Am I crazy?
(Cross posted from The Stars This Week) ...

... about 18 months ago I took a job that has given me nothing but grief. Last July, we got a new Director and I hoped against hope that he would finally make necessary changes for the better but instead has nested himself with the ol' boys club and apparently aims no higher than to collect a paycheck until he's ready to retire.

I bit my tongue as long as I could and, despite the gloom and doom of everything around us, gave my 30 day notice at the end of January. Everyone I know is screaming that I should have stayed and just kept collecting a paycheck, but ... I couldn't take another day. Does that make any sense?

For some reason, I had no fear. No panic. Rather than the fear of falling off a cliff with no net, I feel like I have an invisible parachute of sorts and will land okay.

I have a little money saved up and recently got the ok to register back into the Master's Degree Program I had started (then stopped) in 2004/05. I've got a mortgage but feel like the house is going to "take care" of me. Wierd?

Maybe my lack of fear is because I am finally listening to Spirit and going in the direction she wants me to - my Master's in NonProfit Management and ultimately doing Community Work full time. O8) Or maybe its beacuse I'm totally in denial of the true state of the economy and am going to crash land, hard. :(

Is this part of the 'Ascension' or 'Change' that we're collectively supposed to be going through? A mid-life crisis? Or am I nuts?

(My birthdate is 8/13/66, BTW: Leo with -- I think -- Capricorn rising)

1. You are not crazy to want to leave a job that gives you no satisfaction.
On the practical side though, it would have probably been better if you had found a job before quitting. However, since you didn't, I hope you will find a good job quickly that you will be happy with.

2. being the pragmatic person i am, this is a tough one for me. but i have a friend who has done
this for over a decade. she had some money. things happen and she got a house and she is bringing in some income with something she enjoys, .... working with glass and giving classes on it. she is a believer in your thinking

i do live that way in many many ways.... but $? i have a security issue.

4. No, you are not crazy. And you did the right thing.
Too many people spend years and years at jobs they hate and are soul-draining. I have argued myself blue in the face with some people that they should leave. Over and over again I hear, "Oh, but I MUST have this job!"

My question is always, "Is this literally the only job in existence?" There is always something else you can do.

Follow your instincts. You already understand that you need to support yourself somehow.

All of us can live on less than we thought we needed. I've had to cut way back because of changes in my life, and I'm happier than I've ever been.

5. Thanks for the feedback, everyone ...
... trust me, I am as neurotic as the next guy and the thought of "just walking away" would normally give me hives, but something - almost like a gentle voice and a hand on my shoulder - said "do it, it'll be ok" & I felt like I had nothing to be afraid of.

And in the first few days afterward, it was like I knew I should be panicking and was almost freaked out because I WAS NOT panicking. I haven't slept this good in years!

Wierd.

8. I don't think you're crazy, Myrina.
At least you were nice by giving notice. I had one job (at a Christian Singles office) that was so bogus, a lying despicable place that preyed on lonely people, that I couldn't stand one day longer and had to quit because I was talking directly to these clients. The counselors (sales people) did the real flim-flam once the clients came in.

I realized for all to be well I had to be well first and there was no chance for that the longer I stayed there. First time ever I did not give into the security center.

Here's to you for a smooth transition into your heart's desires

10. "I feel like I have an invisible parachute of sorts"

I had a similar feeling when I got laid-off,
I hated that job.

11. I don't think you're crazy in the least.
This past year was rather rough for me and MrSG, but in October, I finally got a good paying job at a company I really like. In December, MrSG got laid off after 10 years at the same company.

He was a little freaked out at first, but I wasn't at all. He's getting unemployment right now, and even without it, we could make it, as we have no debt, and the household bills are manageable with my salary, plus I can save money too.

Anyway, he has now decided to go to school. Unemployment in Washington will grant some people the okay to go to school and still get benefits, if there is nothing available in the field in which they were working when they were laid off. There IS nothing for him out there right now, so he may have a good chance of keeping his benefits while going to school. Even if he's not, he has more than enough money in his 401K to pay for it, and if you take money out for education, you don't get hit with the big early withdrawal fees. So, we'll be fine.

It just feels right to both of us, so I think he's on the right path.
