One of our new babies got hurt.
Edited on Tue Jul-27-10 07:15 PM by hippywife
She was caught in the fence trying to escape into the garden. When Bill got her out the back of her head and her neck were pretty ripped up so I won't show you pics of that side of her. Trust me when I say it's pretty icky. The other little ones started pecking at the wounded, bleeding area so we put her in an isolation cage and brought her in the house until she heals.

She's very active, eats and drinks, and is totally fine. She stays on the side of the cage where I am usually and chirps at me demanding to be petted. LOL I just stick my finger in the cage and she lets me pet her wherever I want. It's unending entertainment for the kittehs and she doesn't seem to be bothered by them too much as she is completely safe.

2. They are used to watching all the chickens from
the windows and door. Just never seen one this close up before. A little while ago, she and Lena, my orange tabby, were nose to beak for quite a while and both were very calm.

6. No,
they're thinking Noms, bet it tastes just like chicken!

My cats would be so worked into a lather, as would the spaniels, great bird dogs that they are (not)!

3. She is lovely. I'm sorry she got hurt. I hope she heals up quickly.
Is she an Orpington? I have three little Buff Orpington pullets close to that age. I really like the breed so far. My New Hampshire Red is a great layer but she is nowhere near as calm and friendly as the Orp. pullets are.

4. She is.
They are so extremely docile. The reds to seem to be a little more high strung but most will respond to handling at a young age and then be a little more calm as they age if they are handled and socialized to humans.

Good to see you! How are things going out your way? :hi:

5. Things are good with us.

The red is friendly enough with people but she is pretty tough on the Orps. :( They are such gentle little things. We've been trying to introduce everyone but she is a bit of a bully. Hopefully with time she'll chill a bit and everyone will settle into a routine together.

:hi:

Edited to add...your cats are beautiful btw. Very pretty animals.

12. Well, her booboos are looking better every day and
she has never even acted like she was hurt at all. But it's a good thing she will probably be returning to the garden soon. She has become entirely spoiled. The table the cage sits on is in front of my couch, obviously. The past two nights, I've been laying on the couch and digging seedheads out of her hay bed and holding them for her to eat. She will keep it up as long as I do. It's like the old cliche of a slave holding grapes above her masters head, feeding him.

If chickens didn't make such an unholy mess of their surroundings, I'd keep her in the house. I think the cats are so used to her now, they probably wouldn't hurt her. They seem to realize she is being cared for and either lay next to her cage and just watch over her or totally ignore her. It's not quite the novelty it was the first couple of nights.

:D
