My hummingbird feeder is hotly-contested real estate with little micro-warriors feeding and fighting over it all day long. Oddly, we seem to get a lot of females and/or immature males and rarely see a true ruby-throated bird at the feeder.
Yesterday, this little fellow showed up. He took occasional sips of nectar and made little flights off into the woods, but spent the majority of the day sitting on the tomato cage that my pea plants are growing in (half of which are dead and half of which are making peas like crazy) and keeping me company as I worked at the kitchen table.
(taken through the kitchen window screen and w/camera phone-- hence lousy quality)
I've had a rough month so far with various bits of bad news and frustrations and was feeling especially rotten yesterday. As the day wore on, looking up and seeing him again and again started to really cheer me up.
He's back for more today. He's a TINY thing, even for a hummingbird, but he's BIG medicine for my wounded heart.
If he's going to stick around, I guess I'd better come up w/ a name for him. :)
