Double gardening bonus!
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 04:48 PM by hippywife
As you all know we have chickens, eleven of them to be exact. We compost the litter but as you might imagine, it gets way ahead of the amount of kitchen scraps I can possibly add to the pile. The solution has been really great!

I work in a retirement community that has approximately 325-350 residents at any given time and we of course have a large kitchen and three dining rooms. The girl that does the salad bar is sending me home every week day with anywhere from 3 to 6 gallons of raw fruit and veggie scraps. I bring them home and feed some of it to the chickens and the rest goes on the pile. I've been able to layer that booty with the chicken litter quite well and the chickens love the scraps of tomatoes, apples, melon, and sometimes they will eat the green leaf lettuce. I give the girl at work a few eggs here and there in appreciation for the wonderful bounty she supplies me.

We'll soon have to build another pallet composter at this rate.

1. You might consider building one of these
http://www.instructables.com/id/Compost-Tumbler/

There are other designs but I like this one the best 'cause you can shovel it out easily. These kind of composters make compost fast.

CAUTION: The above website is like crack. You will find lots of projects for that handy hubby of yours.

Thanx for sharing it!

We really do need to get a rolling composting system built. Would be so much easier for both of us, especially him with his bad back.

:hi:
