plastic or galvanized chicken wire?
plastic or galvanized chicken wire? to keep our sweet but pesky rescue dog out of the raised beds

my husband insists that galvanized fencing is poisonous....um...ok?
http://www.motherearthnews.com/ask-our-experts/galvanized-wire-zb0z09zblon.aspx
I'm getting mixed reviews about this on-line, but mother earth news seems to think it's ok.

Does anyone have any scientific knowledge about this.

Wouldn't the plastic be more toxic?

I'm confused....

does it even matter, really?

AND I need to get the fence up so I can put my seeds in.

1. How big is the dog?
Would screening (like for a screen door) stretched between posts work? Seems less likely to get chewed. Just my two cents, no actual data behind this opinion. ;)

2. I don't think she'll chew it....
she's big and strong, but if there is a barrier I don't think she'd try to get past it.

I just don't want her digging in the beds - or eat the veggies, which she will do.

she thinks she's never getting another meal, even though she eats twice a day.
She was nearly starved to death when I rescued her and had to eat anything that might have nutrition...probably for weeks.

Do you know anything about galvanized chicken wire? -- unless screen door stuff is made of the same thing...do you know?

4. Ah! I get it now...
You are concerned about leeching from the wire into the soil and thus into your veggies. I'd somehhow decided that you were worried the dog would chew the toxic barrier. My late-night fuzzy brain...

I found a thread on galvanized wire at organicgardening.com: http://forums.organicgardening.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2241078301/m/9441030207

It sounds like you'd be okay w/the chicken wire but, if you are still concerned, what about using floating row cover fabric? You could stretch it between posts and, if if gets too hot, you can use the extra as a shade barrier (or insect barrier). I bought mine from Gardens Alive last year (an all natural garden supply store) http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=2005 If you got one of the lighter weights, light could still get through while keeping your hungry girl away from your produce.
