Vermicomposting
Has anybody here tried it? We're starting up a worm bin, well I am, LostinVA is rather displeased with the whole thing, and I'm just wondering if anybody else has done it.

To me, the start up costs seem to be cheaper than regular composting, and I don't have to remember to turn stuff by hand, so I figured I'd go that route. I've got a 1000 red wigglers on the way.

If anybody's interested in following us setting this thing up, we're covering it on our blog:

1. Mine started by itself outside
We have lots of worms here. My compost pile turned into a vermicomposting pile. I don't have much experience with the indoor kind.

2. Yeah, we're not doing it indoors
The set up is going outside. They said it can be done indoors, but I think Box o'worms in the dining room would lead to divorce.

3. I was thinking about it last year.
I checked this woman's book outta the library because she's supposed to be the best source for information. Couldn't get the husband excited about it and we're already doing so much, neither of is felt like adding one more task.

I still think I might just order the worms and add them to our outdoor compost pile. :hi:

4. If you're not planning a compost pile, the vermicomposting will give you plenty of good stuff
I don't vermicompost because I have a good outdoor compost bin but one of my sibs vermicomposts and really likes it. Her bins are indoors and I didn't notice any odors when I visited. You do need to keep on top of the schedule for feeding and draining off the liquid.

5. Where did you order the worms from?
I've had a bin before, and it went well.

The non-compostable stuff is easily tossed, and the other stuff goes FAST.

6. I was going to order them from wormman.com, because they're in NJ but...
they were out of worms (:wtf:) so I got them from www.flowerdepotstore.com.

7. nobody loses all the time
nobody loses all the time

i had an uncle named
Sol who was a born failure and
nearly everybody said he should have gone
into vaudeville perhaps because my Uncle Sol could
sing McCann He Was A Diver on Xmas Eve like Hell Itself which
may or may not account for the fact that my Uncle

Sol indulged in that possibly most inexcusable
of all to use a highfalootin phrase
luxuries that is or to
wit farming and be
it needlessly
added

my Uncle Sol's farm
failed because the chickens
ate the vegetables so
my Uncle Sol had a
chicken farm till the
skunks ate the chickens when

my Uncle Sol
had a skunk farm but
the skunks caught cold and
died and so
my Uncle Sol imitated the
skunks in a subtle manner

or by drowning himself in the watertank
but somebody who'd given my Uncle Sol a Victor
Victrola and records while he lived presented to
him upon the auspicious occasion of his decease a
scruptious not to mention splendiferous funeral with
tall boys in black gloves and flowers and everything and
i remember we all cried like the Missouri
when my Uncle Sol's coffin lurched because
somebody pressed a button
(and down went
my Uncle
Sol

and started a worm farm)
