Alternative Medicine: What Works?
Alternative Medicine: What Works?

Faced with an unremitting health problem that conventional treatment cannot resolve, would you opt to try alternative therapies? Many people do. Even the most educated are often attracted to less invasive or more natural therapies. But do they work? Let’s examine some of the sometimes deceptive, sometimes effective, alternative therapies that circulate in the health rumor mill and never seem to fall into obscurity...cont'd

Many Immigrants Choosing Herbal Remedies By JENNIFER KAY, Associated Press Writer
Wed Jul 6, 4:29 PM ET

MIAMI - When Luckner Pierrsaint feels congested from the flu or bronchitis, he doesn't go to a doctor or a drugstore. He takes his own concoction: a spoonful of a sugar-and-purple-onion mixture left outside for three nights.

Pierrsaint fled Haiti for Florida in 1989 but still relies on the plant-based remedies he learned back home from his father and grandfather, both voodoo priests.

"In my country, it can take three days to see a doctor, so we know what to do," said Pierrsaint, 52, who grows ingredients in his North Miami backyard.

Faced with skyrocketing health care costs, lack of insurance and language barriers, many immigrants believe they are better off with homegrown remedies from their native cultures than conventional treatments..cont'd

1. This made me think of a story.
My grandson has a cd with a collection of stories, folksongs, folktales, etc. from the rural south. Herbal remedies run like a theme through some of them; the narrator tells about talking to some old-timers who lived back in the woods, and asking them how they did things growing up; they tell stories about "gettin' their medicine from the woods." Willow bark tea, comfrey, etc..

One of the stories is about Dr. Bayer experimenting with and analyzing willow bark to see what component reduced pain and fever, and eventually coming up with aspirin.

A couple of decades ago, when the plight of rainforests were thrust to the forefront of (some of) our consciences, I remember articles discussing the rare plants that were disappearing, and how they might have led to cures and medicines we hadn't come up with yet.

What does the laboratory do, but try to imitate, refine, or improve upon the remedies nature provides? And make a big profit off of it, as well, of course.

2. I think its sad that they now call them "alternative"...
when for years , many of these so-called alternatives were all we had and they worked well.

For most things, colds, flu, upset stomach, headaches, etc...there are natural remedies and most especially herbs that really help. The body will heal itself (who else can really do that anyway??) if supported and nurtured. So many modern pharmaceuticals throw the body off balance by treating only symptoms and do not treat or support the body as a whole.

Not saying there haven't been incredible lifesaving advances made cause there certainly have. I'm saying that what we have in nature we now consider to be alternative...alternative to what....the man made stuff of big pharmacorps & medicine I guess/.

Again..bottom line is making money first & foremost...why let people find things that make & keep them healthy when there is NO profit in it??

:hi:LWolf....sounds like a cool CD your grandson has :)

4. Hey, that's neat!
I use ionic silver for many, many things. It truly stands alone as one of the best 'antibiotics and antivirals' there is.

I would love to purchase from you. But, how do you ensure it's quality??

5. By using distilled water only
clean mason jars, and by keeping the silver electrodes clean between batches. my generator automatically shuts off at between 10 and 12ppm. Its not a big process but I know what I'm getting when its done. I've heard that you can make these generators for about 15.00. but I paid 100 for this one and with the silver electrodes I'm told it will make 75 gal.

8. Me too....
I have been using colloidal silver for years for all kinds of things. We make ours here at home too. Otherwise it is too expensive if you buy it at the healthfood store. Very easy to make. I use it the minute I feel like I am getting sick, sore throat. Use it topically on cuts, bites etc. I am using it currently on a foster dog I have that had severe skin problems from unknown origins. He is coming along very well. Using it topically and internally for him.

9. Hi Jeanette....and welcome
:hi: Sure hope you are not in the hurricanes paths ...these days who knows!?

I think colloidal silver is great too. One of those things that you want to think of at the first sign of "catching something" like you said.

I am lucky I have a friend who makes it ...but at somepoint I'll probably have to make my own, too. Can't afford the tiny bottles from the health food stores either.
