our fellow ASAH'ers.
Now, I have to ask you, how did you pick "Why Syzygy?"

Though the given names weren't necessarily offered for use as our DU names, I am truly so happy that the naming was a strong catalyst and inspired a 'who am I' quest and a recognition of one another. There is something powerful about declaring and wearing that new name as well.

Hey-a-a-hay!
