Anyone have thoughts on planting Basil in a hanging basket?

I went to the town facility today where you can take all the composted loam you need,. Actually, these last two weeks I have filled 82(very heavy!) 5 gallon buckets. The mountains of soil are huge and there is plenty for everyone.

Sitting with a pile of lawn cuttings and dead tulips was a wonderful hanging basket. Of course, I could plant flowers in it but my space is limited. I have tomatoes and parsley in pots now. I have some very small basil plants. When they are ready to plant, I wonder if they will make it in the hanging pot. Anyone try this?

1. I think a single basil plant would probably get too tall to handle living in a hanging basket, BUT

As long as you aren't looking to make pesto(i.e. need a LOT of leaves), you could do what I did last year when I wanted to grow Lemon Basil and was out of space and time (late summer.) I planted a bunch of seeds in a 8" pot and "harvested" a few leaves from each resulting mini-plant constantly. The plants never got very big (b/c they were stressed from the close quarters and I was always pinching off their tops), but collectively, they gave me enough leaves to cook with and never got big enough to topple the pot.

2. my first nasturtiums are just sprouting this morning...

I planted some in the ground and a few hanging baskets. I too think they will look marvelous.
