Egg cartons, styrofoam/cardboard for starting seeds?

Got them and throw them away and wondered if recycling them would work for veggies like spinach, lettuce, onion or radish seeds..

Starter mix or potting soil, one seed per egg, punch a few holes in bottom.

Can't afford peat pots and other starter stuff and looking for alternatives. ANY alternatives.

Let me know if you've done it before and how you made out.

1. Nevermind - silly me just found a ton of ideas...

TP, PT and gift wrap rolls, egg shells, egg cartons (both halves), newspaper, soda cans....

2. I did use both kinds for starting last spring. Be careful the cardboard can mold.

Another use for the cardboard cartons is to use them to make small fire starters. We collect the old wax when a candle is too low to be lit. Melted and mixed with a fair bit of old dryer lint and poured into the cardboard containers makes nice (scented if your using scented wax) little fire aids.

3. I don't buy the styrofoam, but I use the cardboard ones for a lot

I've used them as you describe, but I also use them for shipping food or candy or something that needs to stay isolated & upright. My in-laws live in TX & we ship care packages all year, especially during the holidays.

They're easy to stack in a larger box & I can pack the newspaper or corn peanuts or whatever around them.
