For the non astrologers, renaming the forum.
Apparently the astrolgers want their own forum, which leaves the rest of us here. However, what's left isn't really what the title suggests. I don't think my practice of ancient arts like the Tarot is really new age but very old age. So I guess we may want to rename this forum if the astrologers go.

My suggestion would be for Ancient arts of spirituality, divination and alternative healing. I think it would explain more what this is about. I know we cross pollinate with the Wiccans, but theirs is a religion and what we do is a practices outside of any specific religions.

What do the rest of you say, or do you have any other suggestions?

6. If Skinner agrees to a separate forum for the astrologers
and we need to rename this one, I think we should take all the suggestions and put them in a poll and vote on them. Metaphysics is a very good suggestion and is broad enough to cover a lot of what people call New Age.

80. All the suggestions on these threads are good. Metaphysics
seems to be necessary to describe what this forum is about. I hope Skinner will agree to putting it back in like orignally proposed ten months ago. I'm kind of agreeing with everyone else that maybe we shouldn't change the name. I think Metaphysics should be added though. This renaming thing started when the astrologers indicated they wanted to take astrology with with them making this forum Sprirituality and Alternative healing, which didn't make much sense except to people who are into faith healing. We then needed something all encompassing of what this forum was about and Metaphysics fits the bill, but it seems Skinner doesn't like it, so I hope he changes his mind.

83. I think too, we don't need to change the name of this forum
It would be nice to have METAPHYSICS back, but its always been in the mission statement:)

I think we probably started this in reaction to some folks wanting their own astrology forum. So it may be Political Astrology or whatever that they end up with....and thats cool. No need we can't remain with the name we began our group with.

I mean after all, no one has exclusive rights to the word *astrology*...right??

Since we had it at the beginning...lets keep it, as many will continue to post their astrology as before...in this forum.

(This thread is getting a bit convoluted...perhaps we should start a new one????)

4. I did too, but there is a fundamental difference.
Tarot, I Ching, and other methods of divination are intuitive, not based on complicated charts of heavenly bodies. Spirituality can come from many diverse and sometimes contradictory sources. Alternative healing, well, it's more scientific than the former and maybe they might demand their own forum in time too.

I think of the great posts we've had in the past in the Meeting Room covering subjects other than astrology, especially Dover's wonderful posts, which I read but don't always post to. Those wonderful posts covering Feng Shui and other exotic life arts not well known in the west.

So I guess either we have to leave and let them have the forum or they can form their own.

14. New mission statement ideas....
Maybe we could go with a new name & new mission statement & the astrologers can keep the forum & change it to their new statement.

So...if we reach that place, how is this for a starting point??
(it would not preclude any astro discussion either)

Metaphysical Community or Metaphysical Meeting Room
or whatever name we end up with

This is a group for those who wish to positively explore issues of metaphysical pursuits including but not limited to: spirituality, divination of various methods, homeopathy, flower essences & alternative medicine and healing, ascension, anomalies ie: cropcircles,UFO's etc and other subjects having to do with metaphysical, holistic physical and spiritual growth & traditions.

This group is intended as a positive place for those who desire a deeper discussion of these stated topics and is not intended as a place to argue the merits of beliefs or choices.

NOTE: Discussion of Alternative and Complementary Healing Methods is in no way intended to take the place of mainstream medical care/tests but to serve as a place to come together to discuss and share other options, experiences and modalities of healing. Members are always advised to seek the advice of a medical doctor before experimenting with any alternative healing methods.

The mission statement is REALLY great -- but I think we should sleep on it, and the disclaimer needs just a tiny bit of tweaking IMO. Too, we are working on that waning moon, so it might be worthwhile to even wait to request the new forum, or the renamed this one (and we should decide that), until the moon is stronger.

3. I felt I grew from learning more about Astrology.
I'm sorry it ended up this way, but I'll support both groups simply because I think maybe it will make people happier in the long run.

I see a lot of crossover between Astrology and Tarot (just as there is a crossover between Numerology and Tarot.) I felt I was learning and expanding my understanding of Tarot by learning more about Astrology, but I can do that if they are here with us or in a different forum...

I like the divination title, but it IS a metaphysical forum as well. One of the things I have loved most has been the acceptance here in this group, so, I'd suggest calling it the Metaphysical Community. That might be a bit TOO warm and fuzzy for some--I dunno.

Anyhow, I'm still here.

5. I personally wouldn't mind if people like yourself posted
some astrology here if you felt it fit better in certain instances. Now numerology and Kabbala are something I haven't seen posted here. That could be interesting for practitioners of those arts to post as well.

I also wouldn't mind some anthropological posts regarding shamanism and those practices of spirituality. I would like to see Opimoimoi put his Kahuna posts here instead of GD.

tie in with intuition/psychology/philosophy/politics/sociology etc., and other more esoteric themes and fields.

The more technical threads and posts are interesting but over my head, while those connecting with themes like those listed above are absolutely fascinating to me.

"I personally wouldn't mind if people like yourself posted some astrology here

LOL. Glad to hear it. Who knows, I might have something to say about astrology before I die. ;-)

I USED TO self-identify as an astrologer. But now I'm getting the message that I must NOT be an astrologer, since I don't belong to any astrological professional group and all that and don't mind the kookie stuff I also believe in being posted here.

Thanks for starting this thread. I love it when people immediately grasp the New Reality of a situation and jump right over all that spilt milk to make the moves to get things going forward. Pragmatic, sensible, smart, and great leadership to boot. I've had my little angst and am EAGER for the astrologers -- who have excluded me so I guess I'll stop referring to myself as one of "them" -- to find another home.

I agree that we should welcome subjects on shamanism and indeed ALL the earth-centered religions of old and other traditional subjects too. I hope we can fold it into the mission statement (if it's not there already -- I didn't study the thing, just read it quickly).

Kephra posted some kabbalism, I think. Niether that nor numerology are of particular interest to me, but the ALL belong in here. ALL of them. I think we should think of a New Age Bookstore and all the subjects you'll find in there -- women's spirituality, for example. Buddhism, Sufism, Native American traditional ways, minerals and crystals, dowsing (that's one subject I remember from the Meeting Room), on and on and on.

Thanks again for the thread.

I think we would need to use the word "metaphysical" in there somewhere because it is probably the broadest term (tarot, iching, healing arts, esoteric subjects, ancient arts, etc. could loosely be contained beneath that umbrella). But I'm going to save my brain cells until we get the final word from skinner. In the meantime I'll sleep on it.

13. Maybe if we are lucky..Skinner will let us have the word back....
we had "metaphysics" in our title originally but some of the skeptics threw a hissy fit and so Skinner felt it necessar to remove it.

I think "Metaphysical Community" would be perfect. Covers a lot of things in here the people post about....oooh ooh...how about ....

METAPHYSICAL MEETING ROOM

Am hoping Skinner might be cool with that and maybe by now the skeptics will be too.

I am sorry the astrologers want to distance themselves from the other posts here but I can understand it too. Guess I was hoping for a bit more tolerance from a group who has been fighting the battles they have to gain respect & legitimacy ever since the days "science became god".

(Even though there is a lot of technical aspects in astrology...for me the heart of it comes from somewhere beyond the aspects & math....at least thats where my years of study have led me.)

Anyhow....this is life & growth & change, isn't it??

19. DR, I love it- Metaphysical Meeting Room!
As a biochemist and one who has done many years of scientific research, I, too, always find it funny when some struggle to be put in the 'scientific' category.

At precisely this time in history scientists in all areas are exploding the boundaries of all that we sought to quantify & qualify over the past several centuries!

The vast unknown in science lies largely in what we have yet to understand about the spiritual dimension.

It seems that so much about being 'scientific' clings to the ego of man.

73. It was a few of the more rabid skeptics from "the old flame war days"
They didn't feel we had the right to use the word metaphysics because it was (in their minds only) a "scientific" term.

Never mind that the term Metaphysical Bookstore did not mean a store filled with scientific books....or Metaphysical Studies would more likely teach you about astrology than get you a BS degree.

Evidently the common usage of the term for the past...hmm...25 or 30 years made no difference. They basically threw a hissy fit.

So in order to try to keep the peace with everyone ( which, as we all know is an impossible and thankless job) Skinner removed it from our title, even though we got to keep it in our mission statement.

Even though WE all (ok most of us) find the things we post here not to be unusual, many who come to DU have never heard of much of what we take as natural and normal...thus we are "labeled" as "far out". This being Skinners site, he gets the final say as to what content gets to stay or gets "invited" to leave. I am hoping that he will continue to allow us this group and whatever growth/changes might be of benefit to us.

FWIW the metaphysical community is quite large and by necessity ( as we have sampled here) an underground group...guess we have that in common with "Democratic Underground"!

(Yes, Mr. Skinner sir, you can take this a plea to not shut us down or kick us out. Thank you for your time. :) )

last week we got it badly, but the winds have shifted now.

Glad MS is keeping you busy too, how exciting!

the DoA was wonderful, is there a new book out yet?

Back on topic, the breakup of this group may be for the best after all, I know I have been chased away by some rude responses when I asked ignorant questions.

Sad really though......

going back and forth btw. the two forums anyway.

 I feel like I'm a teenager and my boyfriend is trying to break up with me...thinking "Can't we just stay together and go back to the way it used to be." I really like the astrology threads but, don't have the knowledge to contribute. Now I feel discriminated against! x(

And, I hope we will keep the alternative healing in the name.

Just my two cents.

61. I have some questions.....
In taking Astrology out of this forum, dose that mean that discussions about Astrology will no longer happen here? There are, as have been pointed out, lot's of connections in the Tarot, Numerology, and Astrology. Also, what if some of the herbalists decide to become 'more professional than thou' and want their own forum? Would my sharing of my knowledge and experience of how to make herbal tinctures then be forbidden? (Which I haven't done here after seeing all the strong opinions leading to condescending, authoritative tones) E-mail campaigns that bring in others that haven't posted in lengthly periods to break apart an existing group are divisive and show one or two views that wish to become the dominate view. People will be people and we're not going to all agree on everything.

Skinner has a great dilemma in figuring this out and I suggest we fully support him in whatever discussion he makes for that is what will be good for the DU as a whole.

64. You bring up some good points icymist...
and you see clearly what has gone down here.

I hope we are free to post things that interest member of the the group. I don't see how posting about making herbal tinctures should cause a problem. That is something that one can find elsewhere on the web, so I can't imagine why it should not be allowed here. ( but thats just my opinion which means bupkus).

I find it difficult to imagine not being allowed Sostice or Equinox threads here any more either. Celestial events are not just the domain of astrologers after all.

If the astrologers want a more technical and in depth forum and Skinner is willing to grant their wishes, then perhaps that is best. will it lead to an exodus of others??? I certainly hope not.

But you are so right...we'll never get everyone to agree on everything.

"All related discussion" on any given matter "which would include topics discussed on other forums" or something to that manner. I look forward to discussing herbal subjects, which also has Astrological aspects to it as well.

67. I DO hope we get some herbal threads going!
"Grass cures" are something I take a very real interest in--and know very little about for practical application. (I did have a great time telling my daughter's kindergarten class about garlic and its antibiotic properties a couple of years ago, however!)

PLEASE tell me we will see more stuff on herbalism!!!

I'm hoping we can open the doors up to all kinds of discussions--things like I Ching and Runes and Tarot and Remote Viewing--and anything else that we feel interested to know more about. If we want to discuss ghosts, or reincarnation, then, let's DO it! If we want to discuss the Loch Ness Monster, Chupacabre', aliens, and Mothman, we can do that too--as long as we keep an open mind and open hearts.

I guess maybe I am not as hung up on perceptions of "credibility" as I could be. IMO, it is unwise to close off things you haven't investigated or at least learned something about.

Years ago, nobody was sure why Jesuit Bark worked to help people with Malaria. It was only years later that they found out it was the quinine it contained that made it effective. Now, it is a commonly accepted treatment for the illness. Much the same can be said of several of our medical "discoveries."

Any Neurologist can tell you that we really have only mapped a small portion of the human brain and how it functions. It is a possibility that ESP or other abilities deemed as "psychic" and viewed with a skeptical eye are actually brain functions that can be learned in the same way that we learn to speak and walk.

Do I believe everything that people tell me? Nah. Santa doesn't live on the North Pole and I am not looking to buy a bridge. I'm also not willing to shut myself off from all the really wonderful stuff out there that we are only beginning to learn about.

It is my biggest hope that all can progress with these changes here and feel OK. There is space at the table for everyone.

70. Wow.
I am uplifted by the positive ideas flowing from this thread. This fresh burst of energy can only benefit us!

I love "Metaphysical Community" and "Metaphysical Meeting Room." I think Eloriel's disclaimer is great, and your description, too.

I just have one request:

When all is said and done, can we bless the updated group with a "Sacred Space" thread?

There are all kinds of sacred spaces, these days. ;-)

:loveya:

P.S. My grandboy just woke up and came looking for me. He wanted to know who I was "talking" to on the computer. I told him, and he said, "Who is she?" So I told him that you were my friend in AZ, and a wonderful artist. He asked what you "drew," so I showed him some images. He says, "Tell her she is a great artist."

Yes,I agee when things calm down ( as they inevitably will) we will get some sacred space going again in here.

75. yawn, astrology is UNDER divination. it is a SUBCATEGORY.
Edited on Sat Jul-02-05 04:13 AM by NuttyFluffers
period.

each campy camp can do as they please. if i wanna talk divination from cartomancy, hydromancy, astrology, numerology, runes, pyromancy, i ching, ifa, geomancy, or the latest vibe i get from picking my nose i'm gonna talk about it. and it's most likely gonna be here.

if there is those who don't want to contribute to the discussion, fine. however one pleases. if they need a separate group to discuss a subcategory (western astrology) of a subcategory (astrology) of a subcategory (divination) of a subcategory (spiritualism, mysticism, and its arts -- aka potential name) of a subcategory (religion & mythos) of a category (culture) whatever floats their boat.

don't wanna get involved, but i think it's silly. is it really that hard to move the mouse cursor to click back a page or two? or check out "my posts" to keep up with a topic you're replying to? sure this is the biggest DU group (or at least with the most posts, dunno 'bout people), but things are nowhere near as fast and furious as LBN, GD, GD: P, or Lounge. what's so hard to keep up with? is there some sort of "taint"? is it too hard to start a new topic on your interest? seriously, just don't get the issue. and frankly, since y'all got my panties in a wad now, i don't wanna get it right now.

i think all y'all who be flamin' ta bits need to take a big ol' toke on the cosmic spliff, sit your ass down a bit, and wait until your mercury in retrograde passes.

ps: this is my post on this whole madness, venting and all. havne't the time and energy to bother keeping up with the other posts about this. so excuse the frustration. now i'm off to clean my chakras... scientifically...
