Opinions wanted...
So, I have a couple of large plastic tubs (the big storage kind) that have cracks in the bottoms and are thus no longer good for keeping things safe from moisture/dust/etc. I was thinking about using them to try and grow garlic and shallots. They are basically clear (slightly frosted, I guess) and I wonder if that would let too much light into the operation?

Anyone experienced garlic growers out there have an opinion?

Obviously, I wouldn't start them until October or so, but I am trying to decide if I should keep the containers or Freecycle them to someone who might have a differnt use for them.

1. The soil should keep light from the roots
The only problem I can really think of is that it might allow the soil to become too warm, or condensation might build up and lead to the growth of mold, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.

2. Could you could line them with black plastic trashbags?

Just poke holes in the bottom to allow for drainage.
