The pecking order has been shuffled.

Bill brought home four more hens this morning. They are a year and one month old so they are already laying. We're gonna start selling our eggs now to the guys he works with since the guy we got them from, who also works there, is getting rid of all of his chickens and used to sell his eggs to them all. The money will go directly into a chicken feed kitty.

Not great pics but they are pretty and they're huge. Rambo tried to take one of them on already and lost. So she is no longer queen of the pen. I know it's the nature of things but I kinda feel bad for her. (The black one is not Rambo and is not new. All the new ones look identical.)

1. Always love the chicken posts.
Ours were just squabbling about who gets the best laying box.

The new birds look great, and they are HUGE.
I thought the first photo was of a rooster.
Even looks like clipped spurs on the back of the legs.
Are you sure she is not a he?

2. I thought that at first too

but they all show signs of rooster abuse on their backs. I really never knew chickens could be so much fun to have around. I wish we could let them roam outside the pens again. I hate keeping them caged up but we've lost too many and with bobcats reported in the area, they're safer where they are.

How are yours doing? :hi:

3. Ours are doing well.

They are spoiled rotten, and prefer to beg scraps at the kitchen door than to actually going out and foraging. They are trained well to the "Chick..chick...chick" call, and it is funny to see them come racing and 1/2 flying across the yard when we call them.

Elvis is pugnacious, and has some pretty awesome spurs. We are careful when he is out in the yard.
He is protective of the hens. He keeps them rounded up and stands guard while they are foraging.

We would also like to add 4 - 6 more hens.

How much are you charging for the eggs?
We have also decided to start charging for the eggs, enough to pay for the feed.

4. Unfortunately, the guy that was selling them
where my husband works was only selling them for a $1.50 dozen, which was too low, and my husband told him it was and tried to pay him more but he wouldn't take it. We're thinking we can only go $2 max there. I take some to work and just give them away to the girls in the kitchen who give me the salad bar scraps for the chickens and the compost pile.

We are going to put all the money into a kitty for winter feed.

Glad yours are all doing well.
