Those cherry trees in DC and other places that are so lovely in the spring, they don't

produce fruit, do they? Are they just trees that bloom beautifully, but don't produce anything?

1. Nothing edible.
Many, especially the double flowered types, set no fruit at all to speak of. Some of the single flowered types have tiny, bitter/astringent, inedible (not poisonous, just not tasty) fruit.

My weeping 'Snow Fountain' cherry has tiny, purple cherries about the size of the head of a pin about a month after it blooms. My 'Kwanzan' cherry, which has the large, double pink, fluffy flowers, has never made any kind of fruit to my knowledge.

2. I have an ornamental purple plumb tree that produced a ton of fruit
this summer. That was a first! Needless to say, the neighbors, the birds, and I were very happy campers!

3. I had a flowering cherry at my last house.
Blooms for a few days, then nothing for the rest of the year. Almost worth it, but it keeled over from something.
