I ate the first two tomatoes of this season this afternoon.

One was a Roma the other was a 'Better Boy'. The 'Better Boy' variety was everything I had hoped for. Very tasty, juicy, nice color, not a tough skin and not acidic. I planted 22 tomato plants and staggered them out over about six weeks time. Most are Roma and Better Boy and a few are Jelly Bean and a couple of Big Beef. I just wanted to pass along this recommendation for Better Boy. I'll be growing them again for sure.

1. I've been eating Romas for a couple of weeks now

my bigger tomatoes haven't ripened yet. I saw some Better Boys at Lowe's yesterday, so if I get motivated, I'll go down & get a couple of them. :)

2. You are so fortunate. I these parts, it is hard to find a farm stand

to buy flats. New England has been so cold, wet and just plain miserable that my local farmer still had his veggie plants in the greenhouse as of last week. I'll try again this week. I'd like to get something planted before the next frost.

This year it will be tomato's and basil in pots. No real garden due to certain things I cannot control.
I'm anxious to get the pots going.

but here's a question from a newbie vegetable gardener. How long does it take a tomato plant to begin making tomatoes? I have these really pretty green plants and no tomatoes.

When you buy tomato plants at Lowes are they Heirloom? Can you use the seeds to grow new plants?

4. Maturation rate depends on the variety of

tomato (among other things). Often you will see the info on the tags. Garden Centers like Lowes
and Home Depot often have heirloom varieties....at least here in S California. If you can't find
the info on the tags, check them out on line. I usually find the best selection at regular nurseries.
