West/Central Arkansas, Ouachita Mountains, here.
We have been trying to grow decent Raspberries since 2006,
and have been disappointed.
We pulled them all up this Spring,
and planted
Dorman Reds.
No ripe berries yet, but a few on the young vines.
I don't know whether it is possible to grow a decent Raspberry in The South.
ALL of the really good ones I have tasted have come from
up North,
with the wild Minnesota Raspberry being the best,
but we are going to keep trying.
OTOH:
Our Strawberries this year were FANTASTIC.
We grow two varieties;
an
Everbearing (Ozark Beauty),
and a
June Bearing, Sequoia.
We got a good crop from each,
and both were bursting with
Orgasmic Strawberry flavor.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=246x14285I can't even venture a guess as to WHY some local grown Strawberries would lack flavor.
Perhaps
overwatering (suggested above) could be a problem.
Our patch is on a hillside, well drained,
and we irrigate from a well,
so we are inclined to do the minimum.
The Strawberries are done now,
but the Blueberries, and wild Blackberries are just starting to come in.
We DO need some rain for the Blackberries.
OOPS!
Just re-read you post.
1st year Strawberries can be disappointing.
Ours didn't start getting
really good until the 3rd year.
We almost
gave up on Strawberries the 2nd year,
(way too much work, low production),
but the last two years have changed our minds.
Strawberries remain
Labor Intensive, but well worth the effort.
OTOH, Blueberries are nearly effortless.
