2010 bearfan garden - week 7

Two of my tomato plants are duds. They're only about 2 1/2 feet tall. Most of the others are almost to the top of the 4 foot cages I made. In about a week I'm going to pound re-bar through the sides of the cages so they won't fall over from a heavy rain or from the wind. I stopped picking off the yellow flowers now. Since it's been 98 already a few times I better let them make tomatoes before they burn up. I will also need to put a shade over the tomatoes in the very near future. I have to water every day now. The peppers love the direct sun heat. My New mexico Big Jim's and hot banana's are getting some peppers on them now too. I also quit pinching off the flowers on the peppers.

Are you really able to pick the tomatoes through the fence openings? They look small for an arm to get through, let alone a hand holding a large tomatoe.

2. I have about 6 or 7 squares that I cut and bent the wires to get

my hand in there. Once in a while I need to make a new opening but I can usually get the tomatoes from the openings I have or by reaching over the top.

5. Wow!

VERY nice! Enjoy. Here in northern MN, we just got plants in. Hope the weather is good this year. Last year never did warm up. It's actually been very warm already, so I'm hoping... :-)

Your plants always look so healthy. Mine are more vine-like and do not have so much foliage.

I am always envious of the plants in your pictures.

8. I planted 2 this year that I thought would never take off

they looked ridiculous in their huge tomato cages...then it rained for almost a week straight & a few days after that they started growing. They're now almost taller than I am. :wow:
