Any tips on a central texas veggie garden?

I am currently cultivating an area in my back yard for a veggie garden.

I have been successful in the past however,I purchased a new home and the back yard is predominately shaded with huge oak trees. No full sun anywhere.

Any ideas of what may work?

1. My suggestion is go ahead and buy some plants and see what happens

As you know here in Texas the heat can be unbearable so I believe having shade will help protect the plants from to much sun.

I've grown tomatoes in shaded areas and they produced a good yield. Morning sun is the best around these parts, however, the afternoon sun can be extremely harsh.

2. Wish we could trade

I have one tree and a fledgling in my yard and would kill for some of your shade! Alas.

A friend of ours has a similar setup and has peppers, gourds, etc. but in containers so she can control their environment. For some really good information on the area, go to Bob Webster's web site (www.shadesofgreensa.com ) or Howard Garret's (www.dirtdoctor.com ). Both have free newsletters you can get emailed to you.

Webster is on KTSA in San Antonio on Saturdays from 6am-9am and Sundays from 8am-11am on 550 AM. Garrett's got archived webcasts on his site as well.

3. You might want to check out Garden Web forum

Here is a link to the Oklahoma Garden Web forum, but you can find one for Texas also. A lot of helpful people on these forums. A poster by the name of "Okiedawn" used to live in the Ft. Worth area and she is an absolute walking encyclopedia...she's always glad to help people also. Good luck.......

5. Till in some chicken or turkey compost

and hit them once a week with weak Miracle Grow. I live in Taylor and my tomatoes are always 6 to 8 feet tall. Early Girls work best for me. PM me if you have any questions.
