Early spring garden pron! (pic heavy)
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 11:33 AM by WolverineDG
While this won't be as good as bvar's (I can never hope to come close to the awesomeness of bvar's garden), I thought I'd share some pics from my humble endeavors, hoping that you all will soon have wonderful, warm, sunny weather to play in. :)

First, bluebonnets. I :loveya: bluebonnets!

A chayote squash that sprouted before I could use it in a caldo, so I planted it. It grew! :o
(along with some shamrocks I got at Target about 2 or 3 years ago, you know those little $1 pots with seeds? Yeah, they didn't start in that pot, but somehow migrated over & grew. I don't have the heart to yank them out.)

Now to the backyard:

My experiment station (seedlings & attempts to get avocado seeds to sprout; there's corn in them there McD coffee cups)

Lazarus the Tomato & various herbs w/broccoli & the odd bluebonnet

The main garden, formed because the previous owner put a brick outline around a now-dead pecan tree; not exactly 6 sq. feet, but works for me (Roma tomatoes & marigolds; the potatoes haven't sprouted yet):

Blackberries:

Bianca & Gidget, Garden Supervisors (ie, they help mommy dig, as you can tell) :

1. I am so envious!! We will
get more nasty weather this month. I have started my tomato's,chili's,squash, and my Granddaughters got carried away with the watermelon seeds in the peat pots. We got the ground tilled and bought chicken wire yesterday to keep my goats and chickens out . I was hoping it would be nice enough today to till in the manure but it was too windy. Hopefully by Friday. I am so excited this is our first garden in about 25 years. I also bought a blackberry bush.

2. The best success I have found with growing avocados:
Make a big compost pile. Throw your avocado pits in the pile. Every few months go turn the pile and look for sprouting seeds. :)

(I think the pile keeps them evenly warm and moist.)

3. I gave 2 seeds to the maintenance guy at the office
he has a mega-green thumb & has sprouted avocados for three other people & the office itself. :)

7. If you are wanting avocados, and not just a pretty tree, you shouldn't start from seed.
You should get a tree that was started by grafting if you hope to have fruit in a few years. It would likely be several years before you get fruit, if at all, when starting from a pit. I have also read that fruit from trees grown from a pit are not as good as those grown from a grafted tree.

4. Thanks for the views!
:hi: We've hyacinth and daffodils blooming. And peach trees.
I'm not the main gardener in the house. But, I definitely approve!
Good eats!

5. You're in Texas, I see the Whataburger cup!
I'm in East Texas south of Palestine. I'm in Houston County.

Planted a 12 x 12 foot plot on the back acre (I got two acres on the main drag in a little bitty town).

Squash, tomatoes, herbs, okra, beans.

6. Whataburger, what a burger, just what a burger should be
Yup, I'm kinda hooked on 'em. Dad would often dine at the original Whatburger (which was a trailer or something), & I worked at one in high school. :)

I'm even a fan of Whataburger on Face Book.

I need to take more pics of my garden now. The tomatoes are now taking over! :o

I am so tired of cold and rain and snow and rain and cold and snow and rain and cold.

We left our "lazarus" tomato on our porch last yr rather than bringing it inside for the winter and it died at the ripe (?) old age of 3. RIP
